If you're still having problems with rats or other rodents that the barn cats aren't getting, check out Shawn Woods. He reviews a wide range of mouse and rat traps so there is likely just the trap you need for the rats.

Agreed. There’s also Joseph Carter, the Mink Man. Not that it’s practical to use his methods or fly him to Vermont, but more to see the experience with dogs, even if it’s just for education and entertainment. Would Toby and Abby get along with a small terrier? Or is it even safe to have a terrier with all the ducks and chickens around? Probably not, but it’s a thought.

We had a huge rat in our porch. We tried to catch him for 2 months! By the time we discovered him he had eaten an entire bag of coconut. We first bought a standard, snap rat trap and from the images on our game camera he dwarfed it! So we then bought a 12" box trap. He still looked huge next to it! We were able to measure his length when he reached up to sniff a cabinet door that had lines on it. He measured 14 inches all stretched out so the 12 inch trap was still too small. He would go in and reach really far for the snacks but back out fast without turning around and his body wouldn't be totally inside the trap! So we bought a 15" squirrel trap. We wired the door open for a night or two until he would go in comfortably. He wouldn't go for peanut butter as a bait so we tried other things and then we found his weakness. A chocolate chip cookie! It worked much to our relief.

That's one thing. Yeah, rats live in family groups so it's rather odd that he's got this lone ranger rat. The other thing is rats never have only one entryway to their tunnels. Where's the other tunnel entrance? Maybe under the shed where there's space?
Plus he feeds the chickens really close to the door when he could put their food at the end of that enclosure. That would necessitate the rat walking several, maybe 8 feet from the tunnel entrance to eat grain that the chickens made a mess with on the ground. Then, if he uses one of those cage traps closer to the shed, the rat will prefentially go for the food that is closer to the tunnel entrance. Right now he's making life easy for the rat.
Rats are smart critters. And this one he's got is fast.

Ex pest professional here. There ARE poisons that can affect other animals but thankfully most rodent control poisons are rodenticides and will NOT affect your other creatures. Tomcat is a safe brand to use for home use. If you want to use catch traps keep them against the wall AWAY from their burrow as they are less suspicious of traps and keep them UNSET then after a couple days then reset them. Good luck Morgan

It has literally torn itself apart trying to get off (pulled off 3 legs) and was somehow still alive.
Had to get someone else to kill it, because I just couldn't do it.

When we had rats recently, we found that putting the traps along the side of the walls made a big difference. So open side toward wall. Rats tend to run along walls rather than out into the open. If you orient the traps so they’re coming at the bait from the side, they’re more likely to put their full head in. I’d pull the trap he’s able to snag food from without getting caught. Also, look into one of the bucket traps.

You should try a Twin Trap, sold by Twin Home Experts, it features a plate stabilizing it, så it doesn't flip over and a hoodie on top of the trap so the rat has to get in to the kill zone to get the bait. That increases the chance for success quite a bit.

Dont use the glue traps, man. Theyre horrificly cruel and also insanely dangerous for your chickens. Plus, you DO NOT want to have to try and get that trab out of toby, abby, or pablo fur. Please, just use the snap traps if you are going to use kill traps.

I mean he said in the video he never uses them but because this rat is so smart it keeps not being fooled by the normal rat traps. He also locks the chicken door and gate so only the rat can get to the traps. It's not the most humane solution but like he said he might not have a choice if the normal traps don't work (and he messed up setting the glue trap up anyways lol)

The glue traps are of no danger in the Weird Chicken™ enclosure by night. The cats, dogs, and even chickens, are kept out of it.

Just an idea but seeing as you lock up the weird chickens in their hut at night, how about leaving their run gate open without traps and see if Tobi and Abby tackle the rat or even the cats? Maybe cause the cats don’t have access to their run they may not show interest? And I also think that the peanut butter attracting Abby and Tobi may deter the rat from coming out. You can clearly tell how it elegant rats are, that rat knows peanut butter = traps maybe even try another bait? Much love from Canada!!! ❤️🇨🇦😎👍

Nestle Crunch Bar bait for your traps.
I used to manage movie theatres years ago. Whenever we had a rodent problem crop up, regardless of whatever selection of delicious candies and other attractants we had in the storeroom, the only thing they would pursue were Nestle Crunch Bars.
Rodents demand it. You won't regret it.

I had a similar situation but the rat tunnels were inside my run under the cement pad for the coop. I would fill in the holes in the day and they would redig them overnight. I had no luck with snap traps or cage traps. I put out 50/50 mix of jiffy corn bread mix and baking soda in a pan and I saw footprints in so I know they found it. I also stuffed unwrapped sticks of Juicy Fruit gum in the holes. Not sure which did it but I haven't had them return for over a year.

We had what turned out to be one Florida Tree Rat and four house mice in our attic. The old wooden snap traps were the only ones that worked - we just had to get a really big one for the rat. The plastic ones just don't do the job. Organic peanut butter drew them to the traps really well though!

The reason you are having trouble with the glue trap is probably outside temperature. The glue thickens in colder weather. If you take it into a warmer room to pull apart, it should separate easier. Rats tend to run along walls for protection. I have a huge rat problem, but I'm in Texas, so it's a constant battle. Rat snakes help, but they also go after eggs, pullets and even took out a full-grown hen once. Just broke up a nest last week on a shelf in the henhouse. But most of the nests are in the walls of my barn room in the main barn. I hear them running across the roof of my barn every night. And they have chewed holes in my PEX water lines under the house. I think I have cleared out the nests in my greenhouse. Last year, they stripped my citrus trees and hibiscus.

Hey Morgan. Here’s a suggestion. I’ve been hunting rats in our garden for a while and have had success mostly with the old school wood traps. Rats like running the perimeter be it a fence or wall. They will come out into the open like in your video but they are suspicious little critters. For your issue, I’d either mound up a little dirt around the hole or use something to funnel the free loader where you want him to go. Place the trap against the wall of you chicken coop right at the end of the funnel area. This will allow the rat to come out and be directed to your trap. Anyway, good luck. Wife and I are fans of your channel and hope to be doing something similar in the near future. Keep up the good work and all the videos.

If you left the door open overnight, either the dogs or the cats would take care of it. Probably the dogs - they are onto him, and he would be a hearty midnight snack.
I have no experience with Maremma, but Pyrenees are excellent hunters. They are patient, good at setting up an ambush, and will relentlessly pursue a snack item. We don't have barn cats, and have few rodent issues. You'll see them trotting through the grass, stop, cock their head a few times, do a fox jump, scarf something down and continue on their way. Our dogs even get moles and gophers, by either snatching them out of the ground when they are near the surface, or digging trenches to expose the entire tunnel system and corner the gopher.
Sad story: Our neighbor poisoned the gophers where he kept horses. An Owl caught a poisoned gopher and fed it to the owl babies. The dead owl baby was pushed out of the tree. My dog ate the baby owl, and nearly bled to death when she had spay surgery a few days later. A dog that loves horses and snatches gophers out of the ground.
