  • SCIPRO and its members HIGHLY oppose vandalism, destruction and tagging at abandoned locations; we don't partake in such activities, nor should you. The Southern Medical Center was once known as St. Mary's Hospital and is located in Cairo, Illinois. It is in the final stage of being demolished. It happened to be one of the cleanest locations we have ever checked out as they have essentially gutted the building to remove the left over items as well as the asbestos. This location will not be around for long...

I was born here St. Mary's Hospital in 1954. We left Cairo in 1965 and moved to Colorado Springs CO. Been back to Cairo 3 times it's just sad to see what has happened to our home town.

Hi David! I was born at St Mary's in 1952. I'm confused because the guy in this video said it didn't open until 1958. Do you think maybe the Hospital was in a different location prior to 1958. My birth certificate says the address was 817 - 22nd st Cairo IL.

Thank-you for the tour! Is it possible you could be wrong about the opening date? You say it was opened in 1958. I was born at St Mary's in 1952. My birth certificate gives the address as being 817 - 22nd st. Cairo IL. Can you confirm if that is the address of this building? Thanks again!

We are at he mercy of the information that is out there.... multiple websites state 1958 as the opening date... however that is when the name change occurred to Southern Medical Center. It could have been St. Mary's before that point and that is most likely the best explanation. I am not a native of the area, so I lack the historical facts one would have growing up around there. I hope that you can actually get the answer you are looking for at some point! thanks for the comment John! - scipro team.

I also saw a comment below (David Henhaw's) that read he was born there in 1954 - so our assumption might be right.

@@scipro707 Thank-you for taking the time to answer my question. If the name changed to Southern Medical Center in 1958 then that explains things. My parents moved to California in 1955 so they probably didn't even know about the name change.

We probably passed by the nursery in that video! I figured it was located on the top floor where all the small windows were at. Thanks for sharing!

In the beginning they said it opened in 1958. Were they wrong? My dad was born in 1946 in Cairo, so I wonder if it was here or an earlier hospital that this replaced. I'm positive my grandma was brought here in 1975 when she died. Whether she died in the hospital or was already gone when the ambulance arrived to help her, I don't know.

When you guys explore did you see a dead dog on the first floor. Me and my group saw one in the building pretty mumified.

Great video Scipro! Good to see that you guys are back to basics. The 3 of you dudes make really good videos. I really like the parts that you added where you talk about some of the stuff that you guys are seeing. Hey did you ever think about just calling yourselves Scipro instead of the really long name that you have right now? Mabey just shorten it to SCIPRO URBEX or SCIPRO X. It might be a good way to make it easier to search for you guys if you have a catchier name. Hey keep up the good work guys!

Hey Randy... I think, for now, we will keep it the way it is, but it is interesting that you mentioned that. Jamie and I have been talking about changing the name just this weekend. (spitting that out at the start of videos results in a lot of bloopers). However, if someone was curious, they can just type in SCIPRO in the youtube search, it does show our channel as the first hit & our videos afterwards (without the paranormal and urban exploration). The acronym SCIPRO is kind of redundant, then saying paranormal & Urban Exploration, seeing that it stands for south central Indiana PARANORMAL research organization... we might have evolved to including the Urbex Stuff but we came from the paranormal. Its that internal fight in moving away from one or the other - we like the urban explores because we can go in, film and then leave... we cant really do that with paranormal videos and they take 4x's as long to edit. Name change may be in the future though. Again, thanks for the idea/recommendation. Thanks! Mike
