VW Mk6 GTI Crankshaft Position Sensor

  • This is a 2010 Volkswagen Golf GTI 6-speed. I was having issues with my car bucking after reaching normal temp at around 4000rpm in 1st and 2nd gear as well as 3000rpm in 3rd-6th gear. I purchased a new intake manifold and did a thorough valve cleaning thinking it would help but the problem persisted. (The gas mileage and rough idle during cold starts went away though. When I cleaned the valves I also removed and cleaned the Intake Air Temp sensor. Before doing all the cleaning, the car would start just fine and then fluctuate the RPM's anywhere from 850-1200 or so during cold starts. And I could hear my cold air intake sucking in huge amounts of air sporadically. After about 30 seconds it would rest back to normal.) Forums have listed the crankshaft position sensor (cps) as a possible source for bucking troubles similar to mine. You’ll need to remove the throttle body piping and some other piping shown in the video to get to the sensor. Purchasing a new sensor tomorrow morning and I’ll update with results as to whether it fixed my issues! (Sometimes called Crank Speed Sensor/Engine Speed Sensor).
    !!UPDATE!! The new sensor seems to have eliminated my problem! Like I wrote earlier, I cleaned all sorts of other things during the process but I'm confident that replacing the sensor was my issue. After this video, I needed to use the car so I cleaned the sensor up and put it back in the car to see if a cleaning would suffice. This caused it to have a very short misfire/buck right at about 2000 RPM in all gears. So I do think that shifting/dirtying that sensor plays a large role on engine behavior (Obviously, as that's kind of what it's for). But if you were wondering about replacing it, DO IT! It's cheap!

    Yea that's kind of the problem I'm having now. It stalls after driving a while and have to wait for it to cools down and bogs around 3k rpms as well already changed the air filter, new manifold, new coils and spark plugs, carbon cleaned, new MAF sensor and now the air temp sensor. Next is the fuel filter and probably this next.

    Hi there!
    Nice video.
    I own a Leon with the BZB engine almost identical in looks and facing the same symptoms.
    I cannot rev more than 3.000 rpm and got a P0321 fault code on torque plus.
    Going to change the crank position sensor also.

    Thanks for the vid deff helpful, sucks my sensor housing broke off when I pulled the sensor out… now the housing is sick in the block 🙃 few hours now trying to pry it out. But when it sits flush on the block only thing to do is find something I can fit in the housing and expand it to actually get any type of grip on it. Any ideas or tips?

      Fortunately for me this didn't happen lol I think there's another comment in here somewhere where the same thing happened and the guy said he used a pick tool (harbor freight has them super cheap) and a small pair of needle nose. If that didn't work, I'd probably try to find a small file tool (also harbor freight) and file two slits on the edges that would hopefully make it possible to squeeze the housing out

      Sorry man! I had my UA-cam linked to my other account for a while and didn’t see the notification. This is a 2.0 Turbo TSI. The sensor itself just sits in the bore and is held in place by a bolt immediately above it. It will feel loose until tightened all the way

    Might be a stupid comment/question but here goes... when I pulled that sensor our it didn't have the black body intact it looked like it broke off like the casing broke but sensor is still there, is that why my new sensor doesn't fit?

    • @mychal5057
      @mychal5057  2 роки тому

      Hey man sorry for the late response. I'd say it's definitely a possibility if it broke apart. I know it's not a great angle but you might be able to get one of those cheap 'telescopic mirror's from AutoZone and kinda angle it down there with a light to see if you can see the old plastic shell of the last one stuck in the hole.
      And if you DO see it, I'd proceed very very carefully. Maybe try to get one of those little 'picks' you can also get at AutoZone. They have some with 90 degree bends at the end and you'd probably be able to yank the old plastic out

    How did you disconnect the electrical connector?

    • @mychal5057
      @mychal5057  2 роки тому

      The connector I believe is a standard pin connector so just has a push/pull tab. If you Google "Mk6 GTI crankshaft sensor harness" it should be the first thing that pops up.
      If you have a thin pick or even a tiny screwdriver, you should be able to angle it to pull the tab up while simultaneously pulling on the harness itself.
      I honestly can't remember if it was a push tab or a pull tab, it's been a long while

      Well you won’t love the reply...
      I’ve never had the p0016 personally but I’ve seen a few cases online. On the incredibly lucky side: It’s either the camshaft sensor or Crankshaft sensor having an error. If you’ve already replaced the camshaft sensor, I’d replace the crank sensor too if you can spare the $40. On the incredibly unlucky side: That code is linked to being one of the signs that the timing tensioner has crapped out on you. Are you in the same boat as me? You’re over the TSB mileage? I’m honestly waiting for mine to go out any day now. And I have to make a 1,200 mile drive next week and I’m on the stock tensioner and belts at 142,000
