I find it interesting that they call Piranha Plant a female. I was confused at first because Sakurai referred to Plant as a male in the presentation, but I looked it up and found out that the German word for plant is a female noun, so that's why they call him a her. Then again, plants in real life are both male and female at the same time, so who really knows.

Mii gunner also seems really good. Their up air is super disjointed and strong. Their dair is not that good but both the kick and the projectile up bs (I don't know their english names) can give good coverage below them on top of being decent recoveries #DontForgetMii

You can jump around him on the ladder. The reason why hydrant or hard knuckle is broken is because they have such big range, and knuckle doesn't have a ton of end-lag

7:45 the worst thing about steve is that there is no place for his crafting table to land, which means it will constantly respawn, which means it will constantly drain your resources.
since you respawn with 3 iron always you basically have to down air immediately if you want to use them, otherwise the crafting table will just eat them up one by one.

Shulk is pretty good on the ladder. He has crazy range on his air attacks and can use his manado arts on the air really helping his strength and recovery.

I feel like a good way to make all characters actually playable to an extent is having platforms a little ways away from the ladder that move (up-down, left-right, etc) so that they can’t really be used consistently but can help out characters who suffer from this gamemode (material characters, characters who can’t grab ledge because of the way their up b works, etc)

Incineroar discord actually had an entire tournament revolving around practicing and then competing in this gamemode. Dedede was almost banned because of extremely good he is at controlling the entire ladder, especially with a canceled up b. Belmonts were deemed glass cannons. We eventually switched to a 2 ladder system with 2 stages being options with the ladders at different distances apart.
Steve rising up a ladder while face pressing on it is a good touch from Minecraft lmao

Edit: Alright, I guess. I feel like if the Bayo can play well enough, she'd be Top tier for ladder smash. The fact that she has no special lag is a big deal, as that is a lot of what makes her low tier in normal smash (and don't you bayonetta haters blast me for that tier placement). It really just depends on the combos that can be performed with ladder Re-grabs.
Oh wait I didn't actually think about how regrabbing could be a combo extension rather than a combo breaker. Dang that's interesting. Probably the main thing that makes samus and dark samus good as well.

Honestly i feel like steve could have been a little bit higher because steve can always just create and anvil and gather more iron than he loses but a main issue is his crafting table cost materials when it spawns and because it just falls into the void he is always losing constant materials.

In Germany we have genders for our nouns. We have three versions of "The" depending on the gender, der (m), die (f), das (n). Plant is "Pflanze" in german which is a female noun. My assumption would be that it was just force of habit.

@@Diamond_Aura Lingüistic gender rarely ever correlates with biological gender. Besides, as this is a fictional character, there is no reason why it needs to abide by real-life biology. As far as canonicity goes, I believe that Piranha Plant is female, based on what is implied by the Japanese language.

I would like to mention that bayo's down air can be cancelled into up b but it takes a while so you can spike your opponent and make it back safely though you probably want to do this in the upper half of the ladder to avoid sd-ing and b reverse the up b to avoid saving your opponent. Interesting note, her up air gives her more momentum to travel farther horizontally.
I didn't know the up air thing. Is it doing a single or multiple up airs? or held? this could be useful for normal competitive matches

Please try Road Warrior Smash. Go to the F-zero level with the blue falcon ship but with hazards off. The road still moves but there's nothing in the way on it. The rules are you can't stand on top of the blue falcon once you leave. Maybe have high percent handicap or higher knockback to encourage ceiling teching. It's quite fun, any character can jump on the road and a few can run on it effectively.

It's probably because the German word for plant "Pflanze" is femanine and gendered pronouns are used for everything in German, even for inanimate objects. That probably makes the Beefy Smash Doods subconsciously associate the Piranha Plant character as female.

I think y’all might be underrating Rosalina.
Giant, killing up air that lasts for a billion frames.
Giant lingering nair that combos with the late hit and can set up juggles with any hit.
Large down air that spikes decently and lingers for 2 billion frames.
Fair and bair are huge and send at unforgiving angles.
Star bits seems great for gimping.
Can send luma out to safely pressure opponents who favor being off-ladder.
Has great lateral aerial mobility.
Gravitational pull invalidates a lot of OP gimmicks and will be mad difficult to punish.
High double jump and huge aerials that are great for sharking to help her recover.
High air acceleration will make punishing a high recovery with launch star trickier than you think.
(And I think range is very valuable in neutral especially since everyone is the same speed on the ladder and up and down movement is instant.)
Her recovery is garbo tho unless you get the perfect angle
Now I’m predicting Captain Falcon will be high tier, because his aerials are nasty and he can act out of up b
16:09 one of my biggest gripes with Lucario is the weird controls on his recovery. I’d want to edit a LOT of his moveset if given the chance, but that at least should function a little more like Zelda Up B in terms of control imo. Zig zagging has so little practical use and it kills the user more often than it helps them...
It has a decent amount of practial use in regular Smash, though. Just not here.

