THIS MAY BOTHER YOU IF YOU ARE SENSITIVE TO SCREEN FLASHING.
The Sega Scope 3D was a technology that used shutter based glasses to convey a sense of 3D space. Not many games were released for it, but I take a look at them here.

    Episode Notes:
    1. I used a combination of real hardware, emulation and FPGA to capture this episode. I used the emulator Kega Fusion to capture the Missile Defense 3D segment at a super high framerate so I could slow it down to show you how each eye would see different things.
    2. As far as I know, the 3D Glasses do work on a power base converter since it has the card slot.
    3. This has been known to give some people headaches and motion sickness, but I had no trouble with it at all.
    4. These glasses and the transmitter box retailed for $49 in the US and 39 Pounds in the UK.
    5. Fragile doesn't begin to describe how the hinges on the glasses were. If you buy a pair that is still together, you'll need to baby the hell out of them.
    6. I dropped a Back to the Future reference in there for the heck of it.
    7. Sega's entire Super Scaler lineup needs to be on VR.
    8. You will notice the screen shifting right and left during the gameplay segments. This is a side effect of the way I took every other frame and broke it down so you would only see one eye at a time.
    9. This project has been on my PC in various forms since 2017. It has undergone numerous edits, display settings, and voice overs.

As a student, I recall working part time to save up for the Sega Master System I so desperately wanted... and by the time I had enough, the price had dropped and I picked up the 3D version with gun and glasses for about the same price! I was stoked!
Missile Defense 3D was totally fun, and I feel Space Harrier 3D is almost always underrated - great graphics, all the fun factor and gameplay BUT totally original enemies/stages/graphics. Truely an overlooked gem. 👍🎮

My Sega Master System was the 3D kit - it was amazing for its time. I still have the interface card but my glasses are shot. Somebody should try to make an emulator for VR headsets to recreate this given the hardware is difficult to find.

It's worth mentioning that the 3D Master System versions of Outrun and Space Harrier were also included in the Japan-only "Sega 3D Fukkoku Archives" for 3DS, which was their first compilation of "3D Classics" ports. They play pretty well, too!

Surprised there was never an After Burner 3D, that would have been ideal. Also a nice platformer or puzzle game too.
But will say be careful of the 3D Glasses, the arms can be incredibly brittle, to the point its almost pure luck to buy a pair with the hinges still intact. Also if you don't have a small head, it might be worth getting a broken pair for that reason. mine are held onto my head with a rubber band.

    • @MosoKaiser
      @MosoKaiser 3 роки тому +2

Well, the regular SMS version of After Burner was pretty choppy and a far cry from the ultra smooth and fast arcade original, making a 3D glasses compatible version would only have made it even worse.

You can play After Burner II in 3d on "Sega 3D Fukkoku Ākaibusu 3 FINAL STAGE" on the 3ds. That's the 3rd and final game in the "Sega 3D Classics Collection". For some reason, only the second game was released outside Japan. All three of the compilations are just phenomenal and extremely underrated in my opinion. It does contains some of the Master System 3d games, but most of the classics are reworked from the arcade versions (including ABII), so they're much more impressive with smooth frame rates and better graphics. They also remade a bunch of Genesis games along with lesser known arcade games. If you're a Sega fan, it's worth buying a 3ds if only to play these. Especially the super scaler games, which honestly feel like they could only reach their full potential in 3d. It's that good!

In 1988, made a pact of good grades with my dad and got a huge birthday gift: the Master System along with another gamepad, the Light Phaser gun and the 3D Glasses.unfortunatelly, my dad "forgot" to buy any game and I got stuck with Hang On, Safari Hunt (was that the name???) and (the secret) Maze "Anything" for months until a rent shop save my life!! Some friends of mine and a cousin had Nintendo clones back in the day, so we could play games from both sides, but gosh, i love those Sega gems, even they were so few and rare. Late got the wireless controllers and even Alex Kidd im Shinobi World and Phantasy Star. In 93, finally move over to Genesis (with Sonic 2, SF2, MK2 six-button controllers, Activator...) and latter to Saturn, my last Sega and overall console for years at that time... Until i come back at the Xbox 360 era. Man, what good memories! P.S.: I'm from Brazil, where TecToy made a good job representing Sega at Master System lifetime.

I was at a computer show in London (I think it was the personal computer world show 1987 at Earls Court but could be wrong, twas a lifetime ago) when they released these in the UK. Sega had a booth with a chair, biggish CRT and that 3d missile defense game and light-gun set up. I was very impressed with the 3d effect and the light-gun was pretty accurate. Ended up buying an SMS and the light-gun but couldn't afford the 3d glasses or the pack with everything included. Microprose (remember them?) had a full on hydraulic flight simulator pod set up in their booth and I briefly chatted to Alan Sugar on the Amstrad stand.

The glasses was an amazing piece of kit. For the time it provided an impressive 3D effect using a simple technique. I believe games that used the glasses used the NTSC timing signal (in North America) to synchronize its shutter with each refresh of the image. It was playable for the first half hour but it did get uncomfortable.
One thing I noticed is that in the games shown, you can hear FM sound playback. I believe the north american version of the Master System never had that support added.

