I hope people are aware that it's worth checking that the adapters you buy actually control voltage because if you aren't careful you could kill your devices since resistance can change in different countries.
I *do* *NOT* recommend buying clothes in Japan to foreigners. If you're taller and/or bigger than the average Japanese man/woman, you'll probably have to *pay* *WAY* *more* for clothes than in your home country - *if* you can even find anything that fits! Especially true considering shoes!! You can of course buy stuff like scarfs, towels, jewellery, trolleys, handbags, shampoos, makeup etc. etc. because you will not have to find unusual large sizes of them. ;) So I would recommend bringing your own clothes (pants, bras, socks and underwear above all), but only taking very small (travel) sizes of all liquids - like toothpaste, sun lotion, makeup, shampoo, conditioner and other hair products - and then just buy more of that in Japan. :)
This applies to any Asian Country to be honest. I'd probably say the one exception would be Singapore. There are many places that cater heavily for foreigners.
True. Coming from a Japanese who lived in Japan and who is about/slightly above average for women's height there, you're right. I'm considered small in America (5'4, 50kg), and I usually wear a small/x-small. However in Japan, I found the people are tiny and so are the clothing. A small in Japan is x-small or even xx-small. Seriously, the clothes look like kid clothes sometimes! 😂 My mom wears a small, but I bought her a medium, because the small is way too small. I heard somewhere that even tall citizens of Japan have difficulty finding sizes that fit them - just saying...if even a Japanese person has trouble in Japan, expect it for yourself as well.
H恵美子 Sounds like me! Thanks for the tip. My child is bigger than me and she has problems with the sizing for Uniqlo ladies - it’s a pity because Uniqlo clothings are really nice and the quality is good too. She usually wears a XXL from H&M and SPAO. We can’t wait to visit Japan this Dec. Kim’s videos are awesome. Very helpful especially that our trip is rather last minute. Thanks for making them. And please make more videos on essential tips. Cheers!
I loved this video! Could you maybe make a video on what you pack in spring? I am going there in march and I am so excited, and all of your japan vlogs and shopping videos are making me so excited to go ^-^
very happy to see a vid about Japan from the Aussie perspective! Didn't even think about thermals or bringing our own meds. Very helpful advice, thank you!! :)
Gakka86 That's ok! Hope it was helpful! For thermals actually, just get them in Japan because it's cheaper than Australia. But definitely bring your own meds, Japanese medicine isn't really strong
Yeah I agree, we must to go without anything for us, shopping addict haha! I do that for my second time (and my last). I miss Japan, I hope to go soon!
These are some good tips. I live in the USA specifically Missouri where it's already cold, and I'm planning on going to Japan for New Year's from the 28th Thru the 3rd. I've been keeping an eye on the weather and it's actually about the same temperature there as it is here.
Great video, the only thing I might amend woud be bringing your own soaps, shampoos, even hair sprays from home. This can add unwanted weight to your luggage and take up space. Usually if I don't like what I've been provided I will buy my own when I get there. I've noticed that my bags feel tremendously lighter when I do not pack these items and it gives you room for the more important things like...what you want to buy!
Thankyou so much! I'm going on a school exchange to japan soon and this helps so much since I'm from Australia too! Can you give me a heads up on what to bring on the plane like your carry on and travelling essentials in regards to beauty and perhaps a "what's in my bag."
hi Kim, love your video, it help me to prepare for our trip to Osaka this coming December, just want to ask, do you have a video about how to get to USJ, thanks and God Bless.
Thank you so much for sharing! It was all very helpful :D Those heat warmers sound awesome lol. I do the same thing when I go traveling, pack light so that there's more room for shopping! hehe I would go insane over all the clothes in Japan I'm sure. I was wondering if maybe you could do a Japanese etiquette video? Some people who have gone to Japan have said that there are a lot of rules as to what is acceptable/polite and rude compared to american/hawaii (where i'm from haha) culture. Any tips would be so helpful!
