- Have you ever wondered how King Crimson guitarist Adrian Belew gets those awesome guitar sounds in songs like “Big Electric Cat,” “Elephant Talk,” and “The Lone Rhinoceros”? In this video, he explains to Synth and Software's Geary Yelton exactly how to coax those sounds from your own guitar rig.
Adrian Belew is the real deal and just a joy to be his fan! He is an artist first and has managed to create some of the coolest riffs ever!! I saw him Prague a couple years ago and he gave a long and great show to a few hundred fans just because he loves doing it!

Adrian Belew contributed an essential sense of chaos to King Crimson.
When Frank Zappa introduced his band and said the name Adrian Belew, I always got goosebumps.
Saw the two at the Fox in Atlanta back in....whenever Belew was in the Zappa band. Adrian had the whole Black and Decker kit with him.
The man is a true sonic explorer's. The first time l seen him live was with Bowie. Some people would call it a solo but what he does on Red Sails is more of some sort of psychotic explosion. One of the coolest things ever!
I pulled off my personal take on Elephant Talk by playing a dissonant bend on two strings with an old square wave distortion box from the 70s and pulling up on the wammy bar of my Strat. I thought I was a friggin' genius when I first did it!
Thank you Adrian indeed. We all love your work with KC and that includes your vocals as well as your guitar playing. And let's not forget your energy. I love how you bounce onto the stage with that big smile and light up the gig. And hey! Let's also not forget when you help Bill with percussion on tracks like Waiting Man. That's a KC iconic moment for me.

Extraordinary to watch live! Saw him with Stewart Copeland not so long ago. He seemed both suprised and amused by his own guitar sounds :-D
Adrian did some instructional videos in the 80's where he broke it all down in more detail. I remember seeing them, my room mate at the time bought them. not sure were he got them.

I was lucky enough to see King Crimson in 1980 at the greek theater (It might have been 1981) back then everything was analog he had his strat and Roland JC 120 (I stupidly sold my 70s era fender deluxe reverb to switch to a JC 120 because of watching this show) he had several fuzztones if I can remember and at least 2 flangers (probably ADA) one was mounted on a stand so that he could manipulate it. He was amazing!! singing and making weird noises at the same time. I was in the printing business then and we did work for JVC cutting center. I became friendly with the guy who was the one who "cut" Adrian's first album (ie he cut the tape to vinyl this was before CDs) and we both loved "Big Electric Cat" and each time I saw him we'd start singing it.

I love The Rail Song. I’ve never been sure wether he is doing train sounds on his guitar, or if it’s a real train in the song. Either way, it’s one of his most beautiful, poignant songs.
I saw him play Train Song with the Bears in mid-90s...was a highlite of the show, for sure.

When we are going to see Adrian playing with his analog sets again? To be honest I love his old gear. His old jazzchorus, those amazing Roland synths... we can't compare.
He sadly sold all his old analog stuff...

David Gilmour used a wah pedal to do it. You connect your guitar in the output jack of the pedal, and use the input jack to send the signal to the amp. I don't know the electronics and logic behind the trick, but it works.
I'm sure that Is achieved with a delay a slide and the use of the volumen.knob.

My biggest complaint of modern day Adrian Belew. He's just so hung up on using a computer for everything, and he's always pimping out some stupid guitar app or whatever. He's obsessed with all the gimmicks he used through out his heyday, when everyone that loves him as a guitar player does so for his playing. A lot of these "animal noises" were cool the first time you heard them, now they're just old tricks that can be thrown on at the switch of a button and sound so uninspired and soulless...a lot of the times he's playing with them it doesn't even sound musical anymore.

There was an old interview, in a college i believe, where he explains the segaull, the elephant, etc. with his original gear, but i can t find it now. One of his most used pedals was an Ehx Electric mistress
Yeah, he’s not one of those EVH/Adam Jones guys who likes trolling their fans - Belew actually loves talking shop... he’ll probably talk your ears off when it comes to talking about his old gear and his old tones...

I saw Adrian live back in the day multiple times (at gigs and a guitar clinic) when he was doing these sounds with analog gear, and I've seen him many times since. I get that this Fractal rig is much less stuff to carry around, and he can beat the crap out of that Parker and it will stay in tune. But the tone of this gear is thin and soulless by comparison to his original analog gear - watch literally any video of him with Crimson, Bowie or the Talking Heads and you will immediately hear how much beefier and colorful his tone is. I really hope he brings out the old gear (JC120, the analog Roland guitar synths) on his Jerry Harrison/Remain in Light tour gigs. The Fractal/Parker rig is just thin and awful sounding.
Yep, same here.
Digital itself us flat, cold, sterile, encoded numbers. With his analog gear it would breathe and do unpredictable things, with depth and dimension. That's what real/natural analog gear does.
Jim he can still make it sound better than 80% of guitar gods..He always plays with his tongue in cheek and you never feel let down by his live show. Still the Parker..I have one sitting in a case..whenever it comes out I think Ok this thing is beautiful, but it just never matches my LP strats or Tele's. Kind of a Jazzmaster, different and in some settings maybe useful but it stays in my rack. If I ever developed back problems..even then a strat feels the same on my shoulder..
I think most part of the problem is he is getting old, like everyone, one day, and he doesn't have a big crew to manage all his stuff. So, heavy and complicated gear isn't an option for him anymore... He's got simple and light gear, making everything easy and enjoyable... but sound excellence is not there no more, for sure...

If you as a beginner could play with the talking heads, david bowie, king crimson, and frank zappa then you might be the world's best guitarist

As a clarinetist, i felt this video was very informative, entertaining, but useless.
Great guitarist, but I hope he's quit clinging to those scraps on his head.
His one minute outro at the end of "The Great Curve" positively ruined what could have been Talking Heads best song.
And his guitar solo on Born Under Punches made it the best Talking Heads song of all time. Truly a complex man lol (I don't actually remember the outro youre speaking about so I'll have to listen back to it but also opinions arent real)
