Is 'A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving' Racist?

  • Some critics recently branded the classic TV special as racist, because during the Thanksgiving dinner, the one black character Franklin sits by himself and is the only one who has to sit on a lawn chair. Real fam, what are your thoughts?

    Charles Schulz also had to fight the newspapers that ran his syndicated comic strip, they did not want a black kid in the comic strip. He told them if Franklin was not included, Schulz would drop their newspapers completely and that, of course, would hurt the publishers bottom line, so they gave in to his demands.

We were actually originally called generation Y, but for some reason that was changed. You are referring to Gen Z. That is the generation that is currently in college/ recently graduated and they are the ones creating this ignorance. Please stop referring to these idiots as Millennials. They aren't. B.S. With a little emotion anyone can sound like they know what they are talking about, and Loni is a prime example. When she is not interrupting the other girls, or trying to be funny at THE MOST inappropriate time she is pretending that she knows everything. She was reading from a prompter and I find it interesting that they not once showed the actual controversial picture of Franklin sitting alone on one side of the table.

    • @Indigenousinsight
      @Indigenousinsight 6 років тому

      None of these things are by chance. The truth is, Franklin was originally characterized as Peppermint Patty’s Friend because the public did not want him at school with the “white” kids. He sat on the side of the table by himself because she could not look comfortable and friendly with any of the “white” girls. I really try to like Loni, but she disappoints me every time it is time to get “REAL”!

I was going to comment on this yesterday saying that not everything is racist, but I am glad they posted this version of the video and people can see for themselves this wasn't racist at all. If people actually watched the Thanksgiving special (which I did). Just as Loni said all the chairs are different and Franklin chose that chair himself he wasn't told to take that chair. In fact Charlie Brown wasn't expecting all of those people to come to his house. Peppermint Patty invited herself, Franklin and I forget the other little girls' name to Charlie's house.

      Thank you, Jason. I agree. Just because you aren’t black doesn’t mean you don’t ever face discrimination. People are discriminated against all the time. It doesn’t have to be for your skin color. It can be for your gender, your religion, the list goes on. Oh but I forgot. I’m white so I’m automatically “privileged”. The people who think this way are the real racists.

    • @nataliec1964
      @nataliec1964 6 років тому +2

      Abc123 “white privilege” is just a way to tell those who aren’t black to shut up and that they aren’t allowed to have an opinion because they aren’t part of the group. It’s just a way to silence others simply because of their skin color. This is why I say the whole white privilege thing is the very definition of racism. Go tell all the white people who are living in poverty and struggling everyday to survive that they’re privileged because they’re white. It probably won’t go over too well.

    When it comes to character creation, whether the creator admits it or not, every character is inspired by someone who existed in the creator's life. The creator is immortalizing these people in his/her work. I say this because, I've had people ask me to create a certain type of characters in my own story. I always decline because, this story is MY world, and to conjure up a new character of background, and try to restructure my plot line because it pleases you and the audience, is going way to far.

    Franklin met Charlie Brown on the beach in the comic strip Franklin was introduced. Perhaps the chair was a beach chair as a special nod to their meeting? Also, Franklin and Charlie Brown discussed how Charlie was not good at anything. Thus, Franklin’s chair breaking may have been meant to be a lovingly illustration of how similar or close the two are. It’s not the only special chair in that scene also. Is there a Charlie Brown expert out there? That’s the other problem with canceling everything. Did we learn anything in this TV show segment? Do these actors care about Charlie Brown or the truth?

    There's two things you can count on during a family holiday dinner: there's gonna be a "kids" table, and there arent enough chairs and people will be sitting on beach chairs, and folding chairs.
    Linus was in one too.
    Anything can be racist if you have hatred in your heart and squint your eyes enough.