The advice about going without clothes from your home country isn't necessarily very good. If you're larger than a size medium, or you wear a shoe larger than a size 7 (ladies) or an 11 (mens), you will have trouble finding garments that will fit you. Don't be caught without clothing in a country where you can't buy any for your size.
As a huge dude, there are options in Japan. Just gotta look. Sakazen has "plus sizes" (Japanese people be tiny) in clothing and in shoes. :D Me and My even bigger friend actually did a "Big in Japan" video talking about this exact point. -Tyler
In the US we also have those small heat packs available almost everywhere and they're pretty cheap, at least on the East Coast i doubt they have them where it doesn't get that cold
I just searched up how expensive thermals were in Australia, since I'm going for exchange in Japan next year, but seriously, I think I'll just get thermals when I get to Japan. They're like $40 - $200 here in Australia right now...
Ha! I live in the US in the mountains and I love the cold (Canadian). I typically wear shorts in -1 through -10 C, so it sounds great. I am currently learning Japanese on my own with the help of Tae Kim's guide. I hope to visit Japan and maybe live there, but I really am not sure what I want.
I'm going to Osaka in a few weeks! I've been to Japan before, but I mostly stayed around Tokyo. I'm very excited! This was super helpful; thank you! ☺️
Hi Kim how are you ?.. i was looking for hows to get travel in Japan and i was a bit affraid caused barrier of language .. this vlog really help me thank you ..greeting from sydney australia
Great advice on packing minimalist on clothes, I'm definitely planning on hitting up Liz Lisa asap and going HAM on getting outfits on Takeshita Dori :D I know I'll need extra luggage room!!
Hi Kim, I'm an absolute fan of you! I went to Japan in July 2013 and I'm going again in July 2014, I'm super excited this time because I am changing my whole wardrobe up. My family are going to buy new 4 wheel luggages there too, I'm bringing only a little bit of things so I can fill up my suitcase. Recommend any other places to shop than Shibuya 109 and Takeshita Harajuku in Tokyo?
This is good! I'm from Hawaii and I don't know how it feels be in 69 degrees F below, and boyfriend and I are going to Japan this January so this helps a lot!!
@kimdoa I’m going to japan in three weeks is there any chance you could try and do a spring version of this video? It’s okay if you can’t. your videos are so great! Thank you for all the help anyway no matter what.
Really helpful, thanks! I'm a new subscriber, just recently found your channel. I systematically went through and watched all your videos on your channel(kinda new to doing my make up the way you do, I'm very much a visuel-kei girl, but getting heavily into lolita recently.). I'm hoping to go to Japan in late March/April, so if you know any good tips I should know for that time of year, I'd appreciate that!
Kimdao , Thank you so much for uploading this video it helps me a lot! As I'm going to japan in this coming 21st Dec and I'm really worried about what to bring along with me as Singapore has no winter. And it's as if that you read my mind when I was thinking if kimdao can make a video about japan winter that will be great! I'm really appreciate that you make this video and it helps me a lot!! I was thinking the same thing to wear tights in japan too with my heattech underneath~~ Love~~
I actually have a very important question for you Kim~ I travel to Japan from Canada, and it's a very long flight. The direct is around 13 hours or so. Thing is, I'm REALLY uncomfortable in planes. The height, the tight spaces, and the turbulences can get me very nervous to the point of tears. I can barely sleep, let alone eat. It really puts a down to my trip planning :( You might not have that problem, as I see many people on the planes just sleep right through the whole flight. I was wondering how you keep your mind busy when you fly? What do you do to relax? :) Thank youuu~
for long flights, what about paying a little extra to sit near emergency window for extra legroom? I've been on 16 hours flight from Hong Kong to USA. I dread 9+hours night flights too so i always ensure I have my in-ear earphones (but there are also noise-cancelling headphones being sold on market) with my smartphone/ipod and my sleep machine app. Additionally, when I fly to another country whose timezone is drastically different from my home country (-12 hours), I also bring Travacalm travel sickness pills. Within less than 30 minutes, I would doze off. It is terrible if you cannot eat on the plane although the plane food, I agree, is not appetizing...I tend to bring my own food to airports and eat before boarding the plane and just bring a few snacks and candies in my bag for the flight...
