This is a long explanation, but hear me out. I had another post, but it took much more work for my truck. I fixed my brother's Silverado in a much easier and faster way:
I did this without disconnecting the shifter arm and without removing the shift interlock solenoid.
I used the GM SHIFT LEVER SPRING # 7812853 you can find online. I counted that ring upwards to 8 total coils (including the end coil of the spring), marking it with a marker. Cut the excess spring off at the mark. I then used two flathead screwdrivers - one small and one standard size. I used the small flathead screwdriver to dig out the broken spring.
I placed the new spring in an angle where the old spring goes - you can see the shift lever spring: look at the metal U groove - that is the angle i placed the spring in.
I then used the larger flathead screwdriver to push the spring inside while using the smaller flathead screwdriver on the opposite side of the spring, pushing on the outer edge of the spring inward to guide the spring into the hole. After a few minutes, the spring slipped right into place.
If you want a lever that is stiff but not real tough to manipulate, cut the spring at 7 coils. This method only requires you to remove the plastic covers on the steering column. It may take a few minutes to get the spring in, but it will save you money.

@@jakeclemons650 as far as I know you will have to replace the whole thing. Going that far in might as well replace it all

I don't understand you said there was something you were going to "tighten up" and you never did so I'm lost! ( and the title says "replacing gearshifter mechanism", so now I don't know whether you are replacing it or tightening up said screw you had mentioned....?😔

Very good video! Help a lot! Thanks! Just curious, after my installation I am having trouble with the truck staying running, keeps cutting off if I don’t stay on the gas. Was not doing that before I swapped parts. What do you think?
