All the oscillators...

- Both DFAMs, both Mothers, Instruo Saich + TSL-v2. I've been trying to get something running with all 11 oscillators running at once for a while now. Next time I should remember to wear a clean hoodie ;)
Ok… one of the best things I’ve heard this year, great slow burner …., nice polished mix , great sounds. I’d pay money to see you live.
Thanks! Haha, well if you’re ever in Tasmania, I’ll let you know when I’m playing. ;)
Polished mix? The kick is barely audible bro. Lovely sounds though.
@@drconflict629 Get yourself a new pair of ears, bro!
Stumbled on your channel through a chance recommendation, and so glad for that! Will be eagerly anticipating every video!
Your sounds are definitely making me want to get my own modular rig... love it dude
It’s a slippery slope! (And it can be pricey)
If you do go down that route, heed my advice first! The most important thing is deciding how you want to sequence first.
If you are making tracks in ableton, just get a Moog sub37. If you want the mega sounding 4 oscillators, maybe a matriarch or the Behringer quad oscillator model D.
If you are making tracks in ableton, and still want to get into modular - the expert sleepers ES9 midi/usb audio interface is probably worth a look.
If you want to play around with dawless jamming, then expect it to get reasonably pricey pretty quickly! The Korg SQ-64 is about as cheap as I’d want to go in terms of sequencer. (I use the endorphines ground control + noise engineering quantus pax). I’ve never used the key step pro, but I have used the best step pro. Some people love them, but I’m not a massive fan of the ‘feel’.
If you don’t want to spend money on a decent sequencer, don’t both with modular! (Maybe try out vcv rack? It has all the instruo modules in there)
*If* you have a decent sequencer, then the Behringer edge and crave are no brainers (or the mother-32 and DFAM - probably skip the subharmonicon!).
If you already have a mixer with inbuilt FX, or send/returns, you’re probably good to go.
If not, you’ll probably want a mixer (eg, ST mix by Befaco), some sort of FX (ghost by endorphines is probably the best bang for the buck?), and some sort of headphone output (Erica synths pico out, Instruo Cuir, or Joranalogue Transmit; depending on your need).
Add to that the cost of a case and power supply for any additional modules (4ms pod 64x, or Behringer Go, or homemade. Don’t bother with Behringer 104hp racks).
One nice aspect of the Endorphines ground control is that it can power a row of modules - so even though it’s expensive - it does at least save some money on the power supply.
Now go add in the cost of patch cables (buy mainly longer ones - small cables are a false economy if your rig grows in size).
So if you’re willing to spend the money on a good sequencer and effects/mix/output chain, then buy those along with a crave and an edge. If any of those bits are missing, you won’t have a fun time with modular :(
Honestly though, all of the instruo modules are in VCV rack, so that’s probably a better (and much cheaper!) place to start :)
I think a lot of folks will see you making all that hard work and planning look like too much fun!
You are obviously very serious about this, but in your YT content, you’re leaving out the frustrations that come up while planning this, making it look a lot easier than it is. I think you’re damned talented because I know it’s NOT easy to learn about that stuff. Thanks for sharing, it rocks!
Thanks!
Honestly though, if I’m making this look easy, it’s not that I’m hiding anything, it’s more that I’ve purposely designed the rig to be as easy to play live as possible!
Arguably the hard work has already been done - which was firstly figuring out the backbone patch (for clocking, setting up the sequencer channels, kick/snare/hats, final mix down, and the FX chain), and secondly putting in enough practice to develop the muscle memory (rarely changing the layout helps a lot here!)
This rig is actually setup for quadraphonic gigs - and that setup trebles my workload over stereo. Due to rack space limitations, some of my more wayward modules had to come out. As a result, the synth voices I can make in this rig err towards the simpler end (which makes things a bit easier). I’m not going to lie, after 9 or so months of only playing quadraphonic, going back to stereo for UA-cam is actually pretty easy in comparison :)
Most of the jams I record tend to end up here in full (I usually need to patch at least one voice first, so I can check the levels before hitting record, so it may be missing about a minute from the start, but that’s about it).