I've actually tried the emergency window seats and they don't make me feel any better. Actually, it's worst, because it's usually near the kitchen or toilet area and there's always noise and people walking by.. Noise-cancelling headphones would be very good to invest in, I'll look into that! And I've also never heard of Travacalm, but hopefully it works better than NiQuils because those didn't do much for me haha. I actually don't mind the plane food that much.. 9 hours into the flight anything looks appetizing LOL but I'm just so stressed I can't manage to eat anything :/ Thank you so much for the empathetic reply :) Do you have any tips on how to manage turbulence fear, though? Hehe..
I'm probably one of the lucky ones cos I can't stay awake on flights. But I used to be one of the people who couldn't sleep at all and would always feel stressed on the flights, I just sort of got used to it since I fly alot now. What I used to do was I used to bring things on the plane to kill time. For example just bring my laptop, load it up with some dramas and tv shows to watch, bring a nintendo ds and play games, or bring a book. I always used to get really sick easily on planes because of the pressure, and I always took medicine that made me drowsy so I could just sleep on the flight. Sitting at the emergency seats don't really make a difference for me, it's actually worse sometimes because all the mothers with young kids that cry sit around there as well. I always try to get a window seat because I like to just rest on the window and sleep on it. Noise cancelling earphones would work quite well so they would be a good investment. I know a lot of people also take sleeping pills though I have never taken any myself
Holy moly your skin is so flawless and glowy! How do you keep your skin like that here in dry, sunny sunny Australia? I try to wear sunscreen a lot more now because I've been told sunburn causes wrinkles :) Do you recommend any products or have made any videos about this? Thanks!
Great idea about the thermals! They do have thermal clothing in the US; I just bought some for my ski trip to Utah where the temperature was -20 degrees *burr* Also, the heat packs are a AWESOME! You can get heat packs in the US as well, and I love to put them in my gloves and boots to keep my extremities warm :) About electronics.... Does your cell phone work in Japan? Do you have to buy a separate cell phone when you get to Japan or do you still get service there? I'm wondering if it's different from Australia to the US....? Thank you for the video! :)
thankyou so much!!!! i really want to go to Japan!!!! i am learning the language and history, i love manga,cosplay,anime...everything!!!(i am a huge otaku) if i could go to school in Japan and live there for a year,i would!!!! I WANT TO GO TO JAPAN SUPER BAD!!! :'S I REALLY WISH I COULD GO NOW!!! anyway...luv this vid!!!! i luv all of your vids so much!!! i am saving up to go to japan):D AWW YEAH!!!
I'm traveling to Japan next year so this video was very helpful thanks! Also I'm Australian so it really helped when you mentioned Dick Smith or JB Hi-Fi :) defiantly subscribing
May be a dumb question but, tap water/shower/faucet water in Japan. I'm in New Zealand and it is perfectly okay to drink from all these places, just curious where I can and can't drink from taps. Kinda paranoid about bugs etc
Very helpful tips :) Those Uniclo thermal tights look really comfy. I'm the same as you, I buy SO much when I go to Harajuku/Shibuya, and I'm even tempted to just buy another suitcase because it's always overflowing with pretty dresses... I just love the fashion ^^;;
Thanks for this informative video! How much money would you recommend to bring/save for japan? Like a week? Are things more expensive then in Australia?
Are you still in Japan right now? How long did you stay for? I'm going there for a language course this year and staying for 6 months. This is helpful!
Do you have any advices for those who wanna stay 1 or 2 Monts in Tokyo maybe any Boarding Houses ? I dont wanna spend a fortune for some Hotel, i wanna keep my Money for my Shopping Tour :)
I'm doing this homestay.com/japan the best website and how I found my host family. I'm paying $23 a night depending on your host family, you cant beat that. wifi, meals, internet included and more. and you get to experience the Japanese lifestyle.
