been a while since I've be so strestout by watchign someone using a table saw.
blade as maximum height. pushing rounded pieces with hands inches away from the saw.
oooh boy. cool stuff but my prayers go out to this artisan that he keeps being lucky.
I agree. There is a reason for the blade height, however. At that height, the blade is in a downward motion where the piece of wood is touching. Lowering the blade would cause the wood to kick back towards him because it would be forward motion at that angle...or backwards, depending on perspective. Either way, its so risky to be working that close to the blade. You'd think they could come up with some sort of jig to cut a bunch of these are once and not need to be so close.

I'm sure that man has had more time sitting at that table saw than I have had at my kitchen table in the last 35 years, but it still set my alarm bells ringing when I saw how close his fingers were to that spinning blade. Sure, he's an artisan well practiced and highly trained, but humans twitch and get distracted and complacent. I respect the skill immensely, but it seems like something bad just waiting to happen.
It certainly looks dangerous.
With over 20 years of experience under his belt, I don't think he makes easy mistakes!!!
I moved to Japan from NY. A lot of "slappiness", when it comes to security (staircases without railing, machinery without safety guards, dangerous crossroads..). My conclusion is: high standard safety takes a lot of money and some places (included my original Country-Italy) prefer to cut the costs. There are last generation table saw, extremely precise and very safe, but the cost.... Anyway, just my thought (sorry for breaking your romantic mood about this).
After all those hours, I still count 10 fingers, so he obviously knows what he's doing 😀
Agreed. It made me nervous watching him work. It reminded me of my grandfather who worked a cotton gin. Every day he went to work with 10 fingers and a wooden switch. Every day he came home with 10 fingers but he didn't always come up with the switch.
I'm not saying he's doing a bad job, or even that he's not very aware of what and how he's doing his job. Just that as someone who is responsible at my job for ensuring that any work is performed safely, it makes me want to give him a pusher block.
Even the shop and tools are absolutely beautiful.

Its funny to me at 0:28 the 'guide' piece of wood on the saw looks like its been there since the 1800's and looks better than wood you can buy at any hardware store

将棋の駒、木の種類の他にも文字の書き方でまた値段変わってくるのよなぁ…
今回のは彫った所に色を付ける物で、他にも彫った所を埋めてるもの、さらに盛ってるものの2種類あったはず。
そうですね、様々な種類があります！
また、文字の色をカラフルにすることもできます！
自分なら、文字彫りはNCマシニングで削れるとこは削って、払いとは細くなるとこだけ手作業とかにするな、、、

They are called infantry and are the pawns in chess.

what kind of paper is on when engraving?
It is Japanese paper, thin typing paper, or tracing paper.
We call it "Jiboshi". 字母紙

why not use laser engraving same results and so much faster

A laser isn't going to leave _quite_ the same cuts as a knife. Also, a lot of people will pay more for shogi goma cut by hand than something more suited to mass production. Just like a lot of people would rather have a hand turned & carved Staunton chess set of natural materials than one of cast plastic, even though the latter is faster and less expensive.

Прямо-таки 10 лет нужно учиться ножиком деревяшку ковырять у нас в СССР были различные кружки в том числе художественная резьба по дереву мои сверстники неплохо в липе ковырялись! А тут если японская то как не посмотришь всё такое особенное заковыристое, а по жизни то длинными ножами людей режут живьём,то щепочки какие-то раскрашивают!

Самшит очень ядовитое дерево. Контактировать с самшитом и тем более дышать пылью очень опасно для здоровья. Нужно работать с респиратор. Если пить регулярно воду с кружки сделанной с самшита, можно умереть.
