Great information, and a great video! Divination is an indispensable part of Santeria. Those who follow the traditions of Santeria rely on the advice and guidance that they receive from the Orishas, as well as from their departed ancestors to help them make decisions and work through difficult times.

Ifa divination is performed with the Opon Ifa, the Ikin Ifa and the Opele Ifa. Thank you for speaking “truth to power” and giving reverence and respect to our Yoruba belief system and practices. Ifa is not a religion in the same context as the white man's religion. Ifa predates Christianity, Islam and many other religions and belief systems. Thank you for taking the time to point out what it takes (pretty much a lifetime) to gain the knowledge to become a seasoned Babalawo. Also, Ifa priests and priestesses are predestined by Olodumare, picked by Ifa and initiated and trained from childhood. It is not possible to wake up and choose to become an Ifa priestess or priest. Nonetheless, anyone can choose to become an Ifa initiate or devotee if they feel called to the religion. What bothers me, is there seems to be a growing number of people out there spreading misinformation about the Yoruba culture and belief system. We the Yoruba, really don't mind the interest and that people are keen to embrace our culture and beliefs. The Yoruba people have always been very open and welcoming. What we ask,is for people to properly educate themselves and to respect our culture and language should they choose to embrace our belief system. Btw, the Brazilian Santeria and Cuban Lucumi are both direct derivatives/adaptations of the Ifa religion post-colonial and post-slavery eras.