サントスショナサン Domo arigato, i thought that Homestay thing is free of any charge, because you do some work for the Family in excange for the accomodation ? I'll take a look at thier Website :)
i usually buy shampoo on spot (actually only in korea and japan since i use korean and japanese shampoos) and they're pretty cheap too.. like A$5 for a big bottle, and in sydney they sold it for A$8-A$17/bottle...so deffo cheaper..and if i always bring a bit of detergent with me so i can wash my underwear if i stay for more than a week...don't forget that you need visa to go to japan (not all country, but some still requires visa)
That was sooo useful, thank you alot Kim! :) Btw can you tell us how you manage to know which train you take, the tickets and all that stuff with means of transport?? Thanks again :)
Hi Kimdao! I'm going to Ishikawa during end of Sept for about 8 days. Could you tell me what the weather is like during that time? And around how much money should I have for this period? Thank you!! Ps, you're really pretty and I love your vids!!
Great video. It helped a lot. I found out I'm traveling on Saturday to Tokyo for work. Do you need a credit card to rent a phone at the airport? I'm partial to using cash. And again, great video.
Great tips! I also like bringing Febreeze (the antibacterial one) and spray it on the clothes/ jackets so that I can wear them at least 4x. I also like bringing laundry soap so that I can wash my newly bought clothes. =)
Hi just wondering where to apply for that 28 degrees card in Sydney We will be going in Japan this July And also can you please give us advice where which and what is the best SIM card to use just for data we will surely use a lot of it for google maps Thanks for sharing this video it is very helpful
I know this is old but NEVER withdraw cash from a credit card. The interest rate is INSANE! What I plan on doing on my trip is bring my Visa and IF they accept credit cards, I'll use it and if they don't, then I'll use my cash! :) Interest rates are DAILY on a cash advance on a CC! :/
Yeah I'm bringing my own clothes due to me being a large due to my height. also I don't wear shorts unless I'm sleeping. I'm use to hot hot weather cause where I live in the US it's very hot in the summer almost in the 100 or if not everyday. and in winter I have no idea what winter is in my area but I've traveled way too much so I'm used to it in that sense.
Hi Kim Dao. You mentioned about shipping your overweight luggage. May I ask, do you ship them at the airport or did you ship them before you go to the airport? How should I do it? Thanks.
Should I bring hot pack for winter (December)? at Osaka because I never go winter season. Let me know how much cloth that I need to wear. (sorry for my bad English)
I am Japanese, but I’ve never been. I have no clue what to wear because everyone has their own opinion on “appropriate”. Would you say it is okay to wear a slightly cropped top with high waisted bottoms in japan?
I hope people are aware that it's worth checking that the adapters you buy actually control voltage because if you aren't careful you could kill your devices since resistance can change in different countries.
Wow, i never thought of bringing a multi-plug board before, feel like an idiot, thanks for the great tip, no need to buy more than one adapter.
Nzuser1 That's ok! It's definitely something super convenient since I always have heaps of electronics to charge!
i'm the same, totally didn't think of bringing a Multi-plug with me, the three times i went.. how could i not think of that..
I'm from Norway, so I guess I'd survive the winter in the Japan
I *do* *NOT* recommend buying clothes in Japan to foreigners.
If you're taller and/or bigger than the average Japanese man/woman, you'll probably have to *pay* *WAY* *more* for clothes than in your home country - *if* you can even find anything that fits! Especially true considering shoes!!
You can of course buy stuff like scarfs, towels, jewellery, trolleys, handbags, shampoos, makeup etc. etc. because you will not have to find unusual large sizes of them. ;)
So I would recommend bringing your own clothes (pants, bras, socks and underwear above all), but only taking very small (travel) sizes of all liquids - like toothpaste, sun lotion, makeup, shampoo, conditioner and other hair products - and then just buy more of that in Japan.