Modern 3D displays can also use the shutter technology. Some use polarized lenses, others use the shutter technology. The PS3 Sony 3D monitor used the shutter tech. Using the shutter tech, it is possible for two people to be looking at the same screen and see two totally different images. Two people can be watching playing the same racing game, full screen, each seeing their own view of their car a position in the race. They just rapidly alternate the image for player 1 and player 2, and the shutter glasses are perfectly synced for each image. Pretty cool!

Many games could be happening right now as we speak for the Playstation VR,like all those modern rail shooters close to ocean hunter, house of the dead, jurasic park etc.Accompanied also with those sega 3D games.Instead we only take it to see the virtual room on the genesis collection rather something spectacular happening with the VR technology! Yeah yeah i know we have RE7 and skyrim yes it is a fat fact, but imagine how many other classic games like those i mentioned above could be remastered in HD to have them in a super bundle for VR games.Back in the day a VR system close to that one would be exploited to the fullest like we see in this video with that cheap technique that was those older 3D style blurry graphics. But nowadays not that much, sega was from the companies that literally juiced out to the mast drop a system with all those add ons they worked up as we witnessed over the years!

Sega Lord X, I have had almost all of these games since the late 1980s and I was very fond of playing Poseidon Warrs 3D. In addition to the good 3D effect and the epic soundtrack, the game provides freedom of movement on the screen and the lack of fuel and proportional sonar, a very interesting degree of strategy. For me the most amazing of all is Space Harrier 3D.

Another fantastic video! The Sega Scope 3D Master System bundle was MY introduction to the Sega Master System and boy did it leave a lasting impression. I LOVED Missle Defence 3D, Maze Hunter 3D, and Space Harrier 3D. Sega was way ahead of the time with this tech. To this day I often thought it was a wasted opportunity to not have more of these games ported over on the 3DS. To that end, I think another missed opportunity is from Nintendo themselves for not porting over their Virtual Boy games to the 3DS. Thanks for the memories. Truly a magical time where games were made to be fun and were not concerned about making political statements.

I proudly own a boxed set of 3-D Glasses and the complete library of games. I remember my best mate getting these back when they were released for Christmas.. he found them and we had a sneaky play before Christmas Day!
Pretty much agree with all the points made by SLX in his review. I never understood why Line of Fire had the 3D option hidden (just a mention in the manual). It’s not like there were loads of games so surely if they went to the effort of implementing a 3D mode it should have been marketed as a 3D game.. at least stating it has a 3D mode on the box?!
The glasses probably also work with the MasterSystem converter as it has the card slot.. not tested this though.
    Great episode :-)

The 15 fps is a tough sell these days but I can't say it bothers me personally. There is always that halving aspect when you can only render one screen, not much credit ever goes to Virtual Boy but it did have dedicated horsepower per eye.
Worth mentioning if you can only find the SMS adapter, ASUS and others made some compatible shutter glasses, that's the route I'm taking for my enormous head lol. Also recommend "jim_64's 8-Bit Projects" who made VR64 goggles for the C64.
Like most past fads we can do that effect much better now as those 3DS arcade ports showed, especially in frame rate.

From the look of the Japanese master system, the card adaptor isn't needed because it has a preassigned jack for the glasses which is convenient to say the least.

Tip for people trying to get into the Sega Scope 3D today. Assuming you have the TV for it...there is still a big problem in that people are trying to sell Sega Glasses for an arm an a leg. Also, many tend to be broken (fragile hinges) and were designed to smaller heads.
What you really need is just the module that plugs into the card slot and people sell those for a much more reasonable price. Then you can buy a "modern" pair of LCD shutter glasses because they all pretty much use the same technology and as long as it has a 3.5 stereo plug it probably should work. These are usually much cheaper than genuine Sega glasses.
Currently the Asus VR-100G seems to be the easiest to buy at roughly $20. You can also get the Nintendo 3D glasses from Japan (yup, Nintendo also has this!) which are not as cheap, but probably cheaper and easier to get than Sega Glasses as least (and looks to be less fragile since it uses straps).

Interestingly, the Zaxxon 3D version looks exactly like the ports of Zaxxon to the Atari 2600 and the Intellivision (without the 3 D of course), as those systems weren't strong enough to display the arcade game's isometric view. Not sure if this was just coincidence, or some of the people a Sega recalled that.

I still have my working 3D glasses and a pair of good Light Phasers (you have to have 2 to do co-op Gangster Town!), and many of these games. I was quietly hoping that there were more than I knew about out there, but I suppose not. Still, I very much agree about Maze Hunter 3D being the showpiece, though I definitely like Zaxxon 3D more than you did. I like Space Harrier as well, but part of that may be bias toward the series. Missile Defense 3D is a good time, and while not as fun as other gun games on the SMS like Gangster Town, Rescue Mission, and Rambo III, it's still a must for anyone who has the glasses.
Also, if anyone is curious, the Sega Scope 3D glasses do work with a power base converter on a Sega Genesis. That's how I've always played, since my Master System is a Master System II.
