      Any time I feel down about something, I go on UA-cam, find the video of their performances and just absorb the awe and wonder. Bolero is probably more famous, but the compulsory dance of the bullfighter was truly awesome. I watched them live in Victoria, British Columbia, and what struck me most in their live performances was that I could not "hear" their blades on the ice, while with all the other guest skaters, there was always the noise of skate-blades on ice! T&D were truly AWESOME!

    My 11 month old son was undergoing cardiac surgery while Torvill & Dean were skating in the Olympics. They helped me keep my sanity throughout this very stressful time.
    40 years later, my son is now a 41 year old father of 4.
    T & D hold a very special place in my heart!

    It isn't just the British who will never forget that moment!! I was completely mesmerized by the perfection of that dance and the intricacy of the steps. Those 6's were so well deserved!!! I still have my VHS tape that my mother bought me for Christmas that year because she knew how much I admired you both. I have no where I can watch it, but I won't give it up, lol! Thank you for the beauty that you brought to the world. Enjoy your well deserved retirement!

    Best ice dancers in the history of the sport. They will never be matched--one of a kind.

    • @roddo1955
      @roddo1955 2 місяці тому

      They are legends but the best icedancers?! In their day they were world class but by 1994 the sport had already evolved to a level they could no longer meet. And its been getting more technical and difficult. The best icedancers imho are Virtue and Muir. Or Cizeron and Papàdakis....i can't decide!😂

    • @Historian212
      @Historian212 Місяць тому +1

      @@roddo1955 Torvill and Dean can't be topped because they completely broke the mold. The sport wouldn't be what it is today without their being trailblazers. It's like saying the Beatles will never be matched; not because no one's ever played better or with finer musicianship, but because they influenced everyone who came after them, in their type of music and others, too. Not that they were the first to play rock music, but because they had the biggest influence on those who followed them. The great rock musicians who came after them virtually all credit the Beatles with blazing the trail. Same with Torvill and Dean in ice dancing.

    • @chrisdownie6447

      i agree they wouldn't win amongst the competitors these days

    • @Ozymandi_as
      @Ozymandi_as Місяць тому

      @@roddo1955 you can only beat the field that are available to compete against you. Comparing competitors from one generation to the next is always a somewhat artificial exercise. Standards tend to improve over time, as athletes continually push at the limits of what is thought to be possible, and find incremental improvements to raise the bar higher. Some innovations may be so radical as to amaze the world, but they change the realm of what is possible for the next generation coming up, are eagerly adopted and so become the new normal. This was the kind of impact that Torvill and Dean made on their sport. For the four years leading up to their Olympic victory in Sarajevo, they repeatedly astounded competitors, judges and spectators with their skill, certainly, but more importantly their vision of what ice dance could be, how imaginative and expressive the choreography could be, while remaining within the technical requirements of a competitive sporting event. Ice dance which had previously been seen by many as little more than an opportunity for pairs skaters who weren't Russian to get some attention suddenly became an equally important event with its own distinct character and appeal, at least whenever T&D were on the ice. Bestemianova and Bhukin ran stolid seconds in one completion after another, but really they might as well have been in a different event. But as the old guard retired, and the new stepped up to replace them, it was clear how influential T&D had been. Then the competition leapt forward, as more pairs were imbued with the creativity T&D had brought to their programmes. Those of us who remember the surprise and delight of seeing Mack & Mabel succeeded by PT Barnum, only for that to be bested by Bolero, will always regard those routines with affection, and possibly a moist eye as well, and they were fine pieces of work, that had an huge impact on the sport. And we have great fondness for them as people, the policeman and the office administrator, both quite shy and unassuming people who somehow wrought passion into greatness in their spare time. They were a very British example of talent and success. But we are also biased. I have seen some extraordinary routines in event years from some of the current or recent generation of skaters. I can't say that T&D are better than some of them, but I'm reluctant to regard them as inferior. For all the effort that skaters and their coaches put into developing and performing their routines, that is really an expression of the strength of their relationships, as skate partners, which have to embody so much respect, trust, loyalty and intimacy (however that is manifested) if a pair is to achieve greatness. It's the quality of the relationship that we see, as spectators, more so than technique. Who can compare one great relationship with another. There's no formula, just what works.

    When I have watched their Bolero in Sarajevo, 1984, I am still in love in their dance. Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean forever.
    God bless you for every beautifully and art work which you gave us with your skating dance.

    For me, this is a sad day - My hero's since a child are finally hanging up their skates - As a pro Ice Skater myself, there will never be another couple like Torvill and Dean - And for the nay sayers out there - Why not milk it! They are up there as the most iconic sports due of all time - Let them have their glory. The blood, sweat and tears that go into being great is not to be underestimated . Unless you have experienced such sporting highs and lows, no room to judge.

      I so agree. I cried too - mixed feelings of sadness and joy for them. God bless them both! I'm in and from Oklahoma, US, and know I can't afford to come to their tour (major health issues and retirement). I've been following them ever since I watched their Olympic performances by television back in the 1980s while I was in grad school. I do hope that they will make some sort of arrangement for their international fans to continue to be part of this by DVD and/or video.

    Many ecolades of very fine dance pair skaters who claimed a stop in time for what many people experienced while watching them as a pearl of great price who captured the top mark from ALL the judges. You both have blessed and enhanced the figure skating academy for an amazing four decades. You both earned your retirement; nevertheless the general skating fans will miss you tremendously. You had closer to fifty years of skating together while dear Kurt Browning is now retiring after 10 years from Stars on Ice. Not only will I remember your Bolero but the wonderful skit OF PASSING THE HAT, CHOREOGRAPHED BY Dean when you both interwovenly performed to include the entire cast of Stars on Ice. The whimsical, intricate timing in so many different manouevering interruptions of guessing who has the hat now kept the audience in stitches..
    ❤❤Hats off to you❤❤ Will your final show next year include a visit over the pond (mighty Atlantic Ocean) to Canada..hopefully in the Kitchener-Waterloo arena known as The Aud ? Please say yes😅😊❤

    What;s amazing is that dance skaters today do not try to emulate the grace and skill of Torville and Dean, rather they skate frantically seemingly believing that they have to cram in as many moves as possible to win. The beauty of Torville and Dean's deep edges and unhurried graceful moves are gone forever,
    The judges appear to have fostered today's frantic style of dance skating.

    Well they can't go on forever... so it's not unusual for them to hang up their skates. We love them and very proud of them....

    I so wish I had the opportunity in my younger years to have learnt this sport on ice.
    Now in my older years Im still inclined to at least skate once around the arena. I hope I do master this sport to get that opportunity.
    These two legends have done it for 50 years, wow, what an accomplishment. 🎉

    I live in the States, so I don’t get to watch ITV. Maybe someday ITV will have a station in the States like the BBC (called BBC America). I’ve seen clips of the different shows on your network, and they look pretty good. Especially Dancing on Ice.

    Ich finde, dass sie schon immer wie Mutter und Sohn aussahen, auch als sie noch jung waren. Aber schön und beeindruckend trotzdem.
