Derek Bezuidenhout was a gymnastics coach popular with his colleagues and students. But for ten years, Bezuidenhout allegedly physically, sexually and emotionally abused multiple gymnasts at a club in the Free State. When his alleged crimes were uncovered, he took his own life. Red flags about Bezuidenhout’s conduct started early in his career but no one believed the children, and the club failed to investigate the allegations. Now, several of Bezuidenhout’s victims are speaking out about the predator who groomed and targeted them for years while the club and the Gymnastics Federation allegedly stood idle. Carte Blanche investigates why Bezuidenhout’s alleged abuse was permitted to continue for so long.

I get beyond enraged when these socalled people in authority say they never knew, even when there were children who complained, they were never believed. Also the owner that said "if they would have done something wrong". They DID something wrong!!! He also said Derick took his own life to protect his family from the attack on the club by certain parties. What about the attack, over years and years on defenseless girls. Let me tell all who do not know, this scars you for life. You NEVER really get over it. They all talk about the person who took his life, what about the dozens of girls who will never HAVE a life because of his actions.

The day Louise ended her gymnastics career, was a huge loss for gymnastics. This girl was such a talented gymnast. The absolute witch hunt on her is disgusting. I salute her for her bravery. I thank Carte Blanche for finally exposing Derek for what he truly was. We trusted him with our children. We were all fooled. Constantly seeing the comments of "Where were the parents?" disgusts me, because I was at every practice, and never did I see him being inappropriate with any female gymnast, just very abusive & aggressive towards the male gymnasts. He was as cunning as a fox. Very charming & likable. WE ALL LOVED HIM. WE TRUSTED HIM! He fooled us all. :( Just a correction on the timeline @carteblance, this has been going on since 2008!!

Can't even imagine what it must be like for a parent and how you must feel, despite people like that being so incredibly cunning, as you say, very charming & likable. Your comment was really touching and shows how complicated it all is. No doubt, something like that must leave a path of destruction that is so far reaching, and Carte Blanche and you give us a glimpse of it...
I danced, my mum was at EVERY PRACTICE, needless to say these things can happen with a parent in the room. It can be put on parents only when the child comes forth - whatever the parents do from here, they could be held liable.

This story just made me cry. Such abuse happened or happens in some families with a mother present at home 24/7. People who are trusted are mostly the most cunning and dangerous. I am so overprotective with my kids because of such. The only time and place I don’t see them is when they are at school and I pray for their protection.
Since this is close to you, I pray that you heal from whichever way it affected you and everyone else.
These lovely ladies are so courageous to share their stories. You’re giving hope to many victims. You’re still beautiful and you still deserve a happy and wonderful life. ♥️♥️♥️

Where there is smoke, there is fire. Those who were informed and failed to investigate should be held liable for paying the victims for physiological damages. An amount should be determined by a court of law. GBV deserves decisive action, not delayed, to prove to the woman at large out there that justice takes place.
The South African judicial system is guilty of malpractice aswell as the President of the Country

The filth! How evil😖 they were not even remorseful they just wanted to go back to business as always when children have been violated! And for what? So their club can keep winning, they literally dismissed the victims just so they could keep that filth of a man as coach. I pity their children for having such filthy fathers who only care about money and not the kids of other parents under their care. I pray they never ever get to coach another child. They are not worthy of such an honour.
They failed these children. Men just behave with impunity. Maybe these men also have victims. Sad very sad.

And still that club and coaches are going on. coaching and having competitions. Nothing has been done yet about this situation in one week. No action has been taken against this club or Free State Committee. Why have the authorities not taken action yet, against these predators that has protected Derek for more than 16 years!! I don’t know if you guys know Larry Nassar that did this to the young kids in US with doing this nasty stuff to this young kids , it is disgusting man , it seems like a “ all over the world “ thing involving young female gymnasts!.
My daughter does Gymnastics and this is really scary, I'm so glad her trainer is a women. But this makes me loose trust in humanity.

Where were the girl's parents in all of this... If it happened to my daughter I would not need the head of the institution to get things done to protect her. I would rally up the parents and confront the coach myself!

They were involved! They knew about everything and decided to ignore it and look the other way. They are just as guilty.
This is like the incident in US gymnastics a couple of years ago, Larry Nassar was also abusing his athletes for decades and got life sentence for it.
We didn’t protect the gymnasts because he was such a great coach. Please. Pathetic!
The old boys clubs are still alive and well in South Africa. These people do will continue to do whatever they please with impunity. I pray our new Sport minister starts doing some housecleaning here as well......
This is so very common. All men should be dismissed in management. There's a club near where I live and it's run by women. All male coaches must be checked thoroughly and if coaching girls a lady must be watching. Cameras everywhere.😢😢😢
Men teaching where physical contact is necessary, is looking for trouble..
In these days, parents are to blame because it's not just a sport for their children to enjoy, but a competition amongst their piers.
At the tender age, you can immediately pick up something wrong with your child.
My heart goes out to the lady that came forward with her traumatic events because now she will have to relive it and build herself up all over again.
Any sporting federation needs to be monitored alot closer and our children should not be abused like this.
Taking his own life was an easy way out. A letter of apology does not cut it.
Why are parents still supporting this club? Can they not see the emotional trauma in the beautiful soul that came forward.
For the club, it's just business.

Unacceptable that the men in charge keep making excuses and say it’s impossible to make changes to protect these children. They should all be fired and replaced with people who care about making sure it doesn’t happen again instead of making excuses for their ineptitude.
These two men really feel nothing for the children. They knew but it did not suit them to know. They did not want to fire a prestigious coach. Children do not stand a chance
This is far to common in the sports world, it's sad and disheartening. There are some sick people in this world, and sadly, there is no cure for paedophilia 😢
These predators far too often choose areas to operate in where they have the opportunity to be
1) in an authoritarian position and therefore disguised behaviour of 2) grooming these vulnerable children to be groomed.
They DEPEND on the fact that i) these young people will not be believed and ii) their narcissistic cover of charm to the outside world.
It’s extremely disappointing that the adults in control and at the top are so adamant about their denial. It’s disgusting that the prowess of the sport /club and related egos come before the wellbeing of their key treasures ~ the young champions.

@@matt27taylor Thank you for saying this, it troubled me too. I know Donny well he is an honourable man who has always stood for justice. The actual culprits she treated with kid gloves and attacked the wrong person. And Donny was the one that held them all accountable in this.

Well my child will not be doing gymnastics in RSA at all, and I'm going to run criminal checks and investigations regarding anyone involved in any extracurricular activity, if that was my daughter Derek would have never gotten the chance to off himself. And Jannie should be ashamed, he traded the well being of athletes for money and competitive advantage, sick, absolutely sick. In a few years we will hear about what Jannie did....if you get my drift
