    One of the few Ireland travel vlogs I have watched to the end. I am from Dublin, I lived in Galway and I have family in Kerry and Cork, so I know the areas you visited well. Big respect for not only solo travel but for using public transport and not being the typical American tourist. Also a big THANK YOU for NOT using the stereotype Irish folk music, thats really what kept me watching.

    • @michealjones9863

      Irish folk music isn’t a stereotype it’s a beautiful thing .

      I was thinking the exact same thing when I heard a song with Spanish lyrics start playing mid video. I love watching videos of people enjoying our beautiful country and it really irks me when they put in some over the top, copyright free “Irish” music!

    • @zakmartin
      @zakmartin 2 місяці тому +4

      Irish music is characteristic, not stereotypical of Ireland. The music of a country is inspired by the land, the atmosphere, the people, the history and traditions, and the overall spirit of the place. It's the *sound* of the country. If you have a problem with "stereotypical" representations of Ireland, presumably you also have a problem with filming "stereotypical" Irish scenery, green fields, country roads, ancient castles, sandy beaches, Georgian architecture, and of course "stereotypical" Irish people.

    • @badpinktink100
      @badpinktink100 2 місяці тому +4

      @@zakmartin Oh lighten up. Modern Ireland is far more than the Darby O'Gill version pushed by Irish Tourism to American tourists. I did competitive Irish dancing as a child and teenager in Dublin, so I am well aware of what Irish music is. I was surrounded by Irish music growing up, so now as an adult, its very refreshing to see a video like this,

    • @thoins
      @thoins 2 місяці тому +2

      @@zakmartin I love our cultures, traditions and music, but when it’s an American putting copyright free garbage from a website into their videos, it almost feels offensive…

    Hey Kat, it was so nice to see my country and my university through your eyes... you made all those places so familiar to me feel fresh! Next time you're back, I would recommend exploring the northern half of the country too. It's almost always overlooked by tourists but it's every bit as special as the well-beaten track of the south. Take the train from Dublin to Westport, head up to counties Sligo and Donegal, cross the border to Derry, wind your way along the Causeway Coast to Belfast and then take the train back down to Dublin again.

    • @katsfieldnotes
      @katsfieldnotes  2 місяці тому +2

      I really appreciate this recommendation, thank you! Donegal and Sligo are two places that I had on my list for this trip but just couldn't swing. Really eager to make my way up there! Also sending all the Trinity love haha

    Love your video!
    We are a tiny nation. Barely 6 million people but have contributed four Nobel literature laureates and six Booker prize winners with some of the greatest names in literature. and Dublin home to a booming network of magazines, publishers, bookshops, festivals and decently funded and hugely popular free libraries. But Ireland’s outsize output of brilliant writing is less of a surprise to the people who live here. Our history of joy in storytelling goes deep in ancient history. Our history of oppression under British rule followed by grim religion-based control from 1922 until our second, profound liberation that started in the late 90s has produced an outpouring of personal and social expression through the written word. Voices that were suppressed or silenced pour out through the written word and revel in the sheer joys of language, both in the English language that was imposed on us and in our native Irish.
    And it's so nice to see people like yourself experience and enjoy this when you come here. Hope you return soon and treat us to another video.

    Wow..This was a great perspective on Ireland and I guess that comes from your literary interest. It's so different to other travel vlogs I've seen from tourists. Travelling like a local and being surprised by a regular bus journey between towns is so nice and authentic. I love that your experience of the landscapes made you think about the creation of them. Thank you for your interest and appreciation of our little country. I feel proud and happy. Thank you. You've even piqued my interested in irish literature 😊

      Omg hi! I'm so happy you're here! And haha my favorite thing to do is to act on all my seemingly silly whims. Feels like a protest to the seriousness of life. I definitely vote you take a literary trip! It's such an intimate little delight! I just saw someone who went to Ischia after reading the Ferrante books, so there are a lot of us out there humoring the bookish whims!

    You seem to have got the essence of Ireland - story telling is part of every aspect of Irish life. Every day conversations outside of Ireland are often less engaging.
    Bravo for the solo traveling and taking public transport - and yes the late sunsets are disconcerting, they really mess with perception of time.

    Lovely video. Glad you enjoyed your trip.
    18:47 The little beach at the bottom of the cliff was used in the film “Ryan’s Daughter” starring Robert Mitchum, Sarah Miles and John Mills. From the director of “Lawrence of Arabia”.
    If you’re a fan of “Normal People” you should consider visiting the north west of Ireland next time. Sligo (where “Normal People” was filmed) was the home of WB Yeats. John McGahern was from the neighbouring county, Leitrim. The scenery is also fantastic. Connemara, into Mayo and Achill Island (one of the locations for “the Banshees of Inisheeran”, into Sligo and on to Donegal. All beautiful.

    I think I just spotted @Sabbatical at @7.05!? He was over here short time ago. I'm from Clare myself you captured some nice footage. I'm heading down to Killarney tomorrow that and West Cork are probably the nicest spots IMO. If you're back in Dublin next time the Secret Book Store and Marsh's Library might be worth a gawk.

      Also if you do come back to visit again, summer time in west cork and Kerry will always be lively! West Cork in particular is very cosmopolitan with many Europeans and Americans spending some of their summer there :) also the fact you managed to master our public transport systems is impressive, many Irish people struggle with that. Some more places to go would be Belfast, get to know a little bit more about this islands history, it’s a beautiful city, the people are also lovely and visiting the causeway coast nearby is majestic and steeped in mythology too.

      Really nice vid. You really got to experience a lot in the short time u had. West cork is stunning and it's always cool to go to small towns and be pleasantly surprised by really lovely community events/festivals. So many wonderful bookshops. If you ever return, check out the winding stair bookshop in Dublin and the book centre in Waterford. Highly recommend reading anything by Sebastian Barry or colm tóibín. Have a good one.@@katsfieldnotes

    I saw in one of your comments here that you've already booked your next trip to the wee slice of paradise we call Ireland. (It's the windy/rainy slice, but you can't have everything!)
    I'm sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but I'm afraid you're doomed!
    You might as well start selling your stuff in America now to save yourself the bother later. 🤣
    I personally know three people (one German, one Dutch, one Tunisian/French) who came on holiday to Ireland and just.. never left.
    Well technically they did leave - they went back home for just long enough to tidy up their affairs before moving permanently to Ireland.
    Sorry about that.
    All that's left now is to pick a county. West Cork looks like it suits you.🤣
    PS: Great vlog - you captured the essence of Ireland in 24 minutes. 👍

      This made me giggle! I absolutely see why so many people up and opt for the emerald isle. I definitely felt separation anxiety as I was leaving and miss it dearly on the daily, so you might be right 😂 A very good problem to have, to miss such a lovely place and be able to return (likely many times over!)
