Evan for us Brits, this show was mental and left you scratching your head as to what was going on, the humour was so abstract that you could not help but laugh, that’s the brilliance of bob and vic totally unique.
In 1991 Vic Reeves released an album called 'I will cure you' that not only spawned a number 1 single in the form a cover of the Tommy Roe song ''Dizzy' but also cryptically told of the location of three pairs of boots he had buried at three different sites in the UK. Thirty years on, only one pair have been found.

No I can confirm this is a compilation some of the worst bits of shooting stars. Too much matt lucas and jack dee and showed zero gags, none of the format (yes there was some), Ulrika, very few of the games or guests looking bewildered.
Shooting stars was one of the most random shows to ever be on British Television. It was hosted by Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer - both known for their utterly surreal humour who were joined each week by Ulrika Johnson (a former weather presenter) and a deadpan comedian (Mark Lamar in early episodes and Jack Dee in later ones.) The scores were kept by either "George Dawes" an adult baby on the drums or "Marjorie Dawes" a middle aged woman - both played by the comedian Matt Lucas, who later went on to create the hit comedy show "Little Britain" with his comedy partner David Walliams. In later episodes a new character called Angelos Epithemou an odd greasy haired burger van owner (though later he was revealed to be on benefits) appeared... he was played by the comedy actor Dan Renton Skinner... he first featured as a regular team-mate on Ulrika's team and later as the score keeper - replacing Matt Lucas... The show was basically an excuse for Reeves and Mortimer to torture celebrities each week with their completely surreal and (most of the time) incomprehensible comedy.
It's a cool story actually, Vic started doing a one man live comedy cabaret act in bars in London where Bob became a fan, then over time became part of the actual act himself and Vic and Bob was born, Matt Lucas also became a huge fanboy of this live show and went on to be George Dawes in the clip, literally working for his idols, he keeps the scores.
Funny you should mention trying a challenge, cos Matt Lucas´"Baked Potato" song went viral during the pandemic. He revived it, with revised lyrics with COVID tips, singing it nearly every day with a different celebrity singer each time. Then loads of people starting posting their own versions. You´ll find loads of them online. Also, Vic and Bob have claimed that their intention with Shooting Stars was to, with all the episodes together, make the world´s longest ever sketch. Vic started out his comedy as a form of Dadaism. If you look that up, it might shed some light. But honestly, it´s best to not analyse it and just have a laugh. I would recommend "It´s a Kind of Magic - Reeves and Mortimer".
I wouldn't have said these were "best bits". I've seen every episode as it was one of my favourite shows during the 90s! It was absolutely bonkers. There are so, sooo many other clips that should be in a compilation to showcase Shooting Stars. As for Jack Dee, how he ever kept his composure is beyond me lol. He is a master of deadpan comedy. His stand-up routines are worth checking out too!
George Dawes was a persona of Matt Lucas, who was half of "Little Britain." "Shooting Stars" was a play on words, as Vic and Bob used to metaphorically shoot the stars who appeared on the show as guests. Vic Reeves (real name Jim Moir) was a Mechanical Engineer, who became a surrealist comedian. Bob Mortimer had trained as a Solicitor (Lawyer to Americans), saw Vic and immediately finagled his way into the act. Thus history was created.
The original concept of the show was that its laid out like a gameshow for celebrities, celebrities would go on the show ignorant that its a comedy show, so it was funny for the audience to watch their reactions
I can't express how much this show means to me. British comedy at its most absurd. I would say this was the next step in evolution from Monty Python. Iconic stuff.
The closest thing from a similar time period coming out of North America that was also great surrealist/absurd comedy was ‘Kids in the Hall’ which was also quite Pythonesque and excellent.
Ive found the best way to explain it to americans who have never heard of Shooting Stars is that it's a bit like if the Tim and Eric show was a quiz/panel show.
Vic and Bob are national uk treasures, enjoy falling down the rabbit hole of their comedy, they are true British comedy legends. Please watch Vic and Bobs big night out 👍🏾
‘The Fast Show’ was another absurd comedy sketch show worth exploring from the 1990’s. It made it to USA and Johnny Depp loved it so much he got himself invited on for a few cameo roles and the final episode ever.

Glad you went there! Now you get to see what these guys are about :D PS: Vic Reeves is just as mental - they made the perfect duo PPS: the guy they keep raggin on is Jack Dee, another British legend! He the grumpy 'Dad' comedian but plays it so well
This is just the tip of a nutty iceberg; there are recurring themes such as The Dove from Above, Irranu, George Dawes' end-of round drum solos, Ulrika's heroic involvement in the jokes, but most notably the regular cutaway scenes, filmed especially to introduce various topics and which featured Marc Lamaar, Ulrika, and Jack Dee's acting 'skills'!
Their parody cutaway scenes are some of the funniest TV stuff I've seen. I remember one episode where they did Hart to Hart, and to imitate Max and make him look old they just sellotaped crisps to Vic's face.
"George Dawes" is Matt Lucas who did "Little Britain" with David Walliams,Matt was also in "Bridesmaids" & "Alice in Wonderland(Tim Burton, dir)" playing both "Tweedle-Dee" & "Tweedle-Dum",to name a couple!