I am going to japan tomorrow 😐
I'm only 5 feet Tall and 100 pounds, People make fun of me but I know that when I go to other countries and travel I'll have no issues with clothing
I am going there in march and I am so excited, and all of your japan vlogs and shopping videos are making me so excited to go ^-^
I’ve probably watched all of your videos now! Love them!!! So excited to travel to Japan when they reopen! I miss traveling!!!
very happy to see a vid about Japan from the Aussie perspective!
You can withdraw cash from any Japanese 7-eleven ATM, and you will be set to go!
Yeah I agree, we must to go without anything for us, shopping addict haha! I do that for my second time (and my last). I miss Japan, I hope to go soon!
Some parts of Australia are actually quite cold. Canberra is colder than Tokyo and can reach minimums of -10 degrees.
I'll be spending my Christmas and New Year in Japan this year, so your Japan video guides have been very helpful. Thank you!
Omg, omg same! Have funn((: x
YAY! I'm going to Japan for Christmas too!!! This video is super for me!!!
I wish I will be in Japan during Christmas! Lucky! haha
Hey...so, I'm leaving to Japan in March...and need a travel guide :)
These are some good tips. I live in the USA specifically Missouri where it's already cold, and I'm planning on going to Japan for New Year's from the 28th Thru the 3rd. I've been keeping an eye on the weather and it's actually about the same temperature there as it is here.

Thankyou so much! I'm going on a school exchange to japan soon and this helps so much since I'm from Australia too! Can you give me a heads up on what to bring on the plane like your carry on and travelling essentials in regards to beauty and perhaps a "what's in my bag."
This was so helpful!! I'll be traveling to Japan for the time later this month. Thank you so much for the tips :]
I'm glad it was helpful! Hope you have a great trip!
than you for this video it was really informative. never thought about the multi-plugs.
hi Kim, love your video, it help me to prepare for our trip to Osaka this coming December, just want to ask, do you have a video about how to get to USJ, thanks and God Bless.
your tips are suuuper helpful! thankful for your videos, keep it up kim!
its very cold here right now!!! hope you enjoy the winter !!!
I love winter in Japan! hehe
Most of Europe is 220-240v. Thought you'd like to know.
Ahh ok, I didn't know that!
Thank you so much for sharing! It was all very helpful :D Those heat warmers sound awesome lol. Kelsey Haddad she is asian as well xD tiny.
specially in USA where 90% of people are PIG FATTY
Impossible. Fat people hates those words loool
In the US we also have those small heat packs available almost everywhere and they're pretty cheap, at least on the East Coast i doubt they have them where it doesn't get that cold

Here in Finland we have about -25°C in winter so heat packs would be quite helpful, but we don't even have those haha.
Wow good video I love Japan so much and want to go on holiday and needed some tips and this was the perfect video on thanks so much
Yes thank you so much! I’ll be in Tokyo next month and this video has been SOOOO helpful ❤️

May be a dumb question but, tap water/shower/faucet water in Japan. I'm in New Zealand and it is perfectly okay to drink from all these places, just curious where I can and can't drink from taps. Kinda paranoid about bugs etc
+Tyler Jordan Yes you can drink tap water
Very helpful tips :) Those Uniclo thermal tights look really comfy. I'm the same as you, I buy SO much when I go to Harajuku/Shibuya, and I'm even tempted to just buy another suitcase because it's always overflowing with pretty dresses... I just love the fashion ^^;;
Just i will start learning japanese and in futur i go with my best friend to japan for holidays
Thanks for this informative video! How much money would you recommend to bring/save for japan? Like a week? Are things more expensive then in Australia?
Canada/USA plugs work with Japanese sockets.
Cheers luv, I'm going for the cherry blossom festival and was wondering if we (Aussies) would get a better exchange rate in Japan.

サントスショナサン
Domo arigato,

I'll take a look at thier Website :)
I'm from Australia too!! I thought most you tubers are American.
