  • When your painting is off, it is always one of the following reasons: perhaps your drawing is off, are your values correct, have you used hard and soft edges appropriately, are your temperatures correct? In this short dog time lapse tutorial video, I discuss the importance of getting these 4 fundamentals correct and give you tips how get them right the first time around.
My palette used in this video is: yellow ochre, titanium white, cadmium red, ivory black, alizarin crimson and cadmium yellow.

Great tips, thank you. Achieving no loss of accuracy from the drawing to the painting is what I am struggling with. All your videos are excellent, and I am learning useful information from them. I appreciate you sharing your knowledge and I love your paintings.

I do have a video that helps with this issue but cannot remember which one it is. If you draw your object on your canvas prior to painting. Lay a piece of cellophane over it and use a permanent marker to draw it on the cellophane. You can then put this cellophane against your image at various points in the painting process to check your drawing is correct. Hope this helps. 😀
