    Is there concern that the rubber will get eaten/deteriorated away over time by nature or chemicals? Or any concern over Teflon cracking from vertical forces?

      There's always be, it's just that this video only shows the working principle. I think the construction engineers should give the details for the maintenance procedures after the build was completed.

      Teflon is NOT the best choice. Research has shown HDPE on various materials for the bearing plate (including marble, which unfortunately is also soft and fragile) is superior to PTFE (AKA Teflon™).

    Earthquakes can also have a significant vertical component (P-waves = lateral, S-waves = vertical) which can destroy a build not yet damaged by the lateral dynamics. The S-waves travel more slowly from the hypocenter and arrive slightly later at the surface, and can typically cause "pancake collapse".
    This excellent system in the video would need to be significantly modified as to dissipate the enormous amounts of vertical energy/acceleration released during such a quake. I believe the Japanese have already developed such systems, but they are not so elegant or cost conscious as the system shown here, as far as I'm aware.

    Working principle of ‘base isolation’ is proven to work...now, refinement of materials and design towards that is the goal.

    "teflon coated"?!? One little problem with that material choice: PTFE (AKA Teflon™) cold-flows (deforms) under pressure! Using glass or other fibers to reinforce PTFE reduces pressure deformation of PTFE, but then the reinforcing fibers abrade the bearing plate, which must remain smooth for good operation. Using very thin layers of PTFE eliminates the cold-flow problem but requires frequent replacement of the bearing surfaces.
    And for everyone wondering why springs aren't used instead of the laminated rubber devices: springs allow too much vertical motion, which increases the risk of service connections (like gas lines) being broken.

    4,000 homes in Japan with base isolation systems as of 2011. Any engineers here know of the results so far? Any substantive failures? Needs to replace the laminated rubber isolators? Do the houses have some sort of skirting fabric to keep earth/dirt/water/debris from fouling the isolator sytems?

      Well i take it it's completely protected as in enclosed and waterproofed so that the water cannot get inside... it's not open air as we see here this is for demonstration how it works...
      And I'm sure thay rubber is also replaceable after an earthquake or after couple of years (as rubber degrades over time) and is maintained every couple years...
      But this sure is the best quake proofed tech so far and I don't know why investors cheap put on this tech. It should be mandatory. Probably none of the buildings wouldn't be toppled in turkey if they had this system for buildings.

      ​@@sermerlin1This is an absolutely excellent comment and I hope as many architects and engineers as possible get to read this. Especially those in Turkey, the whole of which needs to go through a mandatory rebuilt.

      @@fibonaccisrazor Surely isolators would have made a big difference but that wasn't the only issue.There were some buildings perfectly in tact while the one next to it was totally destroyed.The main problem didn't lie with the architects nor the design engineers it was mainly the builders cutting corners not using materials as specified by the engineers trying to make more profits along with the corrupt local councils and their inspectors signing off to say it meets all the criteria.The governments over the years are just as guilty for not enforcing the regulations and not penalizing corrupt officials as a deterrent.One wonders how many earthquakes needed before necessary precautions are taken.

      @@mehmettemel8725 Exactly! As you mentioned, the main problem is not the architects/engineers but the builders, other contractors and corruption on the part of administrative centers. I fear it will take even more earthquakes, or possibly just one new government, to bring about enforcement of the strict regulations necessary to ensure that all buildings are earthquake-proof. Whoever those responsible are, they now have a task so large that it will take decades to fulfil.

    How do we maintain both type of isolator supports? By that, I mean the periods for lubrication, support replacement, etc 🤔
    Just asking, hoping that maybe some construction engineers would respond 🤔

    So this teflon coating withstands the force of an entire building but I'm not supposed to use metal tools on my teflon frying pan? Something doesn't add up. Big Teflon did 9/11!

      Bruh, it's about the coating's thickness and the usage itself. Thin coating of teflon can chip easily under intense heating and aggressive scratching. Teflon is also poisonous.

    Come on, on the first test there was vertical movement involved. The second scenario with the base isolation only showed horizontal motion, that’s an unfair comparison and misinforming.

      ​@@mr_hary i do not think that this can function properly, i do not understand why the teflon is there, maybe like a brake to minimize horizontal vibrations, but there i do not see any vertical shock absorbent.
      The best Base Isolation System made until now which all humanity know is a cheap to product, simple made, low maintenance or zero maintenance, and that is a Seismic Isolation Base with Laminated Rubber and Lead Core. They can be manufactured to withstand 5 tons up to 200 tons under a single buildings pillar. Remember, a wider Isolation Base with Laminated Rubber and Lead Core is = the better are chances to withstand, and higher the Isolation Base with Laminated Rubber and Lead Core is - there will be less vibrations. For homes is enough 50 cm up to 100 cm high and 50 cm up to 100 cm width (diameter) under every cement pillar of the building. With Isolation Base with Laminated Rubber and Lead Core homes, buildings, bridges and similar are full protected. Research for yourself before you decide something. Isolation Base with Laminated Rubber and Lead Core are cheap, but once are mounted - there is no needed any maintenance. You can not mount them after you have build the house.
      How is shown on this video the system which mover horizontally around upper a teflon, i thing is worse than should be.
      Only Isolation Base with Laminated Rubber and Lead Core inside (in the center of) the rubber. Lead core will prevent the building from horizontal collapse, but the rubber will absorb the shock. Lead is soft and bends on all sides, but can not be pressed vertically. First you need to know exactly how much will weight the building before deciding which size of Isolation Base with Laminated Rubber and Lead Core you will use. Its very important.
