My old school Jazz drummer experience was seeing Louie Belson play his double bass kit with Hoover High School Jazz Band in 74 or 75, grand opening of a new musical instrument store in Fresno, California in a parking lot. Three songs. Really amazing. It was through connections with Professor Lomprey at the Jazz Department at Fresno State. Believe it or not, the best Jazz program on the West Coast between 74-82. They not only took State at competitions but usually the whole West States. I grew up around that. I grew up with his son.
I appreciate the opinion that Buddy was the first great drum hero, but Buddy would be the first to acknowledge that Gene was really the first great drum hero, moving drums to the forefront. And Gene, of course, also INVENTED the modern drum setup and IMPROVED the tools of the "trade," which Buddy readily adopted. The two drum heroes loved one another.
I totally agree: in any case, Buddy was the first drumming freak of nature, many have followed (Cobham, Roach, Palmer, Bruford, Bozzio, Colaiuta, Sanchez, Portnoy, Smith, Weckl, etc) but even til this day I have not seen no other drummer with such physical capabilities as Buddy, once in a lifetime talent.

I work for Zildjian Buddy was a good friend of Armand Zildjian and he gave one of his drum kits to Armand it’s at the company in a spot dedicated to Buddy Rich it’s a amazing feeling to just stand in front of that drum set and picture the greatest drummer who ever lived sitting right there.

I got to see Buddy live when he was an old man... 1982... He absolutely shredded the drums, sweat dripping off his face... Just when you thought he was done he'd turn it up higher... Sweat running off his face .... Most incredible performance I've ever seen...
Animal from the Muppets gave Buddy a run for his money. 😆 When I was a kid I loved that drum battle. The look on Animals face when Buddy takes over, he looks like he found God. Then Animal gets pissed and thrashed his kit.
My very first exposure. My dad filled me in as it went down. Buddy's prequel to the stage was unreal
Was lucky enough to see him and his band live, met him after the show and was a real gentleman even to a 10 year old. He gave me his drumsticks but, after several moving homes they got lost. My father was in a band of 3 and the drummer really envious of me with the sticks, in a nice way..memories of that great man still with me...

As a former guitarist, I immediately noticed his "economy of motion" which gives him his speed and accuracy, much like the shredders of the 80s, 90s, and 2000s.

Awesome video again man! Speaking of drum tuning, John Bonham tunes his toms high like a jazz guy. That’s a big part of that classic old school JB sound. Those high pitched toms.
I'm 68 yr. old man and Buddy Rich was the king in those days. He held the left hand stick traditional and that give him more options in his drumming esp. his one hand rolls and then came L.Z. and John Bonham ! You're right two different drummers and two kings in their type of music!
Carson is how I first saw Buddy Rich... then my love of the Smashing Pumpkins drummer Jimmy Chamberlain made me look him up again (after I read about his influence)... Also played a couple of Buddy’s originals in Jazz “orchestra”. Played bass in two different jazz bands... in college 😂 Definitely no future in that outside of big city Vegas-type shows. We always played a club called Neons in Richmond, VA. Big Band was a different beast. Sadly, the only experience I had playing bass in that realm was a brutal 5 hour set at a community/county dance in south PA. It took a full 1/5 of vodka to keep me and the two alternating drummers engaged that night. I swore off big band after that, but have nothing but respect for the guys who can hang for those ridiculously long gigs.

Nice to hear someone recognize Buddy’s independence. Everyone overlooks that for some unfathomable reason.
Its usually mediocre and or drummers that don't have a great ear who dont notice that part
Buddy started gigging in his parents’ vaudeville act, playing 250 one nighters a in 1919 at the age of 2. There’s your practice. He was billed as Baby Traps the Drum Wonder. His natural ability was enhanced by the exposure to all of the great show drummers on the circuit. If you find the audio from the vitaphone short he recorded at age 12.. well, he already sounded like Buddy Rich. His final recording, done 7-8 weeks before his last gig is astoundingly good. (Just in Time, available from Amazon ..Get the 2 disc version or miss out on one of the greatest solos he ever recorded). I should point out that Buddy tended to get over-excited to be on Carson. Check out these concert videos here on youtube to see the amazing level of relaxation he normally exhibited behind the kit and his effortless command of the music.. Most of Buddy’s sidemen adored the guy and he was always tthere for them, too. (As long as they always played like their pants were on fire 😜). You need to know that. And yes.. there is still jazz out there, but we need new blood for sure.

I've seen many of the world's greatest drummers, and was blessed to have met several, including Buddy Rich, Alan Dawson, Jojo Mayer, Vinnie Colaiuta, et al. And though I have seen the great Zakir Hussain in concert 1/2 dozen times, never met him.
The main point of Buddy Rich is the same with Zakir Hussain (and others in that rarified class of musician): Their superlative technique always serves the music, not the other way around. When the musician completely bypasses your intellect and affects you on a completely visceral level -- that's how you know you are experiencing and witnessing greatness.
Here in Newfoundland, Canada there's an amazing jazz band called Ouroboros that has an incredible young drummer. Not to mention that the band of five is four saxophone players covering all else. Lucky enough to catch them live in the summer and truly was surprised by how good the show was.

Neil Peart did a tribute show to Buddy. Nevermind the solos, Peart spoke of his fantastic playing. Was high, in my opinion was Peart's strong point as well. A solo is one thing, a really amazing drummer drives the show.

