Why I am fitting an Electric Start to my Triumph Bonneville T140v 1977
Some Exerts from My original diary’s in 2018
Its no good kidding myself have severe arthritis in my knees hips back and shoulders and using the kick start is becoming not only more difficult to do but also more painful for me to do.
I can still use the kick start but logically I can rapidly see a point coming in the next few years when I won’t be able to fire her up any more.
I have no intention of giving up on riding my Triumph Bonneville so I need to find a solution.
I am originally a qualified Scientific Instrument Maker by Trade and also worked on the shop floor as a maintenance engineer for too many years to remember before moving into management.
So instead of giving up, I wondered I can use my old expertise and skills as an engineer to help me continue to maintain and ride my motorcycle.
The Bonneville was fitted with an electric start in the early 80s with the ES the TX and the TSX versions.
That original Meriden/Harris electric start was sadly unreliable, and was mostly removed by the owners, and the bikes put back to standard. There are still a few exceptions out there but generally this was the case, so I cannot just fit one of those but maybe I can reengineer and find a solution with something like it.
So I need to investigate where practical all of the reported failure reasons of the Meriden and Harris Electric starters to see if I could find a reliable solution.
Eventually I decided on buying a Kit from LP Williams as I liked there idea about having the sprag resolving around the Intermediate shaft rather than the shaft and sprag being one part and the whole thing revolving in the crankcase housing-
Watch the video of me installing the basic kit it along with some other modifications to the electrics to see what I discover and work out a way to make it all reliable.
Hope you enjoy my video on the project, after I have finished the final upgrade testing when the bike has done 5000 miles I will update you.
The new clutch I have designed will be made available to you after testing is completed if you have need of one but I need to know if there is any demand first so just leave me a message and ill get back to you.
Your enquiry will not be published.
Many thanks to Dave Griffis for the great day I had with him and for doing the hardness testing for me.
Special thanks to Andy at Pazon for re-programming my Pazon Altaire E Ignition with coil energise delay, and Phil at LP Williams for supplying the basic kit and replacement parts used on this project.

Thank you Chris, this one I've had about 10 years, and have had four other Bonnies over the last 50 odd riding years plus a myriad of other bikes including Norton Honda Suzuki BSA and one Harley but only for about 6 weeks lol.

Great video really appreciate the total lack of background music but suggest buy a clip on microphone. The back to camera stuff was inaudible. You must remember you're talking to 'us' not mumbling to yourself :-)
