Love the video, play & the way you teach it. We run it with the back on a swing & a post on backside to keep the backside safety from coming down on the Dig/Hunt route. I stole your give a signal to throw the vert or post idea. Thanks coach.
Hi Coach, another great video. We almost combined corner and shallow cross together, just for another change up. Going from left to right. Our #1 runs the CB into the endzone, #2 shallow cross, #2( frontside) runs vert to corner depending on S alignment, #1(frontside) 3 step slant and replace OSLB ( stay tall and sit in grass).
Nice video, we do it a little different… if we run y shallow… F runs to the outside leg of defender once he opens his hips, F turns it into a curl. Now we high low that defender. The qb doesn’t have to do a progression style read. We have had great success with it
Great stuff! I've been trying to figure out ways of working with the receivers in a flag football league I'm in, and this is a really clear breakdown. Thanks!
Coach, We run the outside receiver on the same side as the shallow in a post to help clear out the safety vs cover 4. And we switched the dig/ hunt to the outside receiver. Inside receiver opposite the shallow would run a corner. This clears out other safety.
It works really well. It is easier for our qb to throw the dig to the outside receiver. Can see better and Do not have to worry about safeties robbing the dig.
Coach, as always, thanks! In the clip you showed towards the end, the Y went inside rather than outside despite the nearest defender having inside leverage. Was that a mistake on his part, or a gameplan adjustment? Why did you say that this is a good play against the blitz? I like Shallow with a post by the outside receiver on the same side as the inside receiver who runs the dig (With your terminology, the L receiver) rather than a go. The reason I like this is it allows you to do the "Mills" read (Safety bites on the dig > throw the post, safety bites on the post > throw the dig). I also like that it allows you to recycle a route combo with the post and dig, and run some or all of Spurrier's "Mills" play. Similar to that, you could tag your Shallow concept with play action and just have the back run to the flat after the run fake.
+PhillyEaglesFanatic Coach Fanstic, The Y went under on his own. No matter how much you preach releasing outside the kids still do it. That's why you need to work on it every day. I believe it's s great play against man because you can have your fastest kid run away from their man. All the QB had to do is throw a catchable ball and it's six.
I believe I've talked about it before we have 3 different types of shallows. Cross - next WR inside or across shallow runs Dig Under - opposite SE from Shallow Runs dig Follow - next WR outside Shallow Runs Dig If you see press coverage and 1 high. Will you let your QB pre snap the verticals to take a shot downfield
Coach Clarke, Do you run all of them from 2 x 2 or do you run some of them from 2 x 2 and some from 3 x 1? I'm playing around with the Drive series this Spring and was wondering what you do.
Coach McKie I'll run all of them in 2x2 3x1 3x2 and 2x1. One my favorites is Trips Right y Follow. X and F run verticals. Y runs Shallow. Z will run dig. Btw in our trips and empty we don't align our y as the middle receiver On both sides. Trips/empty RT. Y is middle Receiver. F is inside Receiver. On trips/empty Left F is middle receiver and y is inside recover.
mainly so they can get involved in screens and our passing game. your f isn't always catching the bubble screen they can both do it. both can run the drive route. additionally they can just get lined up quicker, but its a small difference at that. i suppose its just personal preference. do you use the follow route often. i love it. nice variation of the shallow/drive route, but you're still reading shallow to dig to shoot.
Thank makes sense. We are messing around with the follow route. It's nice. Quick question, do you release the back to the same side the drag is going or opposite?
Great Video Coach! Since I coach at a younger level (8th grade), Do you think that having just 2 progressions for the QB to run through is fine? Letting the deeper cross be kind of a clear out, whereas the QB has that one read... if there is defenders in area of Y crossing, just dump to RB? How Crucial is it being able to throw to the deep cross (think younger age...haha)
On the F Shallow, it looks like the Y doesn't outside release to turn the defender. He takes an inside get-off against press coverage. What drills do you have to teach and help the F and Y practice the outside release to make the defender turn and run thinking it is a vertical route?
Coach, you're right. Our kid inside released. After this game we ran our drills with a trash can on the dig side. The WR had to outside release the trash can before running the dig.
Here is a good way I just came up with. Quads right Flex Y-Close. Y is your tight-end on the left in normal tight-end alignment. F runs the dig/In at 10 yards (He is 1 x 1 from the right tackle. RB runs a motion to the TE side and runs a wheel read (Wheel, an In at 5-6 or Sit and find a whole at 5-6.) X is flexed ON the line. He runs a deep post. Z is off the line and runs an outside release streak route.
