I’m with you Chris. I have a 2019 rim brake Edmonda and I will not upgrade to disc and have no reason too… it will flip one day and rim brake will be vintage cool.
Same here still riding an old diamond back I bought back in 2007. For a budget bike its not bad at ~14 KG. I am a bigger guy and upgraded to 28c tires biggest i can fit on this bike. Made a world of difference because I don't have to max the tires out. Still all stock parts although there is some wear now.
I am riding a 2012 Litespeed C1R frame (semi-rare carbon bike from Litespeed who is better know for their titanium bike frames) with 10 speed Ultegra DI2, rim brakes, and 700x23c tires on alloy wheels and I am perfectly happy with this combo. I see absolutely no need to upgrade to a disc brake bike or a frame that can take 28mm or 30mm width tires. I could probably fit 25mm tires on this frame but I have been riding 700x23c tires for years and years. Industry people are only interested in selling their customer's the latest new product so naturally they are going to answer questions like this with "Oh, you HAVE to upgrade to a newer bike with feature XYZ"
Couldn’t agree with you more Chris! Still on my 6.3k super six evo from 2012 (size 58) wouldn’t consider taking on another kilo or more for the latest greatest!
A year ago I bought a tarmac sl6 pro rim 2019 with ultegra for 1600 euros and upgraded it with some cheap and light ICAN wheels. It weighs with ultegra pedals/mount/alloy stem&bar/... in at 7.1 kgs. My LBS told me "I went for a quick spin with it to check the shifting, and woah it's so light and responsive. You really don't need anything more than this."
@@johnflynn4923 for the price they surely are. But the Carbon layup at the brake surface isn't the best (wheel vibrates when braking hard) and hubs also are just decent.

I still own and ride my first road bike - a 1999 Giant TCR alloy frame with Shimano 6600 shifters and hand-built light wheels. It rides reasonably well and is extremely comfortable (due to the slender 1" Look fork I retrofitted), and weighs in at 7.5kg including pedals. I do have some "modern" bikes, but prefer older bikes (generally the design more than 10 years ago) which are elegant, light and so easy to service and a lot of fun to tinker with. It's sad to see the road bikes nowadays are overbuilt, complicated, heavy and chasing marginal gains. But whatever, I don't plan to buy new bikes and have a hoard of "obsolete" parts to last for quite a while.
I feel like comfort there are many factors affecting it such as seat type ,handlebars aswell as tyres that the only way to tell would be have 2 similar builds and swap out the wheels or tyres
Hey Robert, I think that gets lost as well people get so caught up in the frame being the main element but you are right tyres handlebar even bar tape makes a difference
I have a 2019 Canyon Ultimate and 2016 Fuji Roubaix, both rim brake. I have made enough upgrades to both of them to last a lifetime. I won't be riding a disc brake bike anytime soon.
All my training is indoors on Zwift and not affected by the weather. I have 5 to 7 regular Zwift races each week. I then do group rides outdoors for the social aspect of cycling. I find the weather too unpredictable to plan around.
The new 2021 Trek Emonda SL5 "Lightweight Climbing Bike "(disc brakes) weighs in at a porky 20.5lbs(9.3kg) with no pedals and costs $4000 Canadian. I bought instead a $2500 Giant TCR 2011 Rim Brakes and it weighs 3lbs less than the lightweight Trek for $1500 less. With that $1500 I bought lighter wheels and a few other lightweight upgrades. Now for about the same $ the TCR has better wheels and weighs 4lbs less than the Disc Brake Emonda.

What a refreshing opinion on bikes and weight! I've a 2020 Bianchi Specialissima and I deliberately bought that version because of it having rim brakes before the 2021 model arrived. I've disks on my MTB and have no desire to do the same on my road bike at the moment. It's crazy how people think you cannot ride a bike in winter on less than 32mm tyre and disks.