I remember seeing an Ed Shaughnessy/Buddy Rich "Drum Battle" and Ed did Buddy's "Stick Trick" with him sat there near by. Great moment.
Ed was actually amazing in that battle, the closest any drummer has given Buddy a challenge, of course by the end Buddy just slayed lol

I hadn't thought much about the tom pitches until you mentioned it here. I thought maybe it was either an individual preference or maybe something more common to that genre. Thinking about it now, it occurs to me that with mics of that era combined with old school PA/mixer gear you might need to tune differently. These days, the digital mixer I use has a 36 band GEQ for each input rather than the old analog boards back then that likely only had Hi-Mid-Low pots. It's way easier to make certain instruments stand out in the mix now with the right boosts/cuts.

Good show. The thing with big bands u need a good drummer to drive them and he did just that LOL. LIke ur commentary. Just an old jazz, saloon singer who has worked with big bands.
Need to hear that lunch with Ed S, story. He was phenomenal as well. I saw buddy twice. Once in a dinner theatre setting with my mom, & then with Frank Sinatra as his drummer (!!), also with my mom. That was in an arena setting in 1982, where frank opened the arena as its first act (Worcester, MA).

I'm not sure anyone ever captured what BR's kit really sounded like, especially the kick. Pity, I'd have liked to hear his mic'd up all the way.
You might have to revisit Buddy (maybe I missed it?). What I enjoy about your channel is how you discuss technique and how it translates into an effect. The lay person hears the effect, but you have a way of explaining how some element of drumming, whether flash, licks, rudiments like paradiddles, or double strokes, or whatever, translates into creating a cool effect in a piece. That's really the art of drumming and music appreciation. You explain how Buddy is starting with the basic big band rhythm (syncopated ride patterns with high hat on the 2s and 4s) and how he's using tuning here to cut through an orchestra, but you don't get that close to his techniques and how he's deftly stringing together these rudiments, so smoothly. I would be interested in hearing you explain what all he's holding together when you say he has amazing independence. I can parse that he's keeping rhythm with his left foot and right hand, but then he responds to at least two melody lines between the horns and the saxophones (and probably completely improvised) with his left hand and right foot. Then he adds his own rhythms and melodies to complement and hold together those lines. You are right; it really is a bit of a lost art that the rock and (egads!) pop listeners have no vocabulary to begin to understand.

Where does the number 30 come from when talking about a big jazz band size. Buddy's bands were 15 members maybe 16 if he had a guitar ( he didn't use one very often, more early bands not later ).And yes West Side Story was the most well known tune, I was at a concert where he played both WSS and Chanel One in the same show ( I was in heaven ).
It's just a random exaggeration number I said in the heat of the moment to just emphasize how many more people are in a big band compared to say a rock band.

He gets such power with his left hand in traditional, it’s kinda nuts, maybe it’s that change of grip slightly. And yeah man, I practice that lick too and have been before I just recently started getting into like really studying the craft more and refreshing my ability to read music and improve it and learn exactly what I’m playing and not just go off of groove and feel, though I think playing without a metronome and only to your own feel is important sometimes to generate your own proper count that you could have in your head just in case your in ears go out or you play a gig that doesn’t use a metronome, etc.

Natural born talent. Anybody with due practice can be a good drummer, but only those exceptionally talented can achieve the highest echelons. Buddy was the very top, even now, no kidding, just look at his physical prowess, unmatched.

Is this the kind of music that they used to have on TV shows? What has happened to TV?
It's funny that jazz essentially started as dance music and yet it has become almost more academic than classical. You'll see a millions guys out there with their jazz degrees who can play Coltrane solos note for note on whatever instrument and modulate 500 times in one song, but they couldn't make your booty shake if their lives depended on it.

Personally, I don't care about his personality, only his musicianship and Buddy kicked and drove the band unlike any other drummer. Superior skills, superior ears, superior phrasing equals the most tasteful musical expression.

@Junkdrummer TV just subscribed to your channel, could You review the "Brann Dailor (Mastodon) - Crack the Skye" video. It's a Drum Camera view video on UA-cam, it's a MEINL Cymbals channel video. It's one of My favorite songs, it's super hard to play & sing while playing. The song is about Brann's sister who took her own life, I don't know how he play's it, very emotional, they rarely play it live anymore. Thanks Man

Jazz is still around but here in the America.Its not like the old days when it was main music here. Sadly it's not the top music genre's anymore .Today there too many musical genre's to choose from.This is young people music now.Thats the trend most young people consider Jazz music for the old heads.Young people will listen to music as long as they can relate to it be it Hop Hop,Comptempary Soul and Pop music and they out number old heads when it comes to down loading music.Jazz requires a taste for it. And there's still jazz lovers like myself out there but sadly we're dying out or we are in the minority.Young people is the trend and its making the biggest money.
Maybe his comment about "never practicing" is another way of saying that he never feels that drumming is work to him, because maybe admitting he practice would mean that it's a job and not a joy like the saying "Ive never worked a day in my life"
The only thing he practiced was Karate. He might've done little things, like telephone books under the arms for a jam session for endurance purposes. But he was reallly a one off. Just thinking about how far he went without practice is mindnumbing. I think it made him impatient though. Things came easily for him and not others. He could learn a piece by listening to it once, not many people can really do that. So I think it made him expect more from others.

Buddy was a better drummer than most. Try playing these sets with the same "type" drum kit. That goes for John Bonham as well.
Buddy Rich is ONE of the best drummers, but there is always always always someone better. I can tell you he lied his A$$ off if he said he never practiced. I think some of his playing was over peoples head, even drummers alike. There is point where your brain cannot decipher notes at that speed. ------>IMO
