    I’ll admit as a Nikon shooter, the amount of quirky changes Canon makes to the physical controls between bodies seems very odd to me. I love that no matter what Nikon body I pickup from the last 5 years or so, buttons and controls are in the same place.

    Question: Related to the R5 issues mentioned, don't you believe it's possible for Canon to address those issues (or, at least, some of them) through a firmware update? Not every photographer has the luxury to update his camera to the latest model, all the time! lol
    I believe that camera brands should support their cameras with bug fixes, updates and upgrades for a longer period... Even more when we're talking about a R5 camera with a 'pro' price tag. I appreciate Canon continuing to support the R5 through firmware updatesbut I'm concerned it will stop as soon as the R5 mark II arrives :/
    I'm still waiting for the possibility of rapidly changing the eye in focus (left/right) as I find that the AF selects more (than I would like) the eye further away than the closer one (in people, at least) or other issues with shutter shock, for example.
    Thanks for your time and dedication!

      There are some things that cannot be changed or not changed easily with firmware updates, and if it is hard to change it costs mofe money to do it since the engineers take more time to fix the issue instead of doing something which brings money, so Canon is less likely to do so.
      The buffer zero issue likely has something to do with the data bus and the memory controller chip. Updating this chip with firmware or microcode updates may not be possible or simply unwanted by Canon. The "slow" bootup time of the camera likely cannot be fixed with an update.
      I guess these things are taken for granted on Nikons. I know that bootup and shutdown time on Sonys are really bad.
      It just shows that no camera is perfect and there will always be trade offs.

      I am sure some of it could be FW, some other stuff may be hardware, not sure.
      I guess the argument would come down to, what's a "bug" and what is by design as Canon would say ;)

    Very nice video as always Jan. I hope Canon fixes many of these R5 issues in the big firmware update - not the R5 MK II. We paid top dollar for R5, so they have an obligation to fix the issues. Additionally, I like to see the overheat warning disappear. I do slow motion 120 fps videos and get a lot of unsettling warnings in the field. Hope they address these.

    Hi Jan, these are all good points. Seeing the wobble between shots when reviewing is annoying. What I would like to see is that when the camera is on standby and you raise it up that it automatically turns back on instead of having to press a button first. Same for the EVF which should come on as soon as it senses the camera moving toward your eye. This seems like a firmware update should handle this issue.

    Thank you Jan - Another excellent video! My wish-list for the R5II is rather short:
    - Stacked sensor (45+ Mpx) and therefore faster readout speed and usable electronic shutter
    - Autofocus as good as the R3 (or even better)
    - Smart Controller AF on Button
    - Two CF Express for faster backup
    - 14 bit for all shutter functions 🙂

    As always, great info. WRT additional items for R5 Mk II, or better yet my R5, underwater shooters really need one button white balance, which has been added to the R5C. We need to change WB every 10 feet of depth due to the loss of reds, then yellows in the first 50 feet. Also, it has come to my attention, the hard way, that WB photos MUST reside on the same card as the videos. It took me several days to figure this out, despite professional assistance. The only way to achieve this is to have photos written to both cards, with videos on the CF Express. None of the pros had been using two cards. Cheers, Dave B.

    I think the 'Buffer-issue' is a non-issue. I can count the times when I got close to a full buffer on one hand. I don't see a problem with the wobble. I 'wobble' more than the camera ever will. I don't give a thing about a R5 II, I'd rather have a FW update for the R5 allowing slower frame rates when using the electronic shutter. And a little audio confirmation when shooting electronically. Everything else would be a bonus.

    • @phelanwolf6747
      @phelanwolf6747 Рік тому +2

      The R5 does not allow slower frame rates in electronic shutter mode? There should not be any reason for this and it should be easily fixed.
      Having some shutter sound for the electronic shutter should also be an easy and no brainer fix if the R5 can output audio.

    The buffer was a bit of an issue for me, sometimes, and this, considering I used as fast a card as I could find, and shot in cRAW. The wobble between frames was never an issue. For one thing, it was completely unnoticeable when just looking at an individual frame. And for another, I shoot with a tripod almost always (for other reasons) but I think since my camera barely moved between frames, that eliminated most of the wobble too. I'm talking in past tense, because I sold my R5 for a second R7. I need reach more than anything.