How often do you fun this play per game? Is it different based on what defense the other team is running? Also, how do you motivate the outside receivers to run their vertical routes at full speed the whole time?
+Coach Sheffer Coach Shaffer, We run this play anywhere from 10 to 20 times a game. One time it was the only route we called the entire game. We tell out outside WR they run had so that we can use the Curl tag later on in the game. Also, we tell the QB to throw deep from time to time. So that motivates them.
Coach, how often do you throw the vertical? Are there any defensive alignments that the QB can find pre-snap and know he's throwing the vertical or is it based off matchups week to week? Thanks!
Coach, I know you’re a big fan of half slide protection AND half sliding away from concept side. So in the case of shallow, is the OL sliding toward where the shallow is coming from OR where the shallow is ending up?
Hi Coach, this seems like a basic question but how far in from the side line do you line up your L and R receivers and then do you get you F and Y to split the difference between them and the OT?
Coach Chambers, Thank you for taking time out of your day to watch my video and leave a comment. It means a lot to me that you would do that. I enjoy talking with other coaches. I tell our L and R to line up on top of the numbers if the ball is in the middle of the field. If it is into the boundary then the receiver into the boundary will line up on the bottom of the numbers and the receiver to the field will line up one yard inside the top of the numbers. The Y will always line up one yard inside the hash and the F will split the difference between the outside receiver and the offensive tackle. I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.
Great stuff coach! This year I'm looking to make shallow a main concept. Similar to coach clark's choice concept. I'm looking to give the outside receivers a route choice (something simple like curl-go) in order to stretch the perimeter of the defense. I was thinking of making the progression, Choice, shallow, Hunt, this way when we go 3x1 the read stays the same for Drive. Do you think progressing to the hunt that late would be an issue?
Coach Bananas, I don't think so as long as you give the receiver running the hunt route the option of sitting down in grass. But why wouldn't you go Choice, Hunt, Shallow? Top to bottom.
Sure Coach. You are still reading the same defender. Usually it is the guy head up to slightly inside the receiver that is running the dig. If that guy drops then throw the drag. If that defender stays still or takes the drag then throw the dig. If both of those routes are covered then throw it to the running back for 6.
That is what I do. I usually use a conceptual system for my QBs so they have to learn only one sequence. I made it complex for me so it is easy for the kids. If you want, just find me in facebook and we can chat about it. Here in Southern Europe, we have little time to practice so we have to make things extremely easy, since the guys usually come with no knowledge at all about the sport.
I have been running power football for 20 years . This year with my 13U I am going to try to run Air Ride and go fast-- I love Mesh, shallow, Y stick, Y corner Y cross -- I am going to run it out of split backs so that I can keep some of my off tackle stuff = power, counter, boot, and dive series. If my 13u Kids learn it well I HOPE TO PASS 50% OR MORE. LOL
Love the video, play & the way you teach it. We run it with the back on a swing & a post on backside to keep the backside safety from coming down on the Dig/Hunt route. I stole your give a signal to throw the vert or post idea. Thanks coach.
Thanks coach. How did the idea work for you?
Coach McKie I'll tell you in November. But it's a common sense improvement. Thanks coach

Consider this stolen. Thank you sir.

Coach McKie I'm just a little weary of blitz. If pressure is coming I'm just afraid that if shallow is the third read he won't get to it in time.
I got you coach. You can teach your QB to go Choice - Shallow when there is a blitz coming.
Please put the stick Concept in for seven on seven but it about 73% complete thrilled
Hi coach, can you explain who the read is with this concept vs the 3-5-3
Sure Coach. You are still reading the same defender. Usually it is the guy head up to slightly inside the receiver that is running the dig. If that guy drops then throw the drag. If that defender stays still or takes the drag then throw the dig. If both of those routes are covered then throw it to the running back for 6.

My favorite Madden 17 Play
+MaddenMakeReads !! It's a great play.
Coach. Is the RB part of protection here? It seems like a very short route to be the 3rd option.
+Rafael Marquez You can have him check release, but for us he isn't in the protection. He is the hot route.

ok
ever bring the "Y" behind the line?
Behind the line for what coach?
Coach McKie behind the line of scrimmage to run the shoot
I mean cross
