    Cpt Perry, I started following you just after you laid the keel. What is cool is you actually built the scow almost exactly like you built the model. Awesome! First time watching this episode. Can’t wait till the next vid sir!

      Thank you! I re-drew the plans based on that cardboard model so I stuck to that design going forward.

    I hugely enjoyed your model building and think it looks fantastic, it also motivated me to make a model of a folding boat I have in mind.
    Your deleting the cockpit footwell makes excellent sense for the reasons you stated.
    Your thoroughness and meticulous nature is really going to make your build something very special indeed.

    Oval slightly won out over the boxy doghouse. Oval might be more streamline into the wind. Great video! Thanks so much.

    Just found your Channel, looking forward too following the build.
    If I may suggest, on the legs for the frame, fit in some additional pieces fixed to the underside, floor to frame attached to the legs.
    You are relying on just the screws at the moment, as weight goes on and you climb on and off, the screws will give to a degree.

    hey, it's a great looking boat, to my eyes anyway. It is the latest to be sure. I'm working on the sharpie 550. I built Bolger boats in my backyard, and they looked different in drastic ways, and at least with the sharpie 55 I'll have bow, mast , centerboard and rudder all on center.

    I know the center of effort for the sail can remain too high for stability when the dagger board is retracted for shallow water sailing and the initial stability will be quickly over come. This can be offset by striking the sails however the lateral resistance will also be compromised. Would the addition of chine runners help in this situation and would the addition be a detriment to the hull speed being limited by its size and ratio which such small craft suffers? Could gains in pointing be had when the board is raised by adding chine runners as in the Matt Leydon Paradox design?

    What a fantastic project! I subscribed. Did you work out the panel dimensions for the model on the computer, or did you purchase a yacht architect plan and modify it to fit your design? If you bought the 'inspiration plans,' from where, please? Cheers.

      Thanks for subscribing! The inspiration plans are from the Tenten425 which I purchased from Duckworks. I kept the important parts in the same place (mast, keel, etc), and then modified other features to fit what I wanted.

    I wonder why you didn't build a frame that has a bed at the top, like a shallow bathtub, that can be filled with a thin layer of polymer. Liquids are always naturally level!
    Accordingly, a thin layer of polymer enriched with fillers for cost reasons is absolutely flat as a cast surface; and in addition, holders can also be cast into the thin layer of polymers.
    But that is just my 2 cents ...
    Btw. If there is doubt because of the gap below the cast level surface, it can be just filled with sand or the like.

    I am not by any means a designer of boats, but I can't help but think that spoiler looking thing might just provide the possibility of the boat coming to a slightly stable upside down position, similar to what happened to the first Balachon, that almost trapped Yann Quenet inside. Might work as two legs of a tripod with the bow being the third leg. I also was thinking what it you were thrown onto a sand bar upside down, how do you escape.
    Also, what you said about not having a foot well so the water would drain immediately. You could still have a foot well, just don't fully enclose the rear of it so the water is trapped. I am not thinking you should have a foot well, but the water running off issue is not a reason to avoid it. One rrason I thought of having a foot well, is it would be the perfect spot for an escape hatch, one that would be almost perfect centered such that in any position in water, it would be above the water line. And it would also solve that crazy unlikely end up upside down on a sandbar scenerio I mentioned.
    I do however love what you have done so far. Eventually, I hope to have a somewhat similar boat. The Balachon 2 has a lot of what I think I want, but the keel would not allow it to beach. And I also thought best to keep it narrow, but you got me thinking that maybe the extra foot of beam maybe a good idea.
    Looking forward to seeing it on the water.

      Thanks. Recently I've been thinking of having a small escape hatch in the stern, just in case. The arch in the back is curved, so my hope is it makes the boat very unstable upside down and quickly causes her to right. Testing will prove that theory right or wrong in time.

      @@ocean_capable_small_sailboat Yes, having the flotation curved would make a differenced. I imagine, any solar panel shelf could still be flat as long as it does not provide flotation.

    I would avoid any flat surface if possible. Flat is weaker than curved and offers much more resistance to crashing waves almost defeating the gains had by the slope of the forward deck. In aircraft terms perhaps borrowed from nautical, wetted area is used to describe a direct impact of the air to the surface which is not curved or sloped. This would be, for example on the very apex of the airfoil whether it be a wing or rotor. This is terrible parasitic drag which requires much more power to make headway. In your case such an increase of this type of surface might stop your progress completely in a situation where waves even spindrift is reaching the deck. It may not help much but any gains on such a long voyage could result in many nautical miles gained as the journey progresses.
