    Next time you talk to Anytone reps could you please ask them to stick a surveillance mode in it that allows the backlight to not come on under any circumstance other than a programmable side key press?
    Also have better volume control on the fm music function that is way louder on my 868 than the ham audio.
    Also see if they would do a DMR trunking control channel based scan for connect plus capacity plus?

    I think you have convinced me to stick to tube radios or simple HT's of the last century ... My God I cannot remember to program my Icom ID-51 and my old 78 year old mind just goes blank with this DMR stuff. I am joking just a bit, but lets face it what a way to get a radio working just to talk to someone....73

    • @HamRadio2
      @HamRadio2  5 років тому

      Not that you are wrong, because you aren't..but people also complain that Baofeng and Wouxun radios are too hard to program. It doesn't really matter how hard/easy it is, someone will always complain. Baofeng radios are simple. DMR is definitely more complicated than programming an analog radio, but some of the most complicated programming I have ever done was on an Alinco HT. Those menus didn't make any sense.
      I guess my only point is that it doesn't take a DMR radio to make a complicated programming menu.

    From the user manual for Anytone AT-D878UV Page 37: "radios ship from the manufacturer "Keypad"locked per FCC rules."

    • @HamRadio2
      @HamRadio2  5 років тому

      My point with other comments to the like are - there is no FCC rule for AMATEUR radios to have the keypad locked. This radio is marketed and sold as an Amateur Radio, not commercial one. Commercial radios aren't usually dual band, and they don't incorporate APRS. So they are making it for the Amateur Community and putting a Part 90 label on it to appease the FCC, but there are other ways to appease the FCC for an actual Amateur Radio, rather than making it Part 90.
      Having said that, it is good to know that this radio can also be used on MURS and GMRS frequencies, since it is truly Part 90.

    • @Jasonyohon
      @Jasonyohon 5 років тому

      But making it Part 90 allows actual commercial use, increasing their potential buying pool.

    Since it is a FCC type approved part 90 commercial radio, that is the requirement. It has to be locked so no "unauthorized personnel" can program it. FYI, you also have to use the same CPS version installed on your computer to use the incorporated firmware update.

    • @HamRadio2
      @HamRadio2  5 років тому

      Since it is marketed as an Amateur Radio, that really doesn't make sense. You're not wrong about the Part 90 part, but dual band radios are made and marketed for the Amateur community, not commercial.
      Also I was using the latest CPS and Firmware from Anytone, so no reason they shouldn't match.

    • @mike95826
      @mike95826 5 років тому

      @@HamRadio2 I noticed that even on Bridgecom's web site they are marketed under both. The manufacturer doesn't know where any particular radio will be sold so it just makes sense to ship it as a part 90 radio (to appease the FCC) but include the programming cable so it is easy to just download and install the CPS software, connect the programming cable, change the code plug to unlocked, reprogram and done. Some re-sellers that deal only in the amateur radio market may do it before they sell the radio as a perk for buying from them as long as it is clear that it is to only be sold to licensed operators.

      @patrickyoung5348 5 років тому

      It's called Talker Alias and the 878 does support it. However it does not completely eliminate the need for the user database. The transmitting radio needs to be capable of sending the talker alias information. Like D-star and Fusion do. Since many of the DMR radios hams are using don't have the talker alias function and cant send the information. The 878s talker alias on receive would have nothing to show. in that case it reverts to the user database. I think a lot of hotspots will send the talker alias information if the radio dosn't have the feature. But that would help a radio without the feature working thru a repeater. So in my view talker alias can fill in some of the gaps, but user databases won't go away anytime soon.

    I was reading on the Bridgecom site that it had to be unlocked prior to use. I also saw that it was Part 90 certified. That’s probably why it’s locked from the factory.

      Yea this was discussed several threads ago. The radio is marketed to Amateurs, but labeled Part 90. Part 90 radios aren't usually dual band and APRS is an Amateur-used feature, so it doesn't make much sense to put Part 90 restrictions on an Amateur Radio, but that seems to be what they have done.

  • @OG_Zlog
    @OG_Zlog 4 роки тому +1

    It has to be locked to be part 90 certified. That's what I heard anyway

    • @HamRadio2
      @HamRadio2  4 роки тому +1

      Yes that is correct. When the radio first released, it wasn't clear that the Part 90 version and that "Ham" version were the same radio. As it turns out (and I have mentioned in subsequent videos too) there are features you can turn off and on in the software to allow this radio to go back and forth in being Part 90 compatible. But yes...you are correct about it needing to be locked to be certified.

      @@HamRadio2 Awesome, well at least my sources are good. Anyway, love the videos. Keep it up. Do you use your AT 878UV still or have you upgraded? @@OG_Zlog I still use mine. There is no upgrade option at this time, imo. The Anytone is the top of the market for dual band DMR HTs in Ham Radio right now. Great idea about an update video - I have done 1 or 2 already like that, where I update software and talk about changes, but I could do one that talks about things I have learned and my usage in the real world. @@HamRadio2 I should have added to my reply, Retevis solved the problem with their RT-3s, which I believe is likely the same as a TYT MD-380 U/V. It offers the user to select between his Amateur Profile and encrypted Commercial or Law Enforcement Profile. In Amateur Profile, your Callsign and DMR ID is transmitted and it's all in the clear. When you select the others, that assigned ID is transmitted and AES 256 works just fine.

      The reason the units shipped to the US have the front panel programming locked out is to avoid any part 90 violations. I’m sure it is a CYA move after the FCC came down on other Chinese radios. Jayson you only needed to turn off the force lock option. By turning off keyboard lock option you disabled the manual keypad lock to prevent accidental button pushes. To unlock from a manual keyboard lock you press the green menu button then * (the poorly translated menu says Function button, it should have said menu)

      It is NOT illegal to MARS mod a radio, that is why most of your big vendors will do it for you, for a fee.
      Icom, Kenwood and Yaesu still need a "cert" or at least they need approval from the FCC to sell their rigs. They can't just make any old junk and lock the bands down, then sell it. FCC doesn't work that way.
