@@NickzAndMikz no, it really isn't... This is just a plain mentalism routine disguised as a psychology trick. Most of what Derren does is just really good mentalism/magic. The psychology techniques he claims to use are mostly just misdirection.

Were you paying close attention to his words? He speaks quickly, giving rules and priming cues that make people use the 'fast circuits' that narrow answers to very obvious and well worn paths. I was even going against this suggestion and I guessed a pika, which is kind of a big mouse.

You're saying in a theatre of hundreds of people not one of them saw a stagehand walking on and off the stage? That's not what happened. More likely is that Derren had multiple reveals for every animal she could have thought of, of which the letter was only one (and would have been ignored had she not chosen a mouse). Had she chosen giraffe, the reveal would have been different, perhaps an envelope produced from his jacket pocket or a large banner that descends from the ceiling.
So they took the necklace in the end.

Probably enough time between the naming of the animal and the reveal for someone to sneak in from behind and place an envelope with a freshly printed sheet under the box.
I always assumed they'd open a little hole in the wall behind the box. But the guy in black idea isn't bad either.
Speaking of which, if this is done repeatedly, you will probably have an A-Z box of typical animals on hand to cut down on the printing.

Naa it's all mentalism. I may not have been at this particular show (think I was) but I watched this performance live and everyone would've seen someone put an envelope underneath the box.

Is it it more likely there is a trap door hidden behind the "?" and they switched the envelope when she announced her choice? It's dark back there, you can't see anything.
This is impossible to work reliably everytime.
Why is that? Seems like a simple process. Whenever you can't see the envelope and no one is holding it this seems like the most obvious reason why.
I think you're reading too much into it with this language analysis. Personally I would have guessed it was a simple envelope switch, probably around 4:38 when the lights are brought up over the audience and everyone turns to look at Dani. This is clearly the perfect time for Steven, Derren's "trusty road assistant" - who is dressed in all black no less - to dart onto the stage and switch the envelopes. They probably shut off the lights to the stage completely to make it even harder to see.
While it is possible to suggest things with words and gestures, Derren would need to be close up to the person and ideally have established some kind of rapport beforehand to make it reliable. There's no way it's reliable enough on a massive scale like this when he's so far away from the spectator and doesn't know how suggestible they are. In this case the psychological talk is just presentation to hide a mechanical method and make the effect seem larger than life.
An envelope switch would be more complicated than what he actually does. If you watch the full show, you'd know it doesn't really matter if he had switched the envelope, because he doesn't get that opportunity with his other tricks.
When the lights went down, someone could have easily slid the envelope under the case.

Ok...I learned this trick as a teenager...The trick was." I can guess whatever number you are thinking of" I ask person in room to think of a number...then after a few seconds of thinking I walk over to a part of the room and pull out an envelope and have the person open it and low and behold, when they open it, it contains the number they picked!! So...he did the same. She picked an animal, he then pulled the envelope he knew had THAT animal written on it. The rest of the show was just to get us to not pay attention to that. He had many envelopes containing animals...after she told everyone it was a mouse, he pulled the envelope that contained the mouse.
There were multiple envelopes, with multiple animals.
No that's totally impractical. There's hundreds of likely animals that one could chose from, and thousands that are less likely.
Why do you need multiple when you can just print the right answer on demand?
If you read his book he says that all of his tv appearances involve no camera tricks and gimmicks. It's all mentalism, suggestion and the like. Really interesting stuff although he does sound like a patronising prick in writing haha

And how many envelopes do you suppose he would need if he wasn't using suggestion to make her pick one (I could understand 2 but more than that is a bit farfetched)? And how do you explain not only the majority of the audience but people in the comments thinking elephant?
it is not useful, and I don't think DB would want it, if people genuinely believe in impossible things. It's kind of scary how some people are so gullible as to believe his - admitted - "showmanship" as reality. DB wouldn't want it. So, hmm, I wonder what Steven, DB's assistant, was doing in that dark corner of the stage when the houselights went up, and everyone in the theatre looked at the girl in the back.
