Love the name. Its very fitting for heritage. You are doing with this boat what all of us with "good ole boats" wish we could do. Your video series is a great "how to restore" a good old boat with good bones. I hope, at some point, you will share a rough cost breakdown of the project. I hope you will also continue the video series as you sail and cruise her in the future.
This vessel is turning into a true dream boat. I am most impressed by the through holes and the treatment of the keel. As I look at the boat on the hard and have researched other photos and drawing of the Cal 40, I can see why they were so popular. Cal's original construction shortcomings, which are more than a few on the boat, have been so elegantly overcome as to make this truly better than the original makers could have imagined. I can't wait to see your video of the boat in the water.
I have had the pleasure of watching all the releases thru this one. WOW what a rebuild, refit. Your years of experience and vision for racing has created a gorgeous vessel. Well done you. I'm subscribed so I'll be waiting for the launch and practice sailing videos. Thanks for publishing!
I did a very similar re-fit on my Ericson 39, a boat from the same era. I also used Buzz for new spars and rig. It's really good of you to post these videos, and is particularly fun for Bay Area sailors who are familiar with these yards. Although we went through all of the systems the way you're doing it, we didn't have quite the same budget. Nevertheless, she got us around the world. Good luck in the race; I'll be watching for sure.
i cant imagine how that rudder can be legal in one design class racing. what a wonderful job of restoring this boat. money sure talks loud., good luck in the trans pac. fred is such a class act.
Fred, Great video series! I've enjoyed following along. Obviously, a more extensive project than originally anticipated, but the life you're breathing back into this boat is really astonishing. If you need any rail-meat for the transpac, I'm volunteering.
Always a dream to do exactly what you are doing now. Health precludes it, but I am enjoying it through you. I bought a lot of Schaefer hardware through the years, both as a boat owner and a boatyard owner and your pieces could always be counted on. I can't say that about every manufacturer. Good luck with the Transpac.
Thanks for the catch up. Amazing to have the chance to totally re-imagine a Cal 40, and the resources to follow through. Wonderful looking vessel, congratulations. I think she's gonna go like a scalded cat.
Another big thing about the original cal 40 rudder was it's notable weather helm, for those wondering that means you are sitting on the high side of the cockpit steering and having to hold a constant pressure on the tiller pulling it toward you to keep course some of the sheer strongest men I've met in my 60 years were back in the day cal 40 owners lol
Looking good! I hope to be able to follow you during the Transpac. Also, I wish I had you and your crew to help me with my finishing touches! At least I have a Schaefer furler.
I realize options are limited, but won’t having a water tank in the bow impact the balance and contribute to hobby horsing. My understanding was that you want to do everything possible to get weight out of the ends or, if unavailable, get the weight as far back as possible to lift the bow to make surfing easier, especially for downhill races in CA.
Thank you for the reply. I have been trying to find a good way to deal with this. I am restoring an Allied Princess and hope to do as good a job as you have. Fair Winds, James K.
Surprised that you forgot to add a tiller extension wand. Gives the helmsman much more flexibility and can also open space for other crew in the cockpit.
If your knotmeter transducer is fixed vertically on the keel, won't it measure different speeds depending on your tack? The reason I'm asking is mine is just on the hull, but just ahead of the leading edge of the keel and I do notice a 1.5kt difference between a port and a starboard tack (when heeling 20º or more). I'm curious to know your thoughts about that.
Great rebuilt! at some point around video 23 there is no more video 'no.' and so It is impossible to follow the later videos. Unfortunate. Beautiful rebuilt. Is the boat still class legal to class with all the mods?
What precautions have been taken to prevent the mob pole line from accidentally deploying and engaging the propeller? Thanks. P.S. Beautiful job. I have enjoyed watching and learning from your project.
absolutely love your work - we are on the other side of the planet - Oz - I noticed your prop hasn't been prepared for antifouling in any sense - have you heard of the product Propspeed? (propspeed.com/) we find it brilliant for keeping all manner of props tidy between slipping phases -

Love the idea about the cockpit drain. It makes me want to change mine immediately!

Congratulations on everything you've accomplished to date! It has been a real pleasure to watch you rescue this boat from the very beginning.

I haven't check in on this restoration project in about 10 months, and wow! It looks better than I could have imagined. Fantastic work guys.

Fred, Simply beautiful. Thanks for taking me on your journey with you.
Love the perfectly clocked fasteners on the Stem Head fitting. Awesome attention to detail!
Congratulations. A very nice looking boat and obviously very fast.

Well thought out. Love the engine box/stairs. Ingenious!
Love it!!! I'll be looking forward to seeing her in Berkley. Great job! Thanks for sharing! Eric
What a Fantastic project. Cheers from The Netherlands

Hot box, cute. I thought you were talking about going back to the 60's when the cabin would be closed and filled with happy smoke. hehehe

An engine that you can access?!?! Now i've officially seen it all. Very nice work
What a great project! Let me know if you need any extra weight on the rail!

I ate to ask but how much do you have into the free boat?
Nice job on the motor box

Fred , locally our electricians call your hot boxes
‘ pony panels’
you should raise the tiller so you can rest your arm on it when your cruising you will get a dead arm holding it up all the time

The bow lights do not look legal to me. How can anyone see the lights from straight on?
What is the actual brand and part number/name of the Hot Boxes?
Blue Sea ATC/ATO fuse panel/box
beautiful

James K Floating line?
typically we bundle up the excess line - tie it together with a rubber band and stuff it down the Dan Bouy hole - we haven't lost one in 20+ yearrs
Awesome !
Beautiful job, but did you say aerodynamic?
She's lookin good!
That new rudder is hydrodynamic NOT aerodynamic!

Lookin good.......dont know that word ......"disconcerning."
He meant to say disconcerting, meaning disturbing on uncomfortable.