Even knowing how the controls work, I cannot say how many times I’ve accidentally SD’d because I pressed just slightly diagonal up for just a bit too long instead of a cardinal direction. I think the controls of Teleports like Zelda and Mewtwo are far more logical, or even if it controlled a little more like Greninja or Pikachu Up Bs.
...this coming from the guy named “Diamond Aura” with the Riolu pfp... I wish Lucario was less gimmicky with basically everything in his kit. With how extremely Aura works (if base power was better but Aura did less that would probably be better), the controls on Up B, the lack of a spike on Dair second hit, Side B midair being almost useless since it can’t command grab, and other things... but unfortunately, his main selling point is “get hit a lot and hit back harder”, and the rest of his kit really suffers from lack of good composition. I’d totally take Aura getting nerfed significantly if he could get some of those other things adjusted.
@@Diamond_Aura I acknowledge your disagreement, but I know of many skilled Lucario players who also agree with what I stated. So I do not think the controls are inherently problematic. It could be that maybe the character does not fit your playstyle as well as you previously thought.

And while other characters have more complex movesets, Lucario’s still boils down to “I hit harder since you damaged me”. He has little ability to gimp or take early stocks if he is winning/has no Aura, therefore meaning Lucario is only good if you feel like you think you can clutch better than your opponent.
I understand he brings a unique idea to the table in terms of his play style, but I still think it could be implemented better, and I feel that tournament performance reflects the idea that he’s basically a mid tier at best in most matchups. Small alterations to his mechanics could do wonders while still keeping the Aura mechanic in existence, just not making it his only feature (similar to how many DLC characters have other types of clutch factors like Arsene or Go! or Winged Form, but those things do not define the character they are attached to, only aid in the ease of execution)

Tournament performance is fine to cite, but you are severely mistaken if you think the highlights amount to anything, let alone convince me of anything. The entire point of these highlights is that they showcase things which are, in a sense, unusual, and make those matches in particular different from the typical match. This is not to say there is no valuable information to gain fron these highlights, but you are not going to be able to establish a meaningful statistical trend from these.

Leaving aside whether this is true or not, it is unclear to me that this demonstrates anything in particular about his recovery or about his gimmicks. If we are talking about how Lucario performs in tournaments, in general, then sure, I am willing to grant his results are not the best, but this misses the point, as I never claimed he was a top-tier character or a character with excellent tournament results.
Besides, tournament results by themselves are a poor measure for how good characters are. For example, Marth has worse tournament results than many of the low-tier characters in SSBU, but no one would actually believe he is a low-tier character, as he is definitely better than most of the cast. The problem is that, why would you play as Marth when you can play as Lucina? As a result, Marth is severely underrepresented, and those who do choose to play him are usually players whose skills are far from the best. Does this apply to Lucario? No. I am not claiming that Lucario is underrepresented. I am simply proving a point about how tournament results, *by themselves,* are far from a reliable measure of how good characters are, and all I did was provide an example. Anyway, this is derailing, since to begin with, I never claimed Lucario was a top tier to begin with. My only claim in this whole conversation about Lucario was regarding the utility of his recovery, and in response to this, you went on a rant about how Lucario *in general* is not a great character.

This has nothing to do with how good Lucario is, though. There are characters with complex movesets that are really good, like Shulk or Peach, and also characters with complex movesets that are very mediocre. There are characters with very simplistic movesets that are bad, but also characters with very simplistic movesets that, nonetheless, are very good, like Lucina. Moveset complexity has a rather weak correlation to how good a character is. Also, I feel compelled to clarify yet again, that I never actually intended to argue that Lucario is a top-tier character or not. In fact, I will be frank and admit that I have no idea what is Lucario's tier placement. This does not matter, because I never made any claims about how fun Lucario is or how good he is. All I said is that the recovery has a lot of utility, and that I know of many Lucario players, some of whom I would say are rather skilled, that agree with that judgement. This has no major implications regarding how good Lucario is overall, and the fact that you felt compelled to explode and begin a rant about Lucario as a whole tells me that you have a personal problem with this character that goes far beyond just his recovery.

