    FYI for foreigner tourists, carrying you passport on your person is required by law in Japan, and the police are allowed to ask you at random to show it.

      True but I don’t even know one of my japanese friends walking around with their passports. As a tourist it’s absolutely fine walking around with your ID card. Most police officers will accept your ID aswell.

      Dynamo7 tips for you: buy a neck pouch that you can put all important travel documents (or ID and cash) and hide it under your cloths. I do this when traveling/vacations or go to a concert/festivals. Much safer than a waist pouch

    My tip for traveling to Japan is to bring your coin purse, because as I experienced on my last trip to Japan, I had an overwhelming amount of coins than my ordinary wallet can handle. Thus I tried to find a coin purse to keep 'em all safely 😊

      Best advice hehehe. The Yen is very coin heavy in nature; while in other countries they are small change but in Japan, especially if you have a handful, you can actually buy a full meal with it...

    • @keithlim2555
      @keithlim2555 5 років тому

      My advice: try to get rid of the coin as much and possible. For places like store or shopping just use your suica or passmo so you won't be given any coins. Pay only with cash if the amount is multiple of 100yen then you can avoid lots of coins.

    • @Anonymous551656
      @Anonymous551656 4 роки тому +2

      One of the first things I did in Japan was to buy a small coin box from a 100 Yen store. Not only does it hold the coins, but neatly sorts them which I found very useful dealing with an unfamiliar currency. It's not as slim or lightweight as a pocket purse of course, but I never had any issues fitting it into a pocket - and if you carry a shoulder bag, handbag, or purse with a strap it shouldn't be an issue.

    I plan on visiting Japan twice just so I can fully enjoy each destination I want to go to so far. First I’d like to go to Osaka, Kobe & Kyoto in the fall and then to Tokyo, Yokohama and maybe Nagoya around the end of Spring. 💃🏻🧳

    10 Tips:
    1. Cash: some place where you can only use cash; carry some cash, research about exchange
    2. Credit Card: better exchange rate than with cash; global banks
    3. Power board: and bring adapters
    4. Sim Card: check if you only get data or also a number; different packages available
    5. Phone Apps: Google maps for public transport; Google translate if you can‘t speak japanese; Japan Taxi works similar to Uber
    6. JR Pass: depending where you go;
    300$ per week; think about whether it is worth it or not
    7. Suica: you can have it on your phone and don‘t have to use the actual card
    8. Travel Insurance: always get it
    9. Tickets to attractions: research if you have to book tickets in advance
    10. Passport: research if you have to apply for a visa; bring the passport everywhere: possible discount/taxfree with foreign passport

    If you are from America and have Sprint (cellphone carrier) they are owned by SoftBank, they have a $5 unlimited data and text with really cheap calls for the WHOLE MONTH! My husband and I used this for 3 weeks last time we went and it was amazing.

    1 The Japanese people eat rice that is marked by its origin. No Japanese eat Fukushima rice. The problem is that Fukushima rice and seafood are supplied to hotels filled with tourists, especially Koreans and Chinese , without labeling of their origin.

    With regards to Suica. You can only get that card in JR-East stations. Other regions have similar cards but they are named differently. Essentially, every big transport company has its own card but they are interchangeable.
    I also like that more stores are accepting a credit card and that often they do it pinless. The low crime rate makes it so that this is still possible.

    Travel tips? All Kim Daos are spot on, I'll just add a few little bits... this may be a long comment.
    1 - Definitely research Sim cards, my first trip I used my UK sim as my network offered a daily subscription which worked out cheaper on a short trip than a Japanese sim.
    I tried to use wifi only on my second trip.... it did NOT go well. Third trip I got the Mobal card and never looked back, will get it again next time.
    2 - Suica is available on Google Pay so Android users can join in! I didn't know this till you mentioned the Apple Pay n researched it.
    3 - I've spent time in an izakaya using the conversation mode on Google Translate to chat with locals. It was a really great night 😁
    There's a few more but they're roadtrip related (do a roadtrip in Japan if you can people, it's fun)

    When I went to Japan last year, I had global roaming on my AUS Voda phone which works outside of Australia. It was funny when a guy who was working on the pluming at a house back in Australia called me in Japan and also some of my work colleges as well. My global roaming had changed from VodaAU to DOCOMO or something like that, I can still use my 4G without me having a portable wifi but the portable wifi is a must. Already booked for my second trip to Japan in November as I have learnt heaps when I was in Tokyo.

    The tax free purchasing in Japan is great. I got a switch and a ricoh gr for $220(each not together). The stores that do it have a big sticker on their front window. The only negative is some of them will put a sticker on your purchase so you can't use it till you leave, but for stuff for other people its awesome. Also I wasn't checked at all on my way out past the normal airline security stuff.

