Whenever I hear the mention of Winifred Attwell in print or radio I open UA-cam and play this song. Oozes talent and love the twinkling ivories. I’m a Sydney taxidriver but I feel like I’m with my ancestors back in Paris.
She's fabulous. I remember loving her music when I was a schoolgirl back in the 1950s, and I'm so glad to have found this clip, which I've played over and over gain.
you and me to, and there are many other clips, Wini was the best of the best. even russ conway admitted that and he was great also, rest in peace Wini. xxx
Man alive.. This gets me every time. It's fantastic. And she doesn't even need to look at the keys while she's playing. Pure genius. Wonderful stuff. And she sold over 20 million records. And she discovered Matt Monro, so it's a huge thumbs up for this Lady.
For the US Les Baxter Nr. 1version they took a whole orchestra and even used a fake ending but in the UK one astounding woman with her old piano from a junk market created a magic that is easy to enjoy but hard to describe. ❤
A wonderful memory from the 1950s. Classically trained, she could show classical pianists how to relax at the keyboard. She recorded Grieg's piano concerto alongside other works such as Chopin's Revolutionary Etude. A keyboard natural.
Daddy used to play the E.P. "Tickle the Ivories" which included this track. So many happy childhood memories come surging back.Thank you my friend for this is the first time I have seen footage of her genius natural talent. I just love the enthusiasm and deliverance of her performance. You have made me so happy, thanks for uploading.
My aunt used to imitate Winifred's Boogie Woogie style as we gathered around an old upright piano in the late 50's. We loved Winifred Atwell and I'm sure she is sadly missed by her millions of fans around the world.
Just AMAZING. My Dad played this to me when I was a little girl in the nineties and he would pretend to be playing it himself whenever anyone came round to tune my Mum's piano!!! I wish more people my age knew music like this.
Brilliant Footage of a wonderful lady Burried a few kilometers from me he in Gundurimba just outside of lismore , there is a beautiful monument there dedicated to a genius of the Ivorys . thank you
along with Mrs. Mills, Russ Conway & Joe 'Mr. Piano' Henderson (remember him?) these were the glory days of the early 60's when all sorts of musical styles hit the charts - you can bluff your way through singing a song but playing an instrument solo shows your talent, or lack of. They all made it look so easy, smiling all the time as if was like riding a bike
FANTASTIC. GLORIOUS!!! THANK YOU so much for uploading this treasure. Does everyone know that in addition to being an extraordinary musician/performer, Ms. Atwell helped other greats to get discovered/established? MATT MONRO (she even gave him his name!)
Very cheering. I love it when the upper register of a piano is so well used! Off on a tangent, one of those little known facts (that Cliffy on Cheers would have been proud to relate!): The English title for this piece is a mistranslation based on the homophones (in French), gens (people) and Jean (the name). The original song in French was Pauvre Jean de Paris (Poor John of Paris). I knew that would make all your days better.
Wonderful......& goes back to my Dad playing 78's in New X, London & my Aunty Fanchea playing Winifreds pieces in Co Dublin. Great memories....Madeleine O'Boyle
As a child, a small boy. We had two records , Let’s have a party, part 1 and 2 . They were played a lot. I occasionally saw on television but one year she visited Aberdeen , it might have been the Tivoli, but I think it was His majesty’s Theatre. Anyway, the family went to see her and I remember being by her presence and her performance. I’m now 71 and I’m re-experiencing the feelings listening to her . I’m now looking for her playing Bye Bye Blackbird.
Oh how love her playing. I still have all her old 78 rpm records with Winnie. Sorry I never got to see her playing, but this more than makes up for not having seen her live in concert
Thank you so much for posting this. i keep returning to it again and again. The arena organist used to play the song at hockey games here in Vancouver British Columbia when I was a teenager. It brings back such great memories, and I only recently discovered the name of the song. Just hearing it again after all these years is such a treat; I really can`t thank you enough.
This is still an utterly entrancing and rivetting video, especially for me as I am trying to learn this piece. It is so helpful to be able to see her right hand or at least the piano hammers in many places.
Memory Lane. Out of this world was her playing one of a kind Trinidad and Tobago lady pianist in the Radio Era. We listened to Arthur Geoffry Shows on the American base in Trinidad who occasionally played this guest Winifred Atwell in the '60s. What a treat my first battery operated radio. We moved up in the world as we listened to her performance. Published Poet, Geneva M. Neale (Audain) 23042013.
She stopped traffic in Edgecliff Rd.& Drew a crowd whilst trying out pianos in Reg Hutching's Sydney piano shop playing this very song! A truly divine soul!
One of the first tunes I heard as a child way back in the 1950s. Yes, on the 78 r.p.m. Abiding memories . We had the old Gramophone which had to be wound. Radio Ceylon featured Winifred Atwell on Piano Playtime. She was lovely to listen to.
Ah, yes, a trip down Memory Lane. I well remember seeing Winifred Atwell play her “other piano,” way back in time. I’ve always liked this tune, and also her ‘black and white rag.’ Very fond memories of yesteryear.
When I was a child I found An old 78 record with Winifred playing this on it and the sound of the music it produced was more like that of an old barrel organ , I had that old record for many, many years until unfortunately it got broken and although I’ve listened to it many times on modern machines nothing can match the depth of sound that came from that old record on a 1950s record player
my first lp in 1959
'around the world in 80 tunes'
loved her music a lifetime
Seriously one of the finest piano players...effortless and that smile is so endearing...
Whenever I hear the mention of Winifred Attwell in print or radio I open UA-cam and play this song.
Oozes talent and love the twinkling ivories.
I’m a Sydney taxidriver but I feel like I’m with my ancestors back in Paris.
Ok after 65 years this wonderful gifted lady gets some exposure II wish I knew of Winnie sooner . God bless you
She's fabulous. I remember loving her music when I was a schoolgirl back in the 1950s, and I'm so glad to have found this clip, which I've played over and over gain.

