Today is William-Adolphe Bouguereau birthday. Great artist.
Everytime I look at one of his works I feel the enormous amount of craftsmanship this man had.unbelieveble.
Craftsmanship was all he had.

Bougereau’s paintings at the Met stopped me in my tracks (also Cot’s The Storm) when I was in high school..I am still as mesmerized by them. My class had to come and get me because I couldn’t move! I only started learning to paint..still very much learning ..40 years later and was very drawn to your work Scott. I appreciate how humble you are in your discussion..to me you are a master. Thanks for sharing this and reigniting that spark! SOMEDAY I will retire and paint full time! Until then I dabble and am inspired by your videos.
Wow, that is an awesome painting! I call it the best painting that has no brush strokes showing and is smooth like real picture. And that is what your paintings are.

Thank you for posting Buguereau. I am obsessed with the colors more than the shapes. I see a lovely blueish color that somehow doesn't look blue. It goes from a bright peachy color in full light to that bluish color, and then the shadows are so warm and the blue is lost. It's like, when the skin is not in full light, it has a neutral or bluish green cast, but as soon as it's in shadow, it becomes impossibly warm. I think that part of the subtly comes from creating "shadow" without darker values, but instead making it more blue. And it looks so pretty.
Thanks Scott that was really fascinating. It would be really interesting if you could look at a Sargent in the same way and contrast the two. Sargent would attempt to express a lot of the sublety of form which Bouguereau defined so carefully with just just a stroke or two of the brush. I would love to hear what you think is gained by that approach and what is lost.

Hey Scott! This was a wonderful clip, great images of that beautiful painting and very interesting to hear what you have to say about it. Did you ever consider doing a deep-dive into Bouguereau? I know you did a (kind of) short mastercopy, and that's a great video, - but a larger project would be immense! To hear you talk about Boug, his work, his technique as well as doing a mastercopy. I'm positive it would be welcomed by a lot of painters out there. Oh and btw, your most recent video of Paul was fantastic!

I live in Ocala Florida and go the Appleton Museum every week to draw. I marvel at the works of art and the quality of paintings the Appletons collected over their lifetime. Yes, we are a smaller town but we are packed with art studios, art centers and our College is fully acredited .Among the museum's collection are Jerone paintings, and sculpures and a wonderful Elizabeth Gardner painting as well. I hope you bought the book from the gift shop showing the extensive Appleton collection .
I had the hardest time getting the correct perspective on "The Shepherdess's "arm. After three tries I finally figurered it out.
If you ever return , I would be happy to show you the around and intoduce you to some of our well known artist.

Great video Scott. I think he would use large flat hog hair brushes for his starts. I have noticed that sometimes using large brushes can give you the feeling of modeling the large forms. He surely covered the whole large forms of the face in one sitting. He would use siccatives and continue the next day with smaller brushes glazing ( or apply thinner paint) over the parts. You, on the other hand, work form by form from the start. I don't know how you do it. 😂

Great paintings not only represent reality ( photos can do that ) , but is reinterpreated by the artist in a unique way.

Probably the most technical painter of all the times.
The first time I saw one of his paintings was “The Broken Pitcher” at the Legion of Honor in San Francisco and it stopped me in my tracks. I don’t think there has been a better draftsman in all of art history.

Bouguereau uses grisaille technique correct? I often wonder how much underpainting shows through and how much direct opaque paint there is on a piece like this.

That's 'cause last video, I pointed out that "Booger-o" = take a shot in my UA-cam art instruction drinking game and he was trying to get me hammered. Mission accomplished, Scott. Mission Accomplished. BTW, "Color gets all the credit, value does all the work," "Don't buy black paint, mix your own black," and "Zorn Palette" all = chug a beer.

Beware of what you purchase from Scott, few weeks ago I purchase a few painting courses, however one of the links Scott sent me to download the video, was defective and I couldn't download the full course, I've been requesting new links, but due to the only way how I can communicate with Scott is through email or his website, and I haven't received nothing back from Scott
honestly I'm very disappointed with his customer service, if Scott can't send me the link, I would like my money back.

Bouguereau does toes better than anyone.
Bouguereau was a highly accomplished academic technician, but an undeniably minor artist. He's one of those artists that people who don't know what great painting is like - those who are wowed by realistic rendering, and his work holds very little interest for those that love great painting. In fact, it's yawn inducing.
Every painter speaks his own language and I applaud them all.My preference usually goes to painters who I see have the craftsmanship to draw and paint. I would also like to hear Scott's admiration for Bourgereau and why.
But he has his fans and anybody who likes Scott's work will be interested in it especially from a technical point of view. This isn't an Art appreciation channel. People who don't like Bouguereau don't have to watch this, do they?