Reeves and Mortimer are probably the greatest comedy duo of all time. Certainly the greatest of my generation. Sadly, this clips compilation doesn't even scratch the surface of their brilliance. I always found the 'clips round' of Shooting Stars to be the funniest.
Vic and Bob are comedy legends over here. Absurdist humour at it's best. Also take a look at The Fast Show - genius. One of the comics from each show are great friends and now do Mortimer and Whitehouse: Gone Fishing. Possibly some of the most honest, engaging, humorous and engaging TV on in the UK at the moment.
I've watched vic and bob since "their big night out" program 30 years ago. They are totally mental sane people, and every new program has been hilarious
Absolutely loving your videos boys. To really understand the true randomness of shooting stars you gotta watch a full episode. It makes even less sense 🤣
Reeves and Mortimer, the comedy kings of chaos. The misery called jack Dee, his humour was drier than desert sand, and of course, George Dawes, ( Doors), drummer ,scorer and singer, in the show. Yes this was actually a quiz show. Back in the days when comedy was allowed to be funny, I guess you would've been watching 3rd rock from the sun , or married with children. George Dawes also seen in Little Britain.
You guys are not ready for this. Shooting Stars will blow your mind. The funniest, surrealist panel show on TV. There's nothing like it and never will be.
Baked Potato song was something my friends and I would sing to each other at school. Regularly getting us in detention. Eventually I managed to squeeze an analysis of it into my English Literature coursework earning me an A.
Grew up watching these two (Reeves & Mortimer) in the early 90s, and as a 7 yr old kid I was in convulsions laughing. Only later did I realise that they were also huge among young adults at the time. They have that rare quality of being universally funny across generations. Cheers from Ireland :)
Loved this ❤ Congrats for embracing this, chaps xxx Shooting Stars was an 1990s show by Vic and Bob essentially a piss take of panel shows 😂 all sorts of guests and 'George Dawes' the actor Matt Lucas, was always a highlight "He's a baaaabaaaayyyy!" The early eps had George playing a drum roll and shouting out random things which used to make me cry laughing 😂 the whole show is silly, irreverent and completely bonkers which is why it was so loved 😍 it could get a bit embarrassing when overseas guests didn't realise the whole thing was comedy and took it at face value, but it was a telly highlight on BBC back on the day 🤩❤✌🏻
George Daws was the scorekeeper of the show. He was given 4 segments to do anything and not even vic or bob would know what was going to happen. That’s why you can see them laughing away in the background and Matt Lucas struggling to hold it together
Just relived some of my youth, brilliant Im crying with laughter. and you still have nowhere to store those cocktail sticks. George Dawes he a baby, hes a baby 🤣
That is one of the best renditions of "smoke on The water" by deep purple, ever!, These are some of the tamer clips from the show, George Dawes plays the "village gay" in little Britain
@@Bobthesub now there's a question, I think I would have to give it to Vic and Bob, purely for the comedic value 🤣😂😜😎🏹🙏 but I must admit, I do like a bit of Metallica
There are probably some funny clips from Never Mind the Buzzcocks to watch. I remembered that because Jack Dee’s spot as team captain of team A used to be filled by Mark Lamar who was the original host of NMTB.
The first broadcast of 'Vic Reeves Big Night Out' had me in tears. I literally sobbed with laughter... Novelty Island. The Man With The Stick. Graham Lister. The Living Carpets. Mad as Hatters.
Surrealism was at its best with these two, in many of the shows that they came our with . . . Who thought of doing such weird shit this way, you asked? - Well, you only have to look at them in these shows to know who thought of it, as they really do get into it together . . . George Dawes (Matt Lucas) was in the dark humour show Little Britain after this. But you may well be remembering him from being in the MasterChef video you did recently lads . . . ???
Lads, that was one of the most awesome reactions i have ever seen! Your bemused faces all through that was a joy to watch :D You should really try watching an entire episode, preferably an older one with 50's throwback Mark Lammarr as A team captain, he is tormented by vic and Bob mercilessly. Also check out the earlier incarnation 'Vic Reeves big Night Out' for the ultimate surreal experience, or The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer. Vic and Bob are national treasures, especially to us 90's teenagers who loved the fact it all really confused our parents at the time.
Watched your reaction 3 x great to see genuine surprise and belly laughs .Its levels of daft that never crossed your mind but really smart at the same time.
The way Vic and Bob constantly got comedians to break character was genius. This show was truly ahead of it's time and it's anarchic, surrealist comedy blew us away in every episode. You need to check out early episodes or do a review on a complete episode to get the gist of the the show and the relentless torment of the captains. Especially Mark Lamar, poor fella use to get it with both barrels every week. 🤣🤣 Love the fact you have both watched some Shooting Stars and loved it as much as we do. Hope to see more of it on your channel
When Daniel said "What is this f_cKing show..?" - I laughed out loud an couldn't stop for about 5 minutes ! And I was on my own, too! So funny... I can understand why they are not watching a whole episode (BBC copyright etc), but they really need to watch a couple to appreciate Ulrickaaaaackaaa etc. 🤣🤣🤣 EDIT: I meant to mention the 'Dove From Above' too...
