I'm an in-box collector myself, but I totally get why some collectors unbox. I'm passed the stage of feeling the need to unbox and "play" with my figs. It loses something, once they're open. I'm not going to lie though, I have customized a few, but I immediately, return them to the packaging. (My customizing consists of switching packaging, or switching body parts). 97% of my collection has never been altered, or opened!

Great video, Im watching it now! For me it all depends on what it is, and what I want to do with my collection. Most of my collection is in the box, but there are some things that I want to display out of box. To each there own.....there is NO right way or wrong way to do it. It is all personal preference, and it is your OWN collection, and I feel each person can display it how they want, and also should NOT be telling others how they should do their collection, especially when its not theirs to begin with. LPH has a very valid point........displaying the box lets you appreciate the hard work the artist took to make his work stand out and be appreciated, and when it is ripped open and thrown away, the art is immediately forgotten about. Its an underappreciated line of work, and the artists deserved more credit.

Toy collecting for me is an attempt at recapturing a childhood feeling and a major part of that is the physical holding of the toy, but I do both. Some toys the box compliments the figure perfectly where I prefer how it looks in the package. Some are so valuable in package I can’t justify opening, and I’d prefer just tracking down a loose example. I never got into collecting as an investment, though I do have some valuable pieces. I don’t view my collection as an investment, and I started basically trying to reaquire all my childhood ninja turtles that I’ve lost over the years. I didn’t need the packages to get that “feeling” and loose figures are so much cheaper. I don’t knock anyone for what they do, and do not care either way. However when I was a kid in the 90s I had a friend across the street who had EVERY single power of the force II figure, and walking into his room was like a toy store, but his dad wouldn’t let him open any of the figures, because he saw them as an investment, and that blew my mind as a kid and I just could not understand it, and that kind of stuck with me to this day, I felt like my friend was missing out on something and that people who never open anything for the sole fear of loss of value are just different than I. Different strokes I suppose. Bless.

I must be a very unique collector. I display the toys AND their boxes. I take everything out of the package. That's the whole point. That was the original intent. I'm not in it for the money (like Toy Hunter... right, David?). I'm in it for the love of the toys. That's why I've spent decades going to stores, toy shows, flea markets, yard sales, ordering from catalogs, and spending hours on Ebay.
Recently I've gotten into buying empty boxes for toys that I've owned for 40 years, because I love the artwork on them, and they bring back happy memories.
Every collector has his/her own way of collecting and displaying. Mine is to enjoy the item, as well as the box it came in. Since Return of the Jedi (1983), I have saved the packaging of every toy I have bought. I may never find all of the boxes for Mego's World's Greatest Super Heroes, but it sure is fun looking. I managed to get the cards to nearly all of the small Kenner Star Wars figures (except for Boba Fett). Now I'm working on the large ones. It's much harder.

I take most of my collectables out of the Box, granted most of them are dolls, simply because the hair and outfits tend to be wrapped in paper or plastic it's hard to display it in full glory.
I do keep certain ones in boxes IF the Box art is amazing like some Monster High dolls. Sideshow I keep the boxes to store the accessories in but display the fig in a case.

I appreciate both. I'd say roughly 60% of my collection is loose, 40% mint in box. Coming up with cool poses and displays is really enjoyable, plus unboxed figs take up less space.
But I also love the artwork, and some figs actually look better in package.
Either way, I *carefully* unbox when I do, and I keep all packaging. So I can repackage any time I want. (Except for carded blister packaging)
For the recent and affordable MOTU lines, I've been buying a lot of doubles. One to take out and pose, one to stay mint.

Hey great subject..I collect 1/6 figures .. I’m not a huge fan of glass cabinet displaying however I do take my figures out of the box . I may display the figure with the box behind the figure on a shelf and I also build dioramas for certain figures. I have a few displayed in the box because of the art and figure placement but only a very few. I prefer being able to change poses depending on my mood or esthetics therefore I don’t collect statues but do appreciate them visually. I would say if you like keeping them in the box more power to you but displaying out has its merits

(Added comment) >>> When I was a kid, I put together a snap-tite model of Space Shuttle Challenger, and I really loved that model and the thrilling experience I had when I put it together. Its lost to time now.....and I just recently purchased a vintage model kit of the same kind. I want to put it together when I get it, and re-live that same experience I had as a child and display it. At the same time, I would like to keep it in the sealed box unopened and just display it that way. But between that, and wanting to assemble it, I am torn between the two. Ultimately what I think I will do is both.......buy an already opened but COMPLETE box and use that for assembly, and then buy a sealed box and display that too. I guess this is one hobby where sometimes.....you can have your cake and eat it too. This is one of the rare times when I will have both.....and opened item, and an unopened item.

