Steve Hackett - Eleventh Earl of Mar (Genesis Revisited: Live At Hammersmith)

  • Опубліковано 24 лип 2019
  • The song concerns the Jacobite rebellion of 1715. The Earl of Mar, John Erskine, led the rebel forces (in the name of the Great Pretender), but was an incompetent general, who threw away all strategic advantage by encamping around Perth for a week giving the opposing Royal forces time to get organised.
    My pet gripe is that it was the SIXTH Earl of Mar, not the eleventh who was responsible! Apart from that the song is pretty accurate and sarcastic about our friend the Earl and his master
    ***
    "One of the reasons we have so many different elements in one song, let alone an album, is that if the listener doesn't respond to one thing, he probably will to another thing. If you're going to lose them there, you'll catch them somewhere else.
    There's another song in the middle of it as well which was intended to go somewhere completely different. It was a song by itself. I was working on the idea of wind, if you like. I had a title `The House and Four Winds' which I wanted to do as a whole kind of thing and that's what remains of it.”
    ~Steve Hackett interview with New Musical Express in December 1976

    Thank you for sharing this performance. It makes me sad that the younger generations have no idea what music can like, but I am optimistic that one young person will watch this, have the spark ignited and make some beautiful music of their own.

    The great thing about Steve's whole "Revisited' project is that it keeps older Genesis music alive. And when revisiting this music - using todays equipment - Steve is able to be creative about it and to remain faithfull to the original. All at the same time! This is art in itself.

    One can only dream of how Genesis would have evolved over the years had Steve Hackett not left the band. Probably not as much commercial success. Simply an outstanding musician.

      Some bands have ONE songwriter, Genesis had 5. There was little room to keep everyone happy and we were much much better off as the band split and flourished in it's many forms whether solo or down to the three writers of Genesis.

    • @lemsip207
      @lemsip207 6 місяців тому +1

      @Vince-lq3ve The 80s also changed Genesis as well Peter and Steve leaving. Chart music was very different in the 80s from the 70s following the success of the disco, punk, and new wave genres. They had to adapt to changing musical tastes, demographics and advances in music and recording technology or die. People didn't stop buying records at the age of 20 or even 30.
      Early fans of rock and roll and 60s pop were entering their 40s and still wanted to buy music. The birth rate had started to fall from 1965 so there were fewer teenagers as the decade wore on but more people in their 20s and 30s who were born in the baby boom years.

    I really enjoyed this. The music is spot on, which with any Genesis song, you want to hear it like it is on the album. My only wish, although he does a good job, I miss the voice and wish it was mor like Phil.. Again Nad Does a nice job with it, even acting out what Peter might do, but still something just missing. Steve should contact that guy from The Farm. If you really want to hear Phil again, check them out here on UA-cam, just search the Farm Genesis and should find it. Close your eyes and you think Phil is singing.