    ...but has anyone asked that in the 60's during a time when a comic strip is made about a group of children, why wasn't a Black child included in the first place? That's not a bad question to ask, but it begs the bigger question that a lot of times, these types of prejudices are so ingrained in our culture, that we are clapping when a Black child is included and not shocked that one wasn't included in the first place. It is sad to say but institutionalized racism and bias and prejudice and plain overlooking is indeed involved and especially during that time. Star Trek included a Black character from the jump. They were brave...

    this is so stupid. First off he invites franklin. Then he meets him at the door and welcomes him with a cool handshake. What kind of crap is this accusation. This is just weird thought by weirdo's trying to create something from nothing. Big deal if he is sitting by himself. If one of the girls sat by herself that would be predudice against girls. IF snoopy was by himself that would be animal abuse. I am sick of this crap

    The real complaint about that TV special was that Franklin was sitting alone at the table, while everyone else was sitting on the other side. The networks were responsible for that - not Charles Schultz.

    I know we've all agreed that there's nothing racist in the sitting arrangement but like why are we ignoring themail fact that they deliberately put Franklin alone on his side of the table. That's not sth that typically happena in cartoons unless there's a reason in the story why a character is being isolated. Sure Charles schulz isn't racist but we can't truly rule out that atleast someone in the animating crew was discriminative.

    I like the scene in one of these Charlie Brown holiday specials, where Frieda tells Pig Pen, he's an 'absolute mess' and that he's dulling her 'naturally curly hair.' And Pig Pen looks in the mirror and says, 'I didn't know I looked THAT good.' I didn't know anything about this racist point of view about Franklin. But. When I think of the Charlie Brown crew, I only remember the names of Charlie Brown, Sally, Lucy, Linus, Peppermint Patty, Schroeder, Snoopy, Woodstock, Pig Pen, and Franklin. If I remembered the name of the black kid and not the others, he was well represented.

    I think it has something to with a composition. Imagine if he was sitting on a firm living room chair. You can't see the character on the left and the left side of the table because he covers them.

    I'm not surprised Adrienne's asking for people to stop "throwing" the word racist around. She was part of a group that discriminated against the only dark skinned member. She benefits from racism and colorism.
    Nah--CALL out these racists when you see them and if you see them! But, thank you, Loni for the history lesson.

    Sounds like rajesh on big bang theory. If he was on the couch and someone walked in the room his character knew to automatically sit on the floor. Although the show is better about that in later seasons.

    Honestly it would have been funnier if Charlie Brown had been in the chair because that thing breaks but for that joke to work you need the chair in the foreground. Regardless Franklin being included over characters who had been around longer speaks more about inclusion then a lot of shows that are out now. Jokes aside because remember the Peanuts were a comedy at it core Franklin being there is a win.

    With racism being such a major problem and mess in America, it's hard to differentiate equality and racism. Just one racist experience can traumatize a person. When that's left untreated there's choas.

    I'm not trying to be mean but its just something I have been seeing on this show. Every show, Adrienne would interrupt the girls when they are trying to put their own saying into the conversation and she wouldn't allow the others to finish what they are saying before she says something but when she is saying something over the other girls; she would raise her voice even louder just to be heard. I really hate that and its not only her but its sometimes the other girls. They all need to give each the chance to say what is on their minds because if one person is interrupt the other while they are trying to give their own opinion into the matter, it just looks messing. I want to hear everyone's opinions in the time frame that show has. I don't need to see Adrienne interrupt another lady just to give her own opinion. I love Adrienne and I would love to hear hers too but she needs to wait until the other ladies finish. This show is a place to give your own opinion on topics you feel strongly about or not but this show is not a debate, when one person is trying to defend their facts but the other side is jumping in and interrupting what the other side is saying. This is a talk show, so come on let everyone in the world or on set hear what everyone else is saying because their show is timed, so let us hear everyone's opinion in that time frame because when the show is over on tv, I feel empty inside and wondering what the others girls wanted to say because I want to hear all, not just one. Its to much, thats all but I'm not here to drag anyone on the show. I'm just stating something I have been seeing.
