I owned 3 Scouts before you were born and 2 after. Wish still had them. But, no International dosn't make Case tractors. Case purchased the International Harvester name when the company filed for bankruptcy in 1981 following a fuel shortage and employees had a strike. Oh, and no its not just a normal run of the mill V8. Its either a 266 or 304 SV8. One of the toughest V8's ever built I believe chrome steel alloy if I remember correctly. They were severe duty power plants low rpm high torque. A true 4 wheel drive. Nice truck.

Yeah, the 304 wasn't a bad engine. Lousy mileage but very reliable. I've had Scouts with 304s and 345s. Even had one I dropped an IH 392 from a dump truck in. It's still sitting in the back of my garage even though it hasn't been run in almost 20 years. Built 392, Dana 300 transfer case from a 1980 Scout and a Torqueflite 727 transmission with low gear kit, shift kit and aftermarket torque converter. Low gear kit allowed me to run 3:54 axle gears with 33" tires. The 4" lift was the weak link. Really should have gone spring over axle. It has a Detroit Locker in the rear and posi up front.

All my Scouts had 3.73 rears except the 4 cyl Commanchee that wzs 4.11 and my Travelall had a 1 ton 6.52.1 rear. All were tough, reliable, pull anything, go anywhere. Gas mileage wasn't great, but I could get 17 mpg highway. If I toed something a ton or more my mileage improved, as high as 20 mpg highway with the Federal SV8 engines. But, thats due impart to the added weight slightly retarding timing advance and less digging into the throttle.

@@infernusifrit9348 I really miss them. At one time, years ago, I had 4 of them parked in front of my house, lol. I had a 1980 diesel 4 speed that went uphill at the same speed (slow) whether it was towing another Scout or just driving along. I still have that one too. Engine blew with only about 160k on it. Have you seen some of things folks are doing with them now? Swapping in LS engines and other upgrades. Man, if I had about 50 -60k to blow, I could build a beauty. I wonder if the Binder Bunch is still around. They used to be featured in all the off road magazines. Sometime in the mid to late 70s, IH started using 3:07 gears to improve mileage. I believe it was in the early to mid 70s they switched from the Dana 30 front axle to Dana 44s, a distinct improvement in strength. We traveled to Ohio once to a Scout show. Only time I ever saw the rare (I believe only 2 were ever built) 1981 Scout.

Grendelbc in 1980, last full production year they FINALLY came with 2.72. I Scuts sold them and worked on them. Started at an International dealer in. 1975. Scout II's were fairly civilized but I always liked the brutal simplicity of the 800's. Got a couple of old Red Power guys in my area. They have some interesting stuff.

International is still around they are Navistar. Case didn't buy the IH name. IH ag equipment division was merged with Case.

IH made light line vehicles/ trucks since the 30's on up. Scout 80 started in 61, 800 in late 66 to 71. Scout II from 71-80'.

I think it funny when people say manual transmissions are not good off road. Need to learn how to drive. Lol. Scouts were beasts off road. Way better than broncos or jeep.

You are correct! I lost count how many jeeps and broncos I've pulled out of holes. I even pulled out a big suburban that was stuck and my Scout is a 70 800a with a slanted 4 engine. Sassy will climb anything and pull your butt out of anything!! She ain't built for speed but she's a work horse!! I love her dearly!!

Thank U sir it is a f^^&^ blast I own one 800b automatic it is magic The engineers that designed this scout were probably touched by a special magic at the time they designed it and then came up with this
My 71 800b park in my back door 98 % finish is like a magic spell like witchcraft
    I'll never sell it
Beside I have a social and cultural responsability because my scout has to be preserved for centuries to come I never 4 wheel it at all

I used to live up there by the Wissahickon Trail head along the Schukyl River, drove my modified Scout 80 a few times around Philly, independence Hall, 76, whatnot and to the IH Nationals in Troy, OH... speaking of they're holding it at Fort Wayne right now. I'd say the 304 does 92mph easy, the suspension changed and caster just has to be adjusted. Skyjacker, reverse shackle all the way!
