Athagad (also spelt as Athgarh) is a town"(N.A.C)" and a sub-division of Cuttack district in the state of Odisha, India. During the British Raj, Athagad was the capital of the Athgarh State, one of the princely states of the Eastern States Agency. The Rajguru of Athgarh lived near Gada (rani mahal).
The lord Jagannath here is called Attali Jagannath. As a saying goes the lord was initially worshipped beneath a monastery called Attali and in the later phase, He was shifted to the present temple of 90-foot high made by King Jagannath Dev in 1798.
Jagannath is also termed as Patitapabana and solely worshiped here without the presence of Lord Balaram and Devi Subhadra. The idol of lord Jagannath here was replaced with a new one after about 120 years and the old idol was buried in the backyard of the temple termed as Koili Baikuntha.