Again, this definitely sounds like your problem with this character is definitely personal, and with regards to playstyle, and what you are doing is justify this dislike for the gimmicks by arguing that in he performs somewhat mediocrely in tournaments. Given that you began all of this solely from me saying his recovery has utility, it definitely sounds like you needed some steam to release about this character, which, to me, communicates that you maybe should not be playing the character, as it seems to really bother you somehow. I am not judging you for wanting your character to be a top tier, but if you are unable to enjoy the character's gimmicks solely for that reason, then that further confirms that this is a playstyle incompatibility problem. This is not something I can help you with, either way. It is not as though I can do anything to change how well Lucario performs in tournaments. And I could be wrong about all of this, but the way you are phrasing things definitely communicate to me what I said above.

In a game with this many characters and this much balance, being "mid tier at best" is far from bad, especially when the game is more unbalanced with regards the bottom tier, and not the top tier. Regardless, you are right that Lucario's performance in tournaments could be improved by tweaking his moveset. But once again, I fail to understnd what is motivating you to tell me this, knowing that I never said anything regarding his performance. Again, I hate to repeat myself, but it is very hard to not to repeat myself in these circumstances: it very much does seem like this problem is personal, between you and the character, seeing that you had this much to rant about when I said so little. And when there are other players that do not have as much of a problem with the gimmicks as you seem to have, even if they agree that he is not a top tier, it is difficult to not think this is not a playstyle compatibility problem. As such, I have no idea what else I am supposed to say here. I am not saying you definitely have a playstyle compatibility problem, but your rant and your phrasings very strongly suggest it in these circumstances.

Alright, time to explain why plant takes so long to grab ladder. After up b, plant enters into “freefall” but it isn’t its true freefall. If you look at the animation, it starts freefall with its mouth closed and leaves completely horizontal, but after a few seconds it’s mouth opens a bit and the leaves point up a bit, plus it shakes a bit. This second animation is the actual freefall it has. We know this because when he hits the red trampoline, it ha this animation instead of the first. Hope that explained it
damn i got a similar stage. it’s got like 8 ladders and as a villager main i get to shoot people a bunch
bet you’ll mention how villager can’ grab ledge with up special until he goes into freefall which would be super punishable in your stage

He's been practicing ladder smash since his first game
Dedede is my pick for the best ladder smash character in the game. Part of this is how great his up and down airs are. Dair being a super strong spike that's both both massive and pretty quick, and up air for being almost impossible to punish without dropping off the ladder and attacking from the side for most characters. His other aerials are very good as well. Also, and most importantly, his up b is an extremely strong tool when used aggressively. It's one of the strongest spikes in the game, killing any character at 0 from anywhere on the ladder, has super armor, can cover the whole ladder, and dedede can grab the ladder very quickly after canceling it. If at any point dedede jumps from the ladder to use this move straight up and down, it forces the opponent to jump off the ladder, or contest him at the apex of his jump where he's most vulnerable, but that's still very risky. He can also use up b from below his oppenent to get above them quickly, as the armor makes him hard to hit on the way up and opponents have to respect that you may not cancel the move on your way down.
Dedede, along with some other characters like megaman and g&w, is what made us switch to a 2 ladder meta, so these moves that cover the whole ladder are not quite as powerful. I highly recommend trying out 2 ladder meta. In my opinion, it's a lot more fun and gives you more options to mix it up with

A tier list to rival all tier lists
I like to put two ladders and a small platfprm in the middle to make more characters viable
You can also stall in the air with Cloud with his side special and neutral special.
This is true, but stalling in the air with a character that struggles to recover is not a virtue.
I figured you would not cover the Miis, but I’ll tell you, Mii Brawler is definitely worth exploring. Feint Jump is like a huge flip kick, and while it has more lag it lets you camp and recover safely from distances most characters cannot. Soaring Axe Kick is just a bigger, deadlier, and farther reaching Climhazzard, so you can probably kill anyone forced to grab the ladder at any percent, as it kills at 0 most of the time. Thrupper does not go far but does have a big hit box. Flashing Mach Punch stalls so it could be useful, maybe, as the other two are useless in ladder. For side b, I think Burning Drop Kick would be the best, as it goes very far, can be used multiple times, and does good damage. Suplex could also be good for suicide kills though if you prefer. So yeah, a 2212 mii would be insanely busted for this.
Tier list are the most complex things to do for me, but in smash, that’s hard

I do think Link might be a few places higher if ur really good with bomb recovery, u could literally mess around stalling and shooting projectiles, lol, and there's also his weight and his rang to cover him
