How to replace TAIL LIGHT BULB in 2008 AUDI A4 AVANT (DEALERSHIP)

- This shows how to replace a tail light, or rear light, in a 2008 Audi A4 Avant. The car's instruction manual says to take it to the dealer. The folks in the online forums say that this is so that the dealer can charge $100. That's not true. Steven's Creek Audi, in San Jose, California did this for me for free and also let me post this video. The bulbs are the same for all the tail lights and they cost about $3 each from the dealer. I couldn't find a video online showing how to do it, so I posted this video to help others.
Thank you for the very helpful video, Duncan.
My 2006 Audi A4 Avant takes three 12volt 21watt bulbs, two for the brake light and one for the driving/parking light.
I was able to swap out the burned out bulbs in less than 10 minutes.
The screw holding in the unit takes a regular thin flat blade screwdriver.
Bulbs were less than $5 for a set of two at any parts store.
Cheers, the part about wiggling it / forcing it out helped a ton tonight at 10pm. I used a small flat head to take out the screw.
Really helpful. The instruction manual on my 2006 A4 Avant did not describe how to wiggle free the two lugs that hold the light unit in place after removing the screw. After watching this video a couple of times (both removing and replacing the unit) I could see that it needs a GENTLE tap sideways. Very expensive if you tap it too hard I imagine!
All done and put back in 10 mins once I had the light unit off. I didn't bother to unplug the electric socket from the back of the light unit as I couldn't immediately see how to unsecure it. No problem with leaving it connected while taking the whole back of the unit off.
Many thanks for taking the time to post this.
Even the same colour as mine too. I liked the fact that this video wasn't one of those dragged out " HURRY UP AND GET TO THE POINT VIDEOS" . Really quick, detailed and helpful
Thank you mate! I didn’t know how to change a bulb and now i will try. Video from 13years ago.
This helped me easily change my brake light bulb during half-time of a bowl game. Only tool needed was a simple flat screwdriver.
Thanks for this.. have to go to the dmv to get it registered and had to fix
Thanks for this video! I would have never figured it out on my own. Took 2 mins to do! Thanks again
Very helpful! I used the screwdriver that came in the toolbox for the spare tire and it fit perfect.
thanks I was wondering what tool I needed? so the technician said It is a 17mm allen.
Thanks for the video dude!
Thanks, I have a similar Audi. It isn't quite the same but close enough to work it out from this. Saved me a lot of hassle and cash.
Cool very helpful, struggled to follow the manual instructions thanks for posting instruction
Thank you! Avant all day 👍
Thanks for this, a perfect video to help me out, been running with a light out for a few months now and figured I should really do something about it!
Great video! I have a Seat Exeo (basically the same car as the A4) and this is just what I needed.
Great, easy to follow video. Excellent!
Thanks you for posting! That was VERY helpful!
Thanks m8 helped me out. Whats it like living on the other side of the pond compared to the uk?
Try not to touch the bulb with bare fingers use a piece of thin foam or plastic as a barrier as natural oil from your fingers stick to the bulb & heats up when the bulb is on decreasing the life span of the bulb or at least clean your finger mark of with a clean rag after fixing !!!
Thanks for that. Apparently, the oil can weaken the seal between the glass and the fitting.
@@DuncanRiach well yes but it also heats up just the way it would in a frying pan & causes it to blow quicker !
@@stevenfrear5943 Oh, I see. So the oil on the glass heats up and cracks the glass?
Very very very very useful, to me at least as I am changing my rear break light.
Thank you!! this was very helpful!
Thanks guys very helpfull video.i was wondering from where to open up.
Just done this myself, cheers!
@PJMODOHH I have no idea. The difficult part was getting the cover off. You might want to begin the process and find out if this video helps. Just don't force anything. If you can't do it, then take it to the dealership and ask for their help. They should help you for free. Make a video while you're at it. Please post your discoveries back here.
you made that look very easy, my light assembly refusses to come out!?
ah the grommets! nice one, many thanks!
Ahhh...you don't want to touch the new bulb head. It will blow out prematurely due to the impurities on the bulb surface. He did everything well except for this.
Will same method work on 06 a4 sedan
great help
On the european models, the screw is a phillips, not a 17mm allan key. Thanks for posting though, it had me mystified
you can use head screwdriver too
Thanks mate ..I've been agonising for the last 2 hours scared in case I broke the light ..Audi really are a bunch of highway robbers ..my Audi's days are numbered ..it's been an absolute pig since the day I got it..I'm going back to Passat

tedious but easier than you would thnk!
Cheers. Handy vid.