I appreciate the video post on the two sides of the coin of loose and mint figures. For me personally, I don't care what others do in their collection. I open packaged items myself for the pleasure of enjoying it’s features, articulation, and sculpt , so loose figures are my preference.
But when I do, I open items in boxes or even on card, and keep them. I think I have more boxes of empty toy boxes and cards than I do toys... since I display them.
With regards to comic books. I used to collect and appreciate them. But since graded books are a thing, I got turned off, big time! It seemed more like a profit market than something to enjoy and appreciate. Just like toys I guess.
But my hope is that collectors; whether or not they keep their collection mint or loose; that they collect for the nostalgia, appreciation and temporary joy of it; rather than the hope of it increasing in monetary value. Unless you own a toy store, then it would be most beneficial. LOL.
I'm even surprised that these plastic artwork appreciate more in value than diamonds. Supply and demand I guess... But, in my humble opinion, it's s really about the ART, in this case - PLASTIC ART. Mint or Loose. If it goes up in price great, and good for those who want to sell it for profit. If it doesn't, also great; enjoy it's aesthetics and nostalgia that you have it.
Take care you guys, stay safe and God bless.

I collect military armor miniatures and 1/6 scale mostly Dragon WW2 figures and I prefer out of the box for them all. I have a few in-box at the moment only because I haven't gotten around to getting them out and putting them on display. I like to view them with their equipment and not all sitting in plastic. I love both modes of collecting for different reasons. Out of the box is fun because you can pose figures, play with them, and be a kid again. In the box seems to be more nostalgic for me -- takes me back to when I was a kid gawking over toys in the store. To satisfy both urges, I developed sort of a system: I tend to open my smaller figures (6-8 inches), and keep my bigger guys in the packaging. I've noticed that companies get really intense with the box art for figures that are 10 inches and above. Great topic!

I really enjoy the casual and relaxed style of your videos. I must confess that I actively seek out open boxes/loose action figures to display, but I also have a hard time unboxing something that is mint, because in my mind I'm always hoping that the figure will go up in value and that I can flip it for a few extra bucks if needed. I stopped collecting comic books for the same reason, always speculating but never actually reading the books. I'm slowly breaking myself out of the habit, but as a compromise I typically buy one to open and display and one to stash away. 🤣🤣🤣 great topic, I hope that you make a follow up soon

There is virtually a new industry that has come into being for collectors who want to re-box their collectibles. Facsimile boxes are available now, especially for larger items like Star Wars vehicles or large figures like the Kenner 18" 1979 ALIEN. I'm sure other types will spring up soon. For me, I like my figures to remain boxed, mainly because most come with a view and are preserved better that way.

If people do not like how Open by Chance displays their stuff, then shut up and start your own channel. Another thing that bothers me is when people rag on you because you do not purchase all of the items in a series. For example, I collect the Artist Alley Batman statues. But there are some that I don't like (like the Batman patched together like Frankenstein with other figures). It's just plain ugly and I don't want it in my collectible room. I keep some of my stuff in the box like the Power Rangers Lightning Collection, some Pop figures, and a few other things but a lot of stuff I have opened and displayed.

I’m mostly in the box, Mostly for space if I did take it out of box I’ll save the box but now I have to find space for both items. Also in box easy to display and dust. What about a toy that has batteries and the box is sealed. I’m worried that the batteries will corrode and ruin the toy. Should I take them out or leave them in. I don’t collect for value but don’t want to break the seal. Thanks

Its a conundrum and I think I would carefully open it and remove the batteries. Leaving them in would definitely damage my product, and just might leak onto the box itself, and become visible from the outside. But I see your point too.....you want it to stay sealed.

Johnny Future Thanks for the feedback. I have 6 boxes of Art Asylum Refit Enterprise and wanted to remove the batteries. They packed that thing with twist ties, they glued it . I ruined the box and decided not to remove the batteries from the other boxes. They have the batteries that are used for watches do you think they will leak like AAA batteries .
