For my maps, I made a base "starter" map that outlines the borders of all 81 tiles. I used the sand brush to mark the border lines. Then colored the inner 25 w/one of the resource brushes (don't use fertile or it will erase the sand), then the center tile w/a different resource. That way I could keep myself aware of where I am on the map in relation to what I've previously sketched on paper. When I've gotten to the point I'm ready to put in resources, then I erase the previous "coloring" & borders.
Thanks! This is off to a great start. I'm looking forward to the rest. My first map is far from done yet, so there is still a lot of time to include all the lessons you will learn me here :D.
*from the chat for Mooks A recent map had one outside highway and one rail, but had potential for a huge population, which might overload that single connection. A smaller island map might be okay with just one.
Thanks, BonBon. You've inspired me to make a connecting map to my current map based on Dartmoor, Devon. I'm going for a coastal map, so this is very informative and useful. Looking forward to the next video.
I'm close to finally finishing the first map I feel like sharing. I've made several for my own amusement, but none worthy of the workshop. Where I struggle is with the more "artsy" bits. How, for example, to create believable forests instead of simply spamming trees across the map or where to place the various resources. I'm very analytical by nature. So I excel at laying out networks. I also enjoy that part enough that I completely redo the networks on every map I get from the workshop. I almost enjoy that more than I enjoy building my own cities.
Thanks for the info! For the heightmaps, my import heightmap button in the Map Editor doesn't work, so if you know anything about that, please let me know!
@@pfeilspitze not exactly, whenever I import a heightmap for some reason I get very little variation of the heights even though there may be a mountain on there
Ah yes. This first video in the series was more about design basics, with technical details to follow in later videos, so as not to overload the viewer with information. Sadly, by the 4th video in the series views had dropped off enough as to make continued episodes more trouble than they were worth. But there are three more in the series to watch.

Your videos are consistently useful and enjoyable. And for that, I thank you "Very, Very Much!" :)
Ooo I’m very excited to see this when I wake up in the morning as I have been trying to create a map the past week or 2
Don't get to too excited, this is just episode one of ten. But we have to start somewhere :-)
No worries. I have been trying to create a map the last 2 years. Never satisfied though 😁
@@BonBonB that’s alright, I will be waiting lol, although this was helpful to remember I should add more through my map lol
Perfect start to the series Bon, looking forward to the next one.

Yeah okay I'm sorry I think I had lost what you're talking about in that first video I think I wasn't paying attention a little bit but it's very good
This is awesome, can you talk through using a height map? I often struggle after the import of the map because often you can't see the lines
There's a mod that can turn the topo lines on in any screen, if that's what you mean?

That is a very good episode except for it wasn't really informative of how to do it so thank you anyways and I hope your second video is better
