How to Convert a Window into a Sliding Glass Door

- In this video I'm going to show you how we converted a window into a sliding glass door. We installed a MP door from HomeDepot. In this video we remove a window and replace with sliding glass door.

What did you do about the dryer vent directly under the door? Surely you didn’t just leave the vent open under the steps
That exactly what I did. I put a cover on it and exhaust under the steps. The step are open, so no issue.
I was gonna relocate but didn’t make sense.
I wish you would have shown how you attached the steps and finished the siding around them
sooo i did record it but completely forgot to edit and post - this reminded me ! lol guess i should find that footage !

Curious why a door header was used? Does a outside wall not need a door header? Curious how much window/door foam insulation was used. Would’ve like to see upclose you doing that. This helps me a lot - I’ll be replace a window to door soon.
The header was already there because there was a window there already.
Love the video. Very informative, only thing I have to add is that the music at the beginning is way too loud. I turned my volume up to hear you, and then BAM! The music comes on and frightened my entire family.

How long did this cutout and install take? How many persons were needed to complete the job? Thank you for posting this vid. Great content 😊
With a good plan this took one day to get in weather tight. Another day to finish up siding …. I needed three guys to pick the door up because it was heavy.

in my case it's kinda both... if subfloor is at correct height then no issues...

What if the installers skip the sill flashing tape and just lay the door down on wood with silicone between the wood and the bottom of the door
Not ideal but prob okay. That’s the way it was doing for decades. If it gets a lot of rain on it I’d maybe consider adding tape to bottom to cover whatever wood you can see. Tough to answer without seeing it.
How much do you think it would cost me to do this myself? (Minus my ER bills) I’m kidding, I’m doing a kitchen reno now. My wife wants to convert our windows to a sliding door. We are in the middle of a pool install out back
I want to do same thing to an old house built 1949 this house has old wooden frame glass windows double pane with storm screens..any advice for me I am building incline but Considering the age of my house what would be your best advice..? My window is 82in high to the floor and 68 width in stud to stud..what size of window would i need..?? Thank you in advance for you advice and help. I can provide u with pics of the old window.
You want to put a door in right ? Your height seems fine but the width, just go smaller than 68. Consider rough opening size when buying a door. Not the finished size.
@@FamilyDIYtv Yes I am putting a door in. I order a sliding door sized 70W x 80H, my house has old asbestos siding on the outside, this will be tricky to mold it on the outside frame, whats your advise for external sealing the flush, and what external kind all weather trim should i use??

Good info. however the music and your speaking volume differs too much (first few minutes). I have to lower my volume and then re-raise it when you talk again. Later on it gets better though

Handy man want to charge about$ 700 to do the same thing. Converting window into sliding door. Is this feasible for me to do? I'm handy too. Just rerouted my hot water slab leak with pex b . Handyman wanted $2k for it. I used $ 150 in sharkbite and tubing and 2 days of work
I could say with a god plan you can do anything. I'd say yes you can do it !!! get a few friends and family to help and don't underestimate this. one of the most important thing it to make sure you can get it weather tight within the first day, so don't worry about the internal finishing the first day ... just get it weather tight day 1.

You could do cheaper buy getting a less expensive door from HD or lowes …. Can also spend $3000 alone just on a door. So its tough to estimate in general.

A broken weld in the corner is not going to pass inspection
You should had taken the slider out before installing it. No doubt there is a Crack in the corner.
This is a lot of money, I wish they would just put bigger windows/doors on homes in the first place.

The flashing tape you used is not compatible with silicone meaning it won’t stick to it when it cures. You need a polyurethane sealant when using that product like Tremco, Sika, or Permathane

Just heads up - installing door today and called Protecto wrap and asked, That’s not true, its compatible with silicone.

I’m about to purchase an American Craftsman slider from HD but I like the trim on yours better. Appreciate your time and input!
I used a masterpiece door with build in blinds. The only thing I’d do differently is trim the outside with white composite trim, instead of running the siding up to the door. Think it would have looked better, might still do it.
Both my masterpiece doors came damaged which I had to fix during installation, was a pain ! Also couldn’t get the delivered to my house, had to pick them up. Which was also a pain. The delivery charge is well worth it, especially if it come damaged because you can have them take back ! Lol.
I’m putting one more in and I have to get the same door so it matches. I’m not looking forward to picking it up again.

My contractor charges $1k for installation. I'm pretty handy myself. Should I do it myself? I fix my own car. Do my own timing belt on honda Odyssey. I did all my recessed lighting 25 in my new house. Should I attempt this job converting window to door?
How do I remove a stucco wall for a sliding door install, what's the best way
That’s a whole other process. You would need a concrete saw BUT you have to be very careful with water penetration with stucco, etc…. Also the finishing will be tough without redoing the whole section, as in patch work is always very noticeable on stucco. I’d hate to say this but maybe consult a pro on the stucco part. Sorry can’t really help there.
When I looked for houses, stucco was a nonnegotiable… I don’t want stucco house.
Would it be more difficult to do this with a brick home?

Sounds great ! AI’d go as big as you can. Also - think of multiple destinations… we haven’t gotten there yet but we’re adding a few More structures/ areas about there.
Can you tell me where to find the door jamb extension? I asked at Home Depot and showed them a photo, but they looked at me with a blank stare and shrugged 'I dunno'. I spent half an hour in there trying to find it.
Try the drywall isle. Should be in same section and corner bead.
I think I would have measured from the middle and framed both sides. So that the door would be centered in the opening. What was the reason for not doing that on this particular job? Asking just out of pure curiosity.
I’m not sure I understand, the door is centered but we laid the door out where it made the the most sense on the inside and outside. Notice there’s another door pretty close to it, so that impacted it. Also another door was installed further down the wall, as well as a new kitchen layout in the inside. Allot of variables… So each job has its own details….

I got a wild estimate for an install like this. What do you think is fair? They tend to charge by job rather than hour on something like this. How long did this take you, all in?
so many variables. Best thing to do is get multiple estimates and make sure your comparing apples to apples. So same quality door, ect.. giving a number is almost impossible.

Lowe's wanted $900 but when the guy came to measure he said Lowe's wouldn't even allow them to replace double window with patio doors, only door for door replacement. Second estimate $1800. So, Idk where to go from here. Such a large difference in rates.

@@1YzeWhoaman6821 4g’s seems high for the door. $1800 for labor for labor seems a tad high but depends on your location. It’s a full day, if not more, of work.
Don’t worry about the fact you didn’t build a header to structurally cover this new opening. It’s people like you that give builders a bad name.
Dude - there was an existing window ! So in conclusion there was already a header there. As a “builder” you’d think you know this - lol. Here’s your first builder lesson, windows have headers ! Lmao !

@@FamilyDIYtv Brother, if this was inspected it would fail without a proper header. The header on the existing window was insufficient, there needs to be the width of the wall X 5-1/2” minimum for an opening this size. The header needs jack studs on the sides and cripplers above to distribute the weight. Don’t get defensive, take it as constructive criticism and use it on your next job. That’s how we get better 💪🙏

Also this door opening was smaller than existing window.
