  • I wanted to put together a little (and I do mean little!) Z scale Rokuhan Shorty locomotive test track with some odds and ends I had kicking around the house. Some track, clear decal sheets, scale palm trees and a craft store paddle, that'll do!
    Using the mighty tight Rokuhan 45mm curved track, we've got our little test board. Also we did a quick build using the RSLaser Kits Z scale Speeder Shed. A fun little kit to build and as you can see here, a nice addition to any sized layout.
    We'll do a bit more aging and weathering to this board in the future but for now, it's a fun little piece that hangs on the wall when you're not using it!

      Thank you! I really like these tiny, fun pieces. Just nice to have a bit of fun with the trains. I did another video where I dressed this layout up a bit. Even at this small size, there's always something more to do! ua-cam.com/video/EaPkqmR7mBw/v-deo.html

      @@Raildig You're doing great. You're being a bit too hard on yourself. Sure, it is a good thing to not be repetitive but your repetition is far far less and still relevant, unlike too many of the UA-cams I watch who repetitively ramble on irrelevant side notes and/or unrelated opinions.

    Great video. AZL Tropicana reefers would look at home on this layout if they could only negotiate those tight curves!
    I experimented with Z scale at one time, but decided to stick with N and sold off my small Z collection. However, I was thinking of doing a micro Z layout at some point.
    FYI Island Modelworks has Z scale LIRR M7 shells on their Shapeways store. Might want to check it out.

    • @Raildig
      @Raildig  4 роки тому

      Thanks! I think the Tropicana reefers would quickly become a permanent "end of track" feature on these 45mm curves :)
      I do think these little micro boards are great to have kicking around, especially with the price of the Rokuhan Shorty locos at around $16, and you can pop together a little board like this in a few hours. The biggest downside I see to these little chassis is that they are so small and light and they require so little power to run, they can be prone to stalling on less that REALLY ideal track. I'm tempted to go DCC on one of these in the future for reliable crawling speeds on these crazy tight turns.
      I just checked out that M7 over on Shapeways, it looks pretty cool!

    Finally somebody other than myself appreciates the Florida East Coast Railway ! I am Surprised that you did not use an FEC Shorty, or possibly in the FEC blues color ? It would Be really nice if you can get F-7 painted in the champion colors on there ! Still it’s Awesome !!! 🌊🐺

      I think I like the Flagler / FEC era, the early years, as I think Florida had kind of a wild west / exotic feel to it. Probably why I kind of like the west coast of Florida now as you can still find small pockets of that feel over there. Love the champion colors, will probably do a foobie boxcab when I get the time!

      Raildig I agree with you as flagger being one of the best times because he literally started off by borrowing money to invest into standard oil ! Made him and two other guys multi millionaires ! However Flagler‘s wives weren’t doing very well healthwise and he found Florida to be a fountain of youth so with his own money and using track rights he built his railroad starting in New York and finally in 1910 finished in Key West ! There was a hurricane about 1918 but that didn’t slow Flagler down even after three wives ! But shortly after his passing the FEC was passed on to a CEO who decided that the track and bridges from the glades all the way to Key West would be sold to the state of Florida to commence a highway for cars to drive to Key West ! And if you ever want to do some really interesting reading ? Find the book called ; The Railroad that died at Sea ! Main reason I’ve duplicated locomotive number 153 was Because it was the last rescue train that headed down to Key West in 1935 but did not get further than the long key fishing camp ! People talk about the hurricane in Galveston during 1900 And many lives were lost but, they tend to forget about the 1935 hurricane in Florida that Not only killed a lot of people but it destroyed a railroad ! 🌊🐺

      @@jorgel.fernandeziii8278 That's some great background Jorge, thanks! I think the FEC and also a lot of other historic east coast railroads don't get the same kind of attention that lines like UP, SP, etc. get. The history of this Florida line really does get to me, maybe because I spent time down there as a kid and did get to see lots of this historic stuff in person. Funny what leaves an impression on you when you are a kid.

    Have you considered a little spray of Testors DullCote to reduce the presence of the decal film?

    • @Raildig
      @Raildig  3 роки тому +1

      As this was to be a quick test running piece, I was going to let it go as-is. Of course I didn't :)
      I did a follow up video where I added color to the board, redid the decals and finished with the airbrush and thinned clear gloss acrylic over Dullcote for a flat-to-satin finish:

      @@garrettswoodworx1873 As a new folk to Z, I think the biggest thing to do is... and you likely already know this, go crazy slow and try not to get frustrated. Even though Z is only about 25% or so smaller than N scale, it can be challenging. Worth it, 100%, but it'll take a little getting used to. A goof forum resource is the AZL forum here: azlforum.com/.

      I don't have this board anymore, it went over to Ztrack Magazine but here's the basic loop that was used: ztrackcenter.com/rokuhan-shorty/R081, so I'd guess this board was about 5"+ wide and maybe 10"+ long. I think I picked this board up at Michael's Crafts.
