  • How to use the Locus Map Pro app for Android smartphone to plan routes with elevation profiles when offline.
I've used this app for a few years now and helped several other tourers to set it up for offline navigation. There are a few steps to go through, which can be a bit intimidating at first, but once it's set up it's surpisingly easy to use Locus Pro to navigate and plan routes completely offline.
NB - I don't talk about it in the video, but Locus also can be used to record your route as you travel in offline mode, and later export to e.g. Strava etc, if that's your thing.
    Steps in the video:
1.Install the Locus Pro app 01:12
    2. Download free OSM maps from OpenAndroMap.org
(optional - change Locus offline map directory)
    3. Install BRouter offline navigation plug-in app
    4. Download BRouter navigation tiles
    5. Make long 'dummy route' in RideWithGPS.com and import to Locus
    6. Update elevation data for long 'dummy route' in Locus
    7. Customisation tips
    8. Splitting and merging GPX tracks in Locus Pro

Whew, Really good. I feel as if I did the ride. Remember that there is a UA-cam settings option to make playback speed a little bit slower, for the complex part. 0.75 still sounds OK. .5 is a bit slurred.

Great explanation of how to make and edit tracks on Locus Map Pro. I have this on my Android phone, but use MapOut on the iPad (only for iOS). MapOut is not really so good for turn-by-turn directions, but it is REALLY easy to plot out a route, the maps have excellent detail and visual quality and it is very easy to fly around the world and zoom in in great detail (once you have downloaded the map tiles). I plot the routes, then save them to Google Drive, and on the phone can open them in Locus Map Pro. The advantage of this is that it is VERY easy to edit the track in MapOut (including completely re-routing, extending it or cutting it back) while on Locus this is a very difficult process. I then just quickly save the new track to Google Drive again, and replace the old version on Locus.

Thanks, Peter. Agreed it is fiddly to edit tracks once created in Locus, except for shortening.

Great tutorial IF you already know how to use Locus Maps. You move through things MUCH too quickly. You say something, then click on the app before a person has a chance to see what you're going to demonstrate.

@@SelfPropellingParticle I guess your title of "Locus Map Tutorial" had me fooled somehow.

thanks. good video. Brouter is not working for me. I cannot get locus maps to create a navigation while offline. Is there something wrong that I'm not aware of? if anyone reading this can help I would appreciate it.

Thanks Dan. Your tutorial helped me get to grips with Locus Pro. I use Strava on my computer to design a route and then export a gpx file and import it into Locus Pro on my mobile. This then enables me to use audio turn by turn navigation on the route, which is why I wanted Locus Pro.

I'm looking for how to actually follow a path created by locus pro and use it like you, to have the directions and the voice prompt, but it is not so easy! I can't find it for now

Sorry my replies to earlier comments have disappeared since I moved this YT channel to a 'brand account'. I appreciate the comments, though :)

now that locus has gone subscription, are you still using classic or have you gone to subscription, or other? I'm still using classic. As I understand it it is supposed to be supported through 2027.

Thanks Dan - A lot of well meaning people post youtube videos of greater (or lesser!) value. I appreciate your effort to be both comprehensive and clear. Your video allowed me to get a good start with Locus.

Offline adress search and offline POI search only works with Lomaps, not with OAM.
