  • Bushwalking around the granite Slip Rock.
    - - Winter 2024 #7 : Pyramids road - Rock gully - Rocky high point - Summit area - Western slabs - Boulder area - Western high point - Lower slabs - Striking outcrop - Pyra 2 - return via eastern slopes.
Distance : Perhaps 8 km. 300m height gain.
Walking conditions : Paddocks, dry enclosed scrub, open slab walking, and a little climbing.
Notes : This walk combines the knowledge acquired on two previous route finding trips. There are easier and harder ways to get about on this superb granite mountain. There are also many cairned routes, some a little misleading, so knowledge of the lay of the land is helpful. The bush here can vary in thickness from mild to impassable, and especially in descent we can be drawn into unpleasant brush choked areas, where retreating back uphill is a viable option.
At Pyra 2 (calling it that - prevents googling), I couldn't get up. My fitness was mediocre and it was the end of the day, so I was probably fatigued. Looking back on the images, I see that at the end of the highest slot some rocks and a branch have been placed to help step up there. I actually couldn't get any further along the slot without getting jammed, but that is probably the way up. I have climbed onto the Pyra once before, but all I can remember is that chimneying back down is fairly easy, but the tapered gap at the top is quite wide.
