  • In this video, Fox restores an old Stanley 9 1/4 Block Plane.
    This was a flea market bargain!

    Another great restoration! I also love the black and gold new look. Awesome job, Fox! 😀

    Nice job! I don't remember if my father had any planes in his workshop area. There certainly weren't any mounted on his tool wall.
    When I moved I had a friend come over and dismantle it. It's now proudly displayed in a corner of my attached garage. Some of his tools are still in place on it.

    Nice video! I just bought one of these from a flea market and needed to know how it goes back together as far as flattening the sole, I'm told you should only flatten with the blade installed (and pulled back) because the shape changes when the blade is clamped. There may be a hollow otherwise.

      Thank you!
      In my experience, the thing about flattening the sole with the plane assembled is a myth. It may be true on extremely flimsy planes, but these heavy cast iron ones don't flex to the extent of making a difference whether the plane is assembled or not. 👍

    Hi, I also feel you do not need to make the sole completely flat. All the hand plane I have restored work just fine. I also used detergent and salt to remove the rush leaving in the solution a couple of days. The rust was easy to clean off. Next time us wax candles to coat the clean plane a couple of hours and apply the paint. Good job you are doing if you have the money to buy these expensive products.....

    Great video! Quick question - why were you concerned about over-cleaning the knobs?

      Thank you! 😊
      The brass knobs have patina, and I like preserving original patina whenever I can. I prefer that slightly aged look instead of the shiny brand-new look.

    I accidently hit the thumbs down button and changed it to thumbs up. I got a notification that the video creator would be notified so just wanted to tell you it was a mistake in case it shows up. Great job restoring a beautiful old plane. Love it!

      I never heard of UA-cam bothering to notify us when someone clicks the thumbs-down button, but thanks for letting me know! 👍❤️

    Can you share what type of sharpener you are using?

    • @SculptyWorks
      @SculptyWorks  7 місяців тому

      It's a Work Sharp 3000. It's pretty handy but you need to adjust to use your own sandpaper because buying the manufacturer's special stuff gets expensive fast! 😉

    What kind of paint did you use?

    • @SculptyWorks
      @SculptyWorks  Рік тому

      It's just a general use all-in-one Rust-Oleum paint+primer.

    Do you not need to paint the sides ?

    • @SculptyWorks
      @SculptyWorks  Рік тому

      You shouldn't paint the sides, because if you're going to use it against something or in a shooting board (though these are quite small for shooting boards), the paint will rub off.

    It's Japannig paint, which is baked on .

    From very cheap to worth how much now?

      I have no idea how much one of these goes for, fully restored. A brand new one is around $60 or so, I think. ...and they aren't as good as the old ones, if you ask me. 😉

    Any REPUTEABLE engine builder can tell you why the plane should be under tension when you "flatten" the sole.