    I just came from a solo trip in Japan and my tip for you is... HAVE FUN! I was kindof overwhelmed with all the walking, stairs climbing, sight seeing... at the end of the day my feet, ankles and knees were hurting and the next day i had to keep going because how many times are you going to be in Japan? So just remember to enjoy your time.

      I had a bath everyday as I walked around so much in Tokyo, it was cold but I only had one shirt as I tend to overheat from wearing too many clothes.

    If you don't get the JR pass, you could get the Metro Pass which is a day pass for the subway if you're just gonna go around Tokyo. It's cheap and very useful.

    Great tips !
    I just came back from japan and in France too we don’t need a visa for 90 days !
    I also used the suica app but I didn’t need a physical card as the app create a “non-physical” one (sorry I’m not sure of the wording) and add it to your wallet app ! Also you need an Iphone 8 minimum for this app to work :)
    Hope this is helpful
    And I love your videos Kim!

    I'm going to be in Japan with my younger brother starting August 4th....lol in 13 days 🙃 and we are staying in Tokyo with a family friend~! This is my second time in Japan, but last time I was with a school group so I didn't have to worry about much....this time it's just the two of us and I'm a little nervous but this video DEFINITELY calm my nerves! I'm definitely going to plan to get a SIM card when we get to Japan for my brothers phone~! And I'll make sure he has Google maps on his phone so we don't get too lost in the Tokyo train stations~!!! 😅 Thank you so much for this video ❤️💜

    Ah, I just came back from a trip my boyfriend invited me to in Europe and this is such great timing for my own trip to Japan (October). I’m glad you got the suica card thing cleared up because the website actually doesn’t tell you that you need the card first before getting it in your apple wallet on your phone.

      You don’t need a physical card first. I have Suica on my iPhone, separate from my original physical card. I keep the card around as a backup, but I almost never use it. Suica is so convenient. You can even use it to pay for food & snacks at Tokyo Disneyland!

    Hi! We're going in April! We went in 2009 so can't wait to go back with our kids this time! We're flying in to Osaka and out from Tokyo, stopping at Kyoto and Nagoya briefly :)
    Taking our Harry Potter mad sons to USJ (yay!) and visiting Legoland and Disneyland while we're there. So excited! I love Japan!

    9:09 I just want to add that people with Japanese citizenship can get Japan Rail Pass, if you have a confirmation by your local Japanese embassy that you have lived outside Japan for at least ten years. If you are a Japanese citizen with another citizenship (like me!), please still use the Japanese passport and confirm that you have lived outside Japan for at least ten years.
    Japanese Americans, Japanese Canadians and Japanese Brazilians however have to look that up on the internet as they have different regulations.

    Just did a trip to Tokyo+Fuji last month, and we went for two weeks. It's crazy how cash-dependent Japan is compared to the United States, while not a bad thing at all it was just different compared to what I'm used to. Also a mobile hotspot is a must if you want signal while there if you don't want to pay a ton for a new cell phone plan. A friend and I split the cost of a Teppy, I think it was 4 GB of 4G per day and it was like $180 total? Google Translate is also a must! I knew some Japanese because I just finished my first year but my friends didn't know any so it helped to bridge the language barrier
    EDIT: The SIM Card tip is a good one but just a reminder that it only works with unlocked phones! Also for a United States Citizen when flying to japan, they just make you fill out a small card asking for information and where you plan to stay and be at for the duration of the visit. I got a 90 day Tourist Visa upon arrival. Also Tax Free is a godsend but I didn't realize how many stores actually had that benefit! I saved a ton of money at the Pokemon Center DX in Chuo City, and I also lucked out with the reservation to the Cafe by doing it about a month in advance but I'd definitely recommend doing it sooner to get a better time slot! For the Suica, I didn't know you could get it digitally. I'd personally recommend loading a ton of money on it unless you plan to get the JR Pass just to make life easier to avoid lines at the refill stations.

    Suica to phone will be really useful. I’ve been a few times and am heading back in January/feb for the snow festivals. I think a video on tips for different customs etc would be useful for people. The first tip I went I tried to tip at a restaurant. Knowing little things like not tipping etc would be really useful for first time travellers 👍🏻

    Really good tips! :) I've been to Japan several times and going to Tokyo again in October.
    I would like to add for the insurance part: Do take notice what your insurance company will cover. If you participate in any kind of mountan sports it would be more expensive and regular insurance might not cover those activities. My recently bought insurance even had a point that they will not cover any injurys that were caused by any kind of expreme or mountain sports (and even mountain hiking!). It probably depends on the company you get it from, but do read all of the policy agreements before trip if you want to participate in some kind of sports or hiking activities.

    Thank you for mentioning the JR Pass I see some mainly youtubers blindly recommend people get them without explaining it and it's such a waste of money. JRpass is only good if you are going a lot of places in a short amount of time!
    Congrats, you are the first to tell the truth!
