  • Pool care doesn't have to be complex and frustrating! Understanding the 5 simple basics of pool care will start you off on the right, stress-free foot.
    1. Circulation: Run your pool pump and filter for at least 8 hours every day to ensure proper water and chemical circulation.
    2. Filtration: Do you know what kind of pool filter you have? Whether you have a sand, D.E. (Diatomaceous Earth), or cartridge filter, keeping it clean and clear of debris will help it run better and longer. Clean debris out of your pump filter basket regularly to ensure proper water flow.
    3. Cleaning: Empty skimmer baskets, and brush and skim your pool weekly for a clean, healthy pool.
    4. Water Testing: Test your pool water chemistry weekly by using a test kit, test strips, or by bringing in a water sample to your local Leslie's.
    5. Water Balancing and Sanitization: Use a salt system or chlorine to keep your pool properly sanitized at all times. Shock your pool weekly, and keep an eye on phosphate levels to avoid algae growth.

I always hear “every so often” or “regularly” to clean the cartridge filters but never a real time frame? Once a month? Once a week? 3 months? I know it’s best to keep an eye on the pressure gauge but just looking for some clarification

It’s purely as needed. This is defined by the pressure gauge. If it reads 7+ psi above the starting pressure then it’s time to take it out and clean it. If it is a single cartridge filter, usually it will be about every 2 - 4 weeks before it needs cleaning. If it has 4 cartridges in the filter, usually this will be done quarterly throughout the year. Again, this just depends on the amount of debris the filter has built up. A quad cartridge filter could even go 6 months without cleaning, depending on the debris load.
