If you keep electing commissioners who are in the pockets of the DEVELOPER, then this is what you get. When you stay home from the small, local elections, this is what you get. You either vote for like minded people or move far far away from Florida because at this rate it's killing you.
No mention of the sugar industry which has the politicians in its pocket and has been polluting Lake Okeechobee for decades. I too remember the crystal clear water. Calusa Waterkeeper does an outstanding job of studying and reporting on the mess.
yes, I remember the research was done, after they build these Sugar Farms, there was no room for the run off water to go, more and more sugar farms, now it goes east and west to the oceans. You see all fish dead, and disaster, it's all the sugar farms, and this lake Okeechobee is just flooding all the time, and black water with chemicals.
Daddy said to me when I was little... what ever you do don't shit in your own backyard. This is what he ment but on a larger scale. People have lost their personal pride to keep America clean. Industrial waste is become an epic disaster.
I know how this man feels. I live on the east coast, but everything here is going to hell too. There are too many people, too much development. Creeks that were clean and full of life are dying and smell like raw sewage from the overflow. The wildlife has all been killed off by these people and traffic is awful. The air stinks and it’s not from the well water sprinklers. It’s starting to smell like the melting asphalt of a city. It’s not just the onslaught of foreigners who just want a temporary home, it’s the increasing demand of retirees and snowbirds. It’s everywhere in Florida. Florida is becoming like a third world country. They need to dramatically increase the impact fees for development.
It’s so sad. Most of the homes remain empty most of the year and year round residents have trouble buying homes they can afford. I never thought I’d see this 😢
Everyone should have been taught how to ensure their own safe water supply in their home economics classes. I learned this in Florida during the 1960s. We lived in a place with hurricanes, thunderstorms, and flooding. We had a sand, gravel, charcoal filter and two huge pots to boil water while waiting for the "city water" to be cleaned up. My parents boiled water for washing up and brushing teeth. If it was really bad water we used bleach to make it safe. Today I rely on well water and atmospheric water in the Ozarks. I am in charge of my own water safety.
As someone who has worked in the water field most of my life. Ever since we moved to Saint James city I have been very aware of the very poor water quality. I believe most of the problem lies with the environmentalists. We need to manage the excessively dense mangroves. We need to clear routes, cut paths, through them to allow the water to flush throughout the mangroves. Not huge paths just 30 or 40 feet for every 3 to 400 foot patch. This would greatly improve water quality and dissolved oxygen and improve the fish hatchery. It's a fix for water quality and will help lessen storm surge. But the environmentalists wouldn't let it happen.
@@mattjohnson2072 I looked at a map and see that St. James City is already on the coast so the canals are directly accessing the ocean. I’m not surprised that the group that manages the mangrove preserves take a dim view of digging additional canals/ditches through the preserve, that seems like it would seriously alter the hydrology and ecology of the preserve.
@aliannarodriguez1581 Actually, it helps immensely. I helps The dissolved oxygen content go up, and the nitrates go down. Which is what the fish need to thrive in. It would improve the fish hatchery and it would also improve storm surge protection because instead of the water backing up into a dead end it would allow the water to flow freely through the mangroves. I'm not talking about digging new canals. They don't need to be that deep they just need to be able to let low tide to Mid tide water to flow through them.
"Poop water" can be treated relatively ez to be made cleaner then bottled water, fertilizer is slightly harder. But both can be treated at the same time. The biggest problem is the environmentalists will not allow anyone to, rather cheaply, clean it up.
If you really look at who is on the City, County, state boards in Florida, they are mostly Developers, Realtors or those in the pocket of them. The flooding we have recently is nothing to what is coming. Thousands of acres that were able to absorb water is now being paved over, developed and destroyed.
The Florida legislature has a Senate standing committee on Environmental Preservation and Conservation. This committee is responsible for many facets of environmental policy, including air and water quality, alternative energy, coastal management, environmental land acquisition and protection, environmental resource permitting, the Florida Everglades, and hazardous and solid waste, among other environmental issues. The committee also conducts oversight of the Florida Department of Environmental Protection and its staff. Spent 2022 $4,157,964,480 : Great Job, what a bargain!
So run a water test then report. All this is just speculation. Why is the water brown and what can we all do to fix it? Put a bit of effort into the news.
This guy on the video, obviously from New England, is clueless to the fact that he is part of the problem. Everyone moving to Florida and straining ALL of the resources with the overcrowding.
Our governors hands are tied because of federal environmental policies. The environmentalists have almost full control over letting us fix this problem.
Big Agriculture wins and the water and animals suffer. Opening the channel from Lake Okeechobee carries the pesticides and herbicides into the canals and everglades eventually to the Ocean. Sad. Money is the root of all evil.
Before he moved there it was really nice. Before developers cut the canals it was nice. Before the influx of out of staters and foreigners it was Florida
Be proactive! If these fatalities are on well water. Please alert neighbors to have the local wells checked. Legionaries used to run rampant in this third world country. Collier county was more reported. I’ve heard of legionnaires in neighborhood pockets. I know houses occupied that have have homeowners in them now where I know the previous homeowners died from legionnaires in collier county. Always ask a local water guy. Sometimes doctors just read books and state what’s written. These are facts.
Like the recycling industry they like to blame the land owners for fertilizing their lawns while the water is already full of blue/green algae when it gets there.
I thought most people were used to this particular accent by now as it’s become very common. India produces a lot of medical doctors and we need more physicians than we have so there are a lot who have come here.
Aren't they the citizens that want to do away from regulations from companies? This will only get worse, if regulations are abandoned. Corporations only care about profit, not citizens.
Im glad I enjoyed the best of it, the wife and I are moving out of florida since everyone is moving down here, it is only going to get worse, like red tide all year long and the fish will become toxic, we have been here for 60 yrs. Will not miss it. Good luck.😊
I swim alot in west central Florida, im considering doing my own water testing , the past years the dangerous bacteria levels sign would be posted from time to time , This year I haven't seen it once , even after the hurricane . Its got me wondering mathematically speaking 🤔
People can pile on Florida (just jealous) but I’ve worked all over the US. One of the contributing factors is illegals and people from other countries coming in unvetted. This is common in border states, various fevers, scarlet fever, TB has come back. Leprosy. So expect more folks. Flooding in Florida and other places can make things worse but try being in flood waters in California with illegals and homeless all over. Thank the politicians and open border democrats
The hype created from your news sources is ridiculous. These statements from neighbors in Cherry Estates are not well informed enough people to make those statements. I have been in St. James City since 1987 as well. The water clarity is affected by water coming down the Calousahatche River. If there is a lot of rain we are going to see chocolate colored water in our canals. We are right next to the Caloosahatche River mouth. Yes we have ugly water sometimes. Your news office could have the water tested. The doctor just said that the water is a moving body of water and highly unlikely to cause illness. I don’t think this is responsible reporting.