Yes - it (and she) is so _happy_ , isn't it!
Man alive.. This gets me every time. It's fantastic. And she doesn't even need to look at the keys while she's playing. Pure genius.
Wonderful stuff. And she sold over 20 million records.
And she discovered Matt Monro, so it's a huge thumbs up for this Lady.
Pure genius is bang on. I grew up listening to Winifred Atwell. She was something special !

something about this lady just moves me inside , she was a true untainted expression of divinity .
I really can watch this over and over again. It's brilliant.
EXCELLENT!! She had such a winsome smile to go along with her superb talent! Thanks for uploading this great tune! MUCH appreciated!! Bonnie
In these days of uncertainty you can be sure Winnie brings a smile to your face with her honky tonk tinkling.
What a fabulous player. Love her cheeky smile too. Bless her x
She's incredible. Like no other
She was a joy...I love her feel, and she looks like she was a sweet lady..she proves that emotion is the king, and that's the point...
I remember her well and also Mrs Mills and Russ Conway. All were fantastic we would sit around the radio and listen, couldn't afford a TV.
Agreed.😊
how wonderful to see this rare clip, both picture and sound are so good.
thank you for posting this for us all to enjoy.
A great Artist!
You can see in any video recording of Winifred the sheer joy in her smile & twinkle in her eye when she's at that old upright.
RIP my fellow Trinidadian ❤️🇹🇹❤️🇹🇹
Someone needs to make a documentary on BBC4 so this lady is appreciated and remembered more
For the US Les Baxter Nr. 1version they took a whole orchestra and even used a fake ending but in the UK one astounding woman with her old piano from a junk market created a magic that is easy to enjoy but hard to describe. ❤
This is an absolutely fabulous clip! I just can't stop watching it! Thanks again.

Always brings a smile watching and listening to her play .

Winifred Atwell ia a genius on her piano. I could listen to her all day. God Bless you Winnie.
Was just thinking exactly the same. She's highly addictive to watch. 😂🤣
Without her, Fritz-Schulz Reichel possibly never became "Crazy Otto"
💐🙏😊 how she played left hand fluently accompaniment.. superb skill, bravo Pratice.. teqnic 🙏💐
Like always!
Just AMAZING. My Dad played this to me when I was a little girl in the nineties and he would pretend to be playing it himself whenever anyone came round to tune my Mum's piano!!!
I wish more people my age knew music like this.
Damn I love that tune
"This year's work's holiday, was two weeks away in Greece, It was all arranged by Terry, who gets flights cheap..."
Brilliant Footage of a wonderful lady Burried a few kilometers from me he in Gundurimba just outside of lismore , there is a beautiful monument there dedicated to a genius of the Ivorys .

Reminds me of my childhood her playing this one. RIP Winnie.x

One of the best. Thanks Winnie for all the great music. Here's hoping you're still pounding the keys as you continue your journey. Bless you!!

This is getting on for 70 years ago. Marvellous memories of Winifred Atwell

I to have a 78 RPM of this recording and a turntable that still plays all my Parents and grandparents records. She sure was one of kind.
What a treat this is! She was one of a kind.
So great hearing the old time "stride" piano playing...we lost this style back in the 1980s. Hardly anybody plays this style today.
I just love this piece. Play it when I’m feeling down and bring s a smile to my face. How does she play like that! Honky tonk rules 👍
I just love ,have done all life ,now I'm 70 I live in Tasmania, still love music 🎶 🎵 ❤ 💕
The music that I grew up with is so good to hear once again! It's music that brings a smile to the inner person.
Absolutely wonderful "live" footage. Thank you for sharing.
This is still an utterly entrancing and rivetting video, especially for me as I am trying to learn this piece. It is so helpful to be able to see her right hand or at least the piano hammers in many places.
After 4 months can I now play this. I love this song.
Great lady !
That smile, oh my God that smile

She was brilliant and an inspiration!
