  • Are you thinking about self building in the UK? If so, you need to check out Micro House Scotland. @micro-house
This guy has taken three years to self build a super insulated mini-house in the back garden of his Edinburgh home. @micro-house
This is the second video I’ve made with Micro House Scotland and in this interview we discuss a range of things that affected the self build project. From Plumbing, to gender ratios on social media, to construction costs and what Micro House Scotland would do differently if he started again.
The video has timestamps, so feel free to skip ahead.
If you want advice and guidance about altering, extending or self building in the UK, check out www.RealLifeArchitecture.co.uk There are loads of free guidance and paid advice, if you need it, you can book a consultation with me.
Micro House Scotland also has a website - www.gre.scot/
One of the cameras we used (my one!) keeps moving in and out of focus, I think the shiny vapour barrier in the background affected it.

Some really good advice and insights here. Thanks for posting. Now that Edinburgh has declared a housing emergency, it will be interesting to see if Planning become more receptive to small residential spaces in gardens?

And here we find out why the local planning authorities are so hated… after costly designs and drawings are submitted; you pay the, to submit, pay to have it reviewed, they get a salary for this, are responsible for approval. Despite this it’s your fault if THEY get it wrong. That has to change. If your plants are signed off by the authority… that should be it and tough if they missed something IT SHOULD BE ON THEM, not you especially after all the hurdles you’ve already jumped through.

Can't agree more Edward, you literally have to spend in the region of 10k on architect, engineer, planning fees etc. etc. all for the application stage. This is years of savings for many people. It can take literally years to process the application. And after all that, it can be all for nothing, they can just refuse it. It's really beyond unfair the way it's set up, I'd say it's borderline cruel. I have no doubt in my mind it's actively set up in this way to discourage individual people from building their own home. Therefore keeping the housing stock artificially in high demand and low supply. Of course guaranteeing the powerful development companies are able to monopolise the market.

And the building regulations refer to BS standards which cost 200-400 so you can not easily check what is required. In most of Europe these are available free, it is only the UK that charge as if Caxton is still printing them.

This is true and it’s a big issue for small businesses and self builders
