      I think Worsley is awesome, but having grown up around academics... this video appearance is also a performance, and gives us virtually zero insight into what she might be like as a friend, colleague or relative. I'll bet she's great, but youtube is not real life. 😊

      I'm just a couple of years older than you. In the US, History is one of those courses you HAVE to pass in order to graduate from high school (English is the other).
      History was one of my worst subjects. I'm not good remembering facts, and names, and such. But what makes it interesting are the personalities...what makes these people "tick"...is much more interesting. Who they were married to, and how many kids they had. Scandalous affairs...
      I like the fact that Lucy brings the characters, and the history of the British to life.
      I wish there was someone like her that can do the same for American history....which can be SO boring. I mean how many times can you get drilled into your head about the American Revolution, and the Civil War, and how Columbus was supposed to discover America (but ended up in the West Indies), and the Pilgrims and the first Thanksgiving!

      There are a lot of wonderful English, Scottish and British history books. Also wonderful biographies of " Royals". Read! It's wonderful! However, read from different sources. What are the author's agendas. (if any)

    • @paigetomkinson1137
      @paigetomkinson1137 2 роки тому +1

      @@robert-pj3bc I can appreciate that, Robert, truly. I have read books of History, too. The problem for me, and I think what Catherine was getting at, is that History leaves so much out. Or used to, anyway. Things like "What did the room look like where they conferred over the treaty? Was it light-filled or dark? What did the curtains and walls look like? Were the floors bare or carpeted?" Or, "How was the King (Queen, princess, prince, prime minister, general, banker, petitioner, etc.) dressed, and what did they look like? Or, "What food and drink was served in between the rounds of discussion?" Perhaps it's just a failing of History books in the United States, but I don't think so.
      Those kinds of "extras" are really important in building a full understanding of whatever it is one is reading about, or watching. This is one reason I'm passionate about documentaries like Lucy Worsley's. History can be like a black and white drawing; these kinds of documentaries, and even (well done) historical drama, brings in the crayons and adds the color, the Real Life elements. I believe in reading the history itself, but definitely augmenting with these kinds of details that the history books often leave out. When I was in school, they taught us the History, but left all the rest out. I hated History then. Now, I love it, because I can see and feel, and sometimes even smell & taste, the history going on, thanks to the books and shows that add in all the glorious colors.

    Yes!! Before she said which of Henry VIII's six wives she most admired, I thought "Mine is Katherine of Aragon." It is arguable that many of Henry's acts that were (and are) considered tyrannical were carried out precisely because Katherine of Aragon was so astute and strategic about her position not just as King Henry's wife, but as a mother, as a dynast, as a representative of the interests she brought with her to England. She could not simply abandon all this at Henry's command without harm both to England and her family. She understood her position far better than Henry or Wolsey or Cromwell did, or even the Pope, for that matter. A remarkable woman.

    My favorite thing about Dr. Lucy Worsley: I learned - from an interview with her somewhere on UA-cam - that she has a Giant Tongue, which prevents her from being able to pronounce her "Rs." She went to a speech therapist, learned how to finesse her speech impediment, and has gone on to become a premier storyteller of English and British history. And she makes it look So Easy!

      @Terri_MacKay 4 роки тому +5

      My favourite wife is Anne of Cleves, and, the reason is the way that Lucy presented her. She was a survivor. She learned how to bend and adapt to her situation. She easily gave Henry the divorce he wanted, and was greatly rewarded for that compliance. She was given money, gifts, a number of homes, a pension...and was considered the "King's beloved sister" and was given an honoured place in his court.

I wish when I was in college I had not been talked out of a history career. I am now directing the preschool where I have taught for over a decade. Still an intellectual challenge, but very different from teaching history. I love Lucy's enthusiasm! When I am not at work, I am voraciously reading history, including all of Lucy's work. This was a great interview! The interviewer let Lucy answer the questions and didn't constantly interrupt her. I have seen the first two episodes, and they are brilliant. Lucy has a gift for story telling, and helps teach us the "truth" of what history really is. If you haven't seen her other specials, I highly recommend watching them. Most of them can be seen on youtube.

    I really enjoyed watching this fascinating look at British history. I’ve been looking for something to research, read and enjoy, British history for me it is then! I can’t wait to find more historical videos on UA-cam from Lucy Worsley. This lady is amazing at explaining historical events. 😁

    I've been addicted to Lucy Worsley's docuseries for the last couple of years! I adore her!
    As an aside, I'm in total agreement: Catherine of Aragon was without a doubt the ONLY choice for "favorite" of Henry VIII's wives. She put in the time, effort, was truly "royal" in the most literal sense. The others were usurpers, manipulative narcissists, or sad political pawns.

    Lucy is so much fun. I love all her documentaries. I chuckled at her discussion of mantuas. It reminded me of an excerpt that Janet Arnold included in Patterns of Fashion 1 where a mantua maker was complaining about her clients demanding she make their mantuas do things that weren't physically possible. It makes us laugh now but it does say something not only about the excess but also the creativity of the era. In modern times it would be like someone demanding a couture house make a gown that enables them to fly. "What do you mean you can't make it fly! I want to fly so do it!"

    Dr. Worsley is one of my heros. So many ancient buildings in Britain, than in the US. Dr.Worsley is so in love with her subject, and it helps us to love history too. I like the way she teaches history. 🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊💜💜💜🕊🕊🕊🕊💚💚💚🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊💜💜💜🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊💚💚💚🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊💜💜💜🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊🕊💚💚💚🕊