    Hi, great vídeo! I’m also very curious about the R5ii, let’s see how it will hold up against the competition. What it seems to me is that, even though canon managed to keep the FSI sensor technology alive and competitive, that might coming to an end with the industry moving towards stacked sensors… I don’t think that the R5 will have a stacked sensor, it’s probably being tested for the past 2 years, along side the much anticipated RS one. But it will have, nonetheless, a very fast sensor with one or two modern chips to help decrease readout speed. Maybe the 14bit raw files all around, or maybe, who knows, 16bit raw files and 12 or 14 bit raw video. That’s what I think, anyway, that they will focus heavily on the software specs side. Let’s see!
    All best!

  • @TheWildlifeGallery388
    @TheWildlifeGallery388 Рік тому

    My main issue (fix) would be the time it takes to power up or wake from sleep mode. I switched to CRAW, and since doing so I never hit the buffer, the files are half the size and I see no resolution problem when editing them. With the cards I use I get 99 shots in the buffer. I do get the annoying 'wobble" sometimes, normally on a subject that is flying - I would like a stacked sensor in the mark2 version - but at the same time it's not a deal breaker for me. IF, IF - I thought the autofocus and tracking on the Z8 was better - I'd probably switch to that camera - so hoping Canon does a R5 mark2 with a stacked sensor with better power up. otherwise, I'll wait to see if we ever get an R1

I have just come back from a wildlife shoot over a few days using the 6100 along side my A9 and the compactness of it was great but the number of times things got nudged into the wrong settings was very annoying. Hey Jan - Not on topic, but I watched a prior video of yours' that mentioned dual back-button focus so I tried that out and it immediately clicked for me (thanks!). Now I use one button for tracking AF and another for center point AF and the flexibility is great. My question is, the shutter speed required for moving subjects vs still subjects is obviously different typically, so wouldn't it make sense to map AF mode *and* shutter speed to a single customizable button? For example, custom button #1 with tracking AF and 1/2000 and custom button #2 with center point AF and 1/500. Maybe I'm missing a way to make that happen already, but it seems like a natural extension of dual back-button focus customization, right? Cheers, hope you're feeling well.

    I want to add two problems-one I’ve heard about and one I’ve experienced. My articulating screen short circuited and overheated the entire camera while the camera was in the Off position. This has nothing to do with overheating while shooting video. It cost me $400 because Canon had to replace all three LCD screens (including the one in the viewfinder, and the entire motherboard. I’ve heard of the second problem in which the flash attachment breaks loose. I don’t use flash much but I do put a lightning detector on there. You’ve got me leering at Sony cameras especially since they don’t have that wobble I’ve seen while scrolling through images on the back of my R5. The only thing keeping me from cheating on my Canon system is the horrible Sony menu system that I am loathe to figure out.

    Another great video from you Jan. It's not the camera bodies that Canon should focus on right now, but their lenses, eg the Canon RF 800mm f/5.6. 3,140 kg. and costs more than double the Nikon Z 800mm f/6.3 and weighs only 2.385kg. Aside from the issues with the R5 you mentioned, I have two more items for the wishlist related to the RF600f4. Sometimes it seems as if IBIS and lens IS fight each other when using IS mode 1 for fast birds in flight. The bird in the viewfinder seems to 'jump' at times. Switching to mode 2 helped in this case. The other request is that it would be great if the battery were powerful enough to use both focus motors in the 600f4. It's such a waste to have the motor without being able to use it.

I commented about this a while back on one of Jan’s. It’s photography show with Glenn. I’ve really started moving to turning IS off for fast moving birds when I have fast shutter speeds as opposed to Mode 2, although I am not sure yet that it’s any better than Mode 2.

    Since I also use the R5 with RF 600/4, the wobbling really gets on my nerves.
    In addition, a relatively large number of images are not really sharp in fast series of images - even of relatively immovable subjects (especially in high-contrast light).
    I also often see kind of 'distortion' in the images when checking at 200% and comparing between the individual images in a series. I don't know if this is due to IS, but it's very annoying.
    What I really miss is a second CFExpress slot (or combination with SD) to be able to shoot redundant series without the SD card slowing down the fps.
    In addition, an individual setting of the fps in the ES, if possible with switchable acoustic feedback, would be very desirable.
    The last two points could certainly be solved via FW update, if only Canon wanted to.

