Flying Fox In A Freedom Tree (1989) FHD

Novel by Albert Wendt. Pepe is the son of a successful Samoan businessman who rejects his father's world and his Christianity. Although he becomes rebellious, anti-social, and engages in criminal activity, as well as being expelled from school, he manages to establish himself in business. However, when he gets his girlfriend pregnant, he takes on the responsibilities of a family. Through his close associate with half-cast dwarf, Tagata, he enters the supernatural realm of his traditional ways and begins to find some peace and meaning to his life.
Flying Fox In A Freedom Tree, his second book, deals with another area of Samoan experience - with those people who remain in Samoa or who return to Samoa after living in New Zealand. In this collection of eight short stories and a novella, Wendt tells the story of these 'strangers in a strange land' that happens to be their own. Wow... So much TRUTH here!!! Born in Samoa, this is how I remember it. My Father never forced us to go to church. Now and then we would go out of respect and of course we were encouraged to obey village rules and attend school. Guess my Father saw through all the b.s, and made sure we never held Matai titles. Both parents employed, owned land and cattles. I recall my Father gifting the village Minister free cattles for their faalavelaves too. Haha RIP Dad and Mum, you were both right, all these religious and cultural b.s is nothing but oppression. Thank you for movie, we are more than what we've ever been conditioned to be.