George Dawes is the character, played by Matt Lucas. He’s brilliant. You now MUST watch Matt Lucas play “the only gay in the village” in Little Britain. Genius.

You're watching quintessential British humour. Irreverent and completely insane. They were magical together, Bob Mortimer is a national treasure.
You summed it up perfectly
George Dawes (pronounced Doors) is actor Matt Lucas who plays Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum in Tim Burtons Alice in Wonderland films
Omg vic and Bob are the best! They showcase the utter absurdity and uniqueness of British comedy, not many non brits would 'get' this 😂🤣🤣
I'd forgotten how utterly mental this show was. You have opened a can worms here. :D
I had a trip watching this stuff about 25 years ago. One of the best nights ever.
You need to watch ' Vic Reeves Big Night out '.
Saw the stage version of that and 'Shooting Stars'. Even madder than on the tv. Love it !
You lying git!!! 😂Living carpets can’t beat them!! 😂
I've watched vic and bob since "their big night out" program 30 years ago. They are totally mental sane people, and every new program has been hilarious
This is why the British humour is second too none….. we were brought up on taking the piss out of everything and everyone
Loved this ❤ Congrats for embracing this, chaps xxx Shooting Stars was an 1990s show by Vic and Bob essentially a piss take of panel shows 😂 all sorts of guests and 'George Dawes' the actor Matt Lucas, was always a highlight "He's a baaaabaaaayyyy!" The early eps had George playing a drum roll and shouting out random things which used to make me cry laughing 😂 the whole show is silly, irreverent and completely bonkers which is why it was so loved 😍 it could get a bit embarrassing when overseas guests didn't realise the whole thing was comedy and took it at face value, but it was a telly highlight on BBC back on the day 🤩❤✌🏻
Never mind seeing this on a bad acid trip, imagine seeing it on a GOOD acid trip!! Wow, man!!
This show was glorious surreal insanity and I loved it. This show genuinely emptied the pubs when it went out on Friday nights 🤣🤣🤣🤣😃
you guys need to do more shooting stars its just so good!!
He also plays George's mother, Marjorie.
Which is better? Vic & Bobs drainpipe cover of ‘smoke on the water’ or Bill Baileys bicycle horn ‘enter sandman’ 🤔
@@Bobthesub now there's a question, I think I would have to give it to Vic and Bob, purely for the comedic value 🤣😂😜😎🏹🙏 but I must admit, I do like a bit of Metallica
I'm so glad you guys find this funny. This was my childhood. Alternative comedy is awesome and nothing comes close anymore
They made 72 shows of this, and I swear there isn’t one bad one. Genuinely.
There are probably some funny clips from Never Mind the Buzzcocks to watch.
I remembered that because Jack Dee’s spot as team captain of team A used to be filled by Mark Lamar who was the original host of NMTB.
Thats Jack Dee. He always looks miserable. He is hilarious 😂
George Doors 'the bald one' was the co-star of the hit show 'Little Britain'.
Watching this reminded me of surreal this show was, really was on a level of it's own.
But you may well be remembering him from being in the MasterChef video you did recently lads . . . ???
The episode with Larry Hagman is my all time favourite.
You'l have to do more of this show, maybe a full episode.
You gotta see the jack Hall is terrified of Mr blobby end of the year quiz 🙌
Lads, that was one of the most awesome reactions i have ever seen! Your bemused faces all through that was a joy to watch :D You should really try watching an entire episode, preferably an older one with 50's throwback Mark Lammarr as A team captain, he is tormented by vic and Bob mercilessly. Also check out the earlier incarnation 'Vic Reeves big Night Out' for the ultimate surreal experience, or The Smell of Reeves and Mortimer. Vic and Bob are national treasures, especially to us 90's teenagers who loved the fact it all really confused our parents at the time.
He's a 1950's binman.
Watched your reaction 3 x great to see genuine surprise and belly laughs .Its levels of daft that never crossed your mind but really smart at the same time.
Basically, you were watching the inside of Bob Mortimer’s mind. A comedy legend.
The bald headed man is Matt Lucas. He was a Doctor Who companion to Peter Capaldi when he was Doctor Who so you might remember him from that.
Haven't laughed so hard in ages watching your reactions.
Love the fact you have both watched some Shooting Stars and loved it as much as we do. Hope to see more of it on your channel
You have reached the outer limits of comedy with this show....completely bonkers....lol
Straight up normal TV over here in the UK. No drugs needed.
EDIT: I meant to mention the 'Dove From Above' too...
Vic Reeves big night out was crazy!!
George Dawes is the character, played by Matt Lucas. He’s brilliant. You now MUST watch Matt Lucas play “the only gay in the village” in Little Britain. Genius.
Spencer and Daniel probably recognise him from one of his movie roles.. Bridesmaids and Willy Wonka being the biggest, I think.
@@simpsonsama Probably Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum from the Burton Alice in Wonderland and maybe Capaldi's assistant in Doctor Who will have got US showings, but otherwise I'm not sure what else will be familiar.
I loved Big Night Out.That really was surreal comedy.