    Hey Jan, another "high quality video"...!
    I don't think Canon will listen to user wishes and finally come around the corner with a modern stacked sensor in an R5II, which would be a significant improvement. Thus, as an R5 user, I am not interested in paying another 4500 EUR or more for an R5II, to get features that cheaper models already have. What is feasible should be implemented first with a firmware update. Speaking of wishes, a focus tracking mode like Nikon already has, that just tracks a self-selected spot, single field or group without having to activate an eye tracking mode, that ends in jumping to somewhere if no person, animal or vehicle is the subject. Since I don't just shoot birds or people, this would be helpful for landscape shots to focus on a selected object in the foreground and recompose the frame. So far there is only a servo mode and you have to move the field oldschool manually, like on a DSLR..

    It would surprise me if Canon would offer a camera with a stacked sensor in the $4000ish price range. I don’t think they’ll undermine the R3 by producing a lower-priced model with more megapixels and a stacked sensor. If it weren’t for the fact I’ve bought all the Canon gear, and I knew all the better features of the Nikon. As well as Canons expensive lenses, I would have purchased a Nikon for sure. Canon have done themselves a disservice by pricing their lenses waaaaaay too high.

    I've been with Canon for more than 20 years and I've always liked their cameras and lenses. I have to say though - Canon is in last-chance saloon with me. I'll wait for the R5ii and the R1 announcements before making any decisions, but if neither of those bodies fixes all the issues with the current line-up then I'll switch to Nikon. As things stand, the R3 is the only body from Canon that ticks most of the boxes for me - but it loses out when it comes to resolution because I have to crop often, even with a 600mm prime. Nikon also seems to have a better and more affordable lens line-up for wildlife - their 600mm TC in particular (although this one has a premium price!), but they've also got a nice looking 180-600mm and a few others in their line-up that Canon simply don't offer. At the moment, a Z9 main body with a Z8 backup combined with a 600mm TC, a 180-600mm walk around and a 400mm f4.5 - along with a few others - seems like the best set-up for me. I'll wait for a few announcements from Canon before making that decision.

      I share the same thoughts, but what still irritates me is that Canon R5 has a good processor and a good sensor, I believe many of those things can be fixed with firmware updates. Sometimes I think Canon likes to "milk" its loyal customers. I am still tempted to switch system (sell my R5 and R6 mk2 and my RF and EF lenses) but unfortunately I don't have time to go to find another system and learn it before my vacation. Maybe I will do when I come back

      @@michelebelotti2022 The R5 is a very fine camera all around. My main problem with it is the lack of a stacked sensor. It is starting to show its age in some regards, but if it had a stacked sensor (and better buffer) and everything else was the same, I wouldn't be thinking about jumping ship to Nikon. I still use my 5DIV - I tend to hang on to my gear for a long time - but a stacked sensor, for me, is a must when I upgrade to my next full-frame mirrorless body.

    A much shorter review time as 2 seconds is way too long. A red light night mode like the GH5 when shooting skyscapes at night. When I change the brightness of the screen I need that change across ALL profiles. It is so annoying when you switch profiles the damn screen lights you like a lantern. Why only 99 for a timelapse? Yes yes, I use LRT pro timer but it is not always with me. Updated codecs?

    Your gripes are very niche and specific to pro-level wildlife photography, why would you need to fill up the whole buffer when you can take around 180 photos with the high speed burst? Do you really need all 180 frames? Maybe you do, but the other 99 percent of photographers shouldn't be holding down the shutter and praying they take a good still. And the wobbly frame is specific to the electronic shutter which only the R3 sort of fixes with its stacked sensor but that's a €6k camera

    • @jan_wegener
      @jan_wegener  10 місяців тому

      depending on the situation, ISO and a few other factors, the buffer can be much smaller than that.
      My R3 still has the wobbles, albeit less.