Hi Kim, just wondering if you could tell me please, where did you get the 28 degrees card from?
Hi. We are going to Osaka in December. May I know how cold does it get? Tnx
how was it?
i usually buy shampoo on spot (actually only in korea and japan since i use korean and japanese shampoos) and they're pretty cheap too.. like A$5 for a big bottle, and in sydney they sold it for A$8-A$17/bottle...so deffo cheaper..and if i always bring a bit of detergent with me so i can wash my underwear if i stay for more than a week...don't forget that you need visa to go to japan (not all country, but some still requires visa)
How much money would you recommend exchanging from your home country before you go?
this is 2013 very young kim dao.
That was sooo useful, thank you alot Kim! :)
Btw can you tell us how you manage to know which train you take, the tickets and all that stuff with means of transport??
Kars Magbanua That's a good idea! I might have to do that next time!
kimdao nice video
Hi just wondering where to apply for that 28 degrees card in Sydney
We will be going in Japan this July
And also can you please give us advice where which and what is the best SIM card to use just for data we will surely use a lot of it for google maps
Thanks for sharing this video it is very helpful
are hotels very cold in winter???what is the best time of the year to travel and get sales when shopping?
Oh! You forgot to mention mention to bring your JR Pass (which you'll need to buy in your own country if you are travelling a lot in Japan) :D
Do you have any advice for upcoming Japanese exchange students?!? What to expect, where to visit, etc.. Thanks so much!! Hello from Russia!
Sorry but I have a question !! how was the the weather in June ?? is it too hot like August?
I know this is old but NEVER withdraw cash from a credit card. The interest rate is INSANE! What I plan on doing on my trip is bring my Visa and IF they accept credit cards, I'll use it and if they don't, then I'll use my cash! :)
Interest rates are DAILY on a cash advance on a CC!
Cute xx loved these old videos ♡
I'm going to Japan for eight days in May into June, what kind of weather can I expect? Also, should I worry about tipping at restaurants?
I'm going to Toyko for a 5 days to a week, how much do you reccomend bringing cash wise for just food and transportation?
Hi Kim Dao. You mentioned about shipping your overweight luggage. May I ask, do you ship them at the airport or did you ship them before you go to the airport? How should I do it? Thanks.
Can you bring your big suitcase when you’re on the train from tokyo to kyoto?
Should I bring hot pack for winter (December)? at Osaka because I never go winter season. Let me know how much cloth that I need to wear. (sorry for my bad English)
the Australian power outlet looks like a really distressed face haha.. Thanks for the video Kim! C:
This was indeed very helpful
Are you able to post a link for the adaptor you used? I can't seem to find a 3 pin aus to japan adaptor anywhere :(
Do you know which train colour to catch if you want to go to shibuya? Love your vids! Going to japan soon so these are helpful! :))

Hi! I'm from Melbourne and going to japan for 2 weeks in September. Do you have any tips for that time? I heard it gets hot. Thanks heaps!
Note with medicine: Be careful what you bring. There are certain medicine (like certain headache tablets) that are banned because of what it contains.
Ur such a nice girl 😍 that was really helpful n btw I love ur videos😘
I'm glad it was helpful!
I am Japanese, but I’ve never been. I have no clue what to wear because everyone has their own opinion on “appropriate”. Would you say it is okay to wear a slightly cropped top with high waisted bottoms in japan?
thermal leggings from uniqlo are so good. i use it many times when i went to korea around winter and yes heat packs. the life saver!^^
They are! haha I never thought that the heat packs would heat up that much!
heat pack is so good. whoever created it is genius!
Thanks, your vlog its informative and straight up. We're headed there this end december, if there's anything we should be aware of or heads up?
Santa Nicole I'll be making some more Japan travel tips videos soon! stay tuned xx
How about debit cards? Will they be convenient there?
The Japanese use the same power system as The United States because the US rebuilt Japan according to US standards after WW2.
Neal Tomlinson is brain dead

Post office is the best place to exchange in Japan
