I have used several different types of smokers over the years but this is by far the best cooker I have had the pleasure of using. Holds temps amazing, produces great flavors, versatile, good capacity, portable, efficient/ fast, durable, and very simple to use. Mark Hunsaker has an excellent design. I built the clonesaker just like the one in the video. It is a fun project. Thank you for sharing the video, hopefully more people will get to experience this cooker now. There a ton of these being used on the KCBS comp circuit. Looks like they showed up on Netflix American Barbecue series as well. Go Hunsaker.

Your drum says 1.1 / 1.0 / 1.2. Assuming bottom body top in mm respectively. Hunsaker recommends no thinner than 18 gauge, which is 1.2 mm. How does it keep heat?

I would argue the 1 hole at the bottom and the 1 hole at the top (smoke stack) creates such a great flow. I usually cook at 275-325 and have never had issues keeping heat rolling in the can. I can see how you might want to use thicker gauge steel if you cook low and slow but when the lids are on these drum smokers they’re practically smoking pressure cookers!

Awesome video!!! I’m thinking about making one of these instead of buying it built. How is it working out for you?

It works great! I’ve done several briskets and ribs on it and they’re spot on! Honestly, I attribute the quality of cooker to Hunsaker’s design, the set up is extremely efficient, and is so easy to control, you won’t be disappointed.

@@toneboneking6548 heck yea man. Thank you and such a great video! You think you saved some money building it yourself? What do you estimate the cost was?

@@Colorado4x4 I bought the more expensive stainless steel kit so it was $100 extra for the kit. I still save at least $300 by doing it myself. Let me know if you pull the trigger!

@@toneboneking6548 thanks buddy!!!! You got the drum from him? I’m still undecided. I need a bigger cooker. I’ve been cooking on my WSMs for too long! I need more room and want to give something else a shot but smokers are so dang expensive. Thanks for your help. - Geoff

Found a local manufacturer that sold their unwanted drums. Got lucky.