Honestly, I don’t actually plan anything. I only ever record one take of anything, and that’s what ends up here. Very occasionally I may chop a bit out of a larger jam (such as this video), but that’s typically because I’m either practicing one technique over and over again, or because the result is so bad that I know it will elicit a load of dislikes :(
Most of my jam videos exist so that I can rewatch all my mistakes! If I’m playing at a festival or in a club, I’m usually sandwiches between 2 Dj’s. The only thing I want to know prior is what bpm the previous dj is ending at (so I can sync up and hopefully seamlessly transition into my set); and what bpm the DJ after me wants to start their set at (so as a courtesy to the other Dj’s, I might plan to start at 140bpm, and end at 160, but that’s about it!). Anytime I’ve gone into a gig with a plan, that plan has been thrown out the window with ten seconds of starting. I only ever do one take. If it goes well, awesome. If it doesn’t, I’ll watch the video a few times to figure out where I went wrong, and hopefully I won’t make those mistakes when I’m on stage :)
My main aims are to play in front of a live audience. My UA-cam channel is kinda a residual side effect of that aim tbh :)
@@robtheblokeI love seeing people's creative energies put to good use like this! Thank you
Love this. Excellent stuff. Echo another comment about seeing a different camera angle so we can see the flashing lights and such! Doesn’t detract from the excellent piece though.
Beautiful. I love your music way too much. I can’t stop listening to it XD. Hope you’re having a great day.
Мужик это реально круто. Вживую было бы ещё круче Я думаю
Как же это залипательно, можно брать и медитировать под эту музыку
I ve never eard a thing like this since years
very nice! love to see the setup better. The set is amazing!
Subs are rising, keep it up my man
Thanks! It’s been a little humbling to be honest.
Waking up to a load of positive comments first thing in the morning has been nothing short of heartwarming!
Many thanks to everyone who has viewed, liked, commented and all the rest of it! It is greatly appreciated!
Ok you've got 4 skiffs!!!
SO GOOD ! 🔈🔉🔊🔊🔊
To the fucking LIMIT!
Really beautiful work
You are a f****** genius 😮
Dope sound man!
I’ve found myself coming back to watch more and more of your videos. Can I ask some basic questions as someone who doesn’t really understand anything - sorry as they have probably been asked already.
So the basic set up here fuses modern midi sequencing hardware with new or original analogue synths/lfos etc?
Are all the sounds being produced by analogue equipment or do you also have a drum machine/bass station/other
I don’t see a keyboard or any sort of screen so how do you keep on top of all the voices and tracks over such long jams?
And the annoying but obvious question - why do it like this when you could do it all through a laptop?
Great work. Love the channel
Nah, I’m not using any midi here at all. It’s done the way you’d do it back in the 1960’s, it’s just control voltage (CV) using a 1 volt per octave scale for pitch, and gates/triggers to time when the note will play.
I use a digital delay and reverb, but everything else in the audio chain is fully analogue.
What you see in the rack is it. I have no other outboard gear. I don’t have a drum machine, but I do have a trigger sequencer (to play drums in time!). I have a 909 kick drum module, and my hi-hats/snares are from an 808. So I ‘kinda’ have a drum machine in the rig, but it’s basically built up from bits of ‘Lego’ to get the drum machine I want, if that makes sense?
I do have a keyboard in the rig (have a look for my video, ‘a quick sequencer overview’ to see how that works!)
So why don’t I use a laptop?
1. I’m a software engineer by trade, so I don’t want to touch computers in my spare time!
2. A mouse is not a very good performance tool! I prefer loads of knobs!
3. Digital audio has a limit to the frequencies (usually 20hz to 20khz). Analogue has no such limits. You may not be able to hear those frequencies, but you can feel them, and once you’ve Heard analogue direct into a speaker, you won’t go back!!!
@@robthebloke thanks. Wow. I have no idea how this works. There was a house in Islington, London full of vintage jukeboxes and I was being nosey when the owner came out and we got chatting. He invited me in and spent an hour or so playing me 7 inch vinyl records on all the old jukeboxes he owned through their ancient value amps and handmade speakers. They all sounded incredible. I still remember it so vividly. So when you say the sound is better I believe you based on that previous anecdote. Above all else it just looks so cool and impenetrable with all the wires and knobs.
Lovely ❤
This rocks
this is epic
Wow, is that rack handmade? Looks like Iron and wood. Super!!!
Nah, it’s a 4 tier moog rack, with a few 4ms pod cases at the front
patch adams
this is amazing.
Thanks! I just checked out your channel - you’re none to shabby yourself! Nice stuff!
@@robthebloke thank you!
Awesome man!
Love this
Did you make that rack yourself?
I saw you had a similar smaller one as well before this one.
I love the music, it is giving me Nathan Fake/James Holden/Extrawelt/Ricardo Tobar BORDER COMMUNITY vibes!
Nah, they’re just standard Moog 104hp skiffs in a 4 tier rack. The front row are just 4ms pod 64x’s. It’s definitely grown over the years ;)
I’ve been wanting a new case for a while tbh, something a bit more suitable for gigging! But you know, money! Haha
Lovely
nice dude
