MAJOR DECISION - Qantas To Fly Finnair Aircraft

  • Qantas will fly Finnair Airbus A330s for 6 months to meet the demand they're seeing across their network. However, a decision to wet-lease the aircraft from the Oneworld partner has seen criticism and complaints from pilots' unions within Australia who claim that this is the end of the Spirit of Australia as a recent run of events highlight the company's change in direction and poor management. Additionally, the Australian pilots union claims a decision by Qantas is ultimately shocking and disappointing. Is this a good decision or bad for the company? In today's video, I discuss this subject.

Lufthansa also wet leased Finnair A350 to operate flights between Frankfurt and Orlando.
While airlines around the world are seeing an increase in demand, Finnair has seen a decline due to airspace restrictions around Russia.
This is a great way for Finnair to continue generating revenue from aircraft that would otherwise be parked.

If the airline needs planes quickly, then a deal within the OneWorld alliance makes sense. Qatar helped out BA the other year when there was a fuselage shortage (Dreamliner engine woes, or something?). It's the real world, guys and gals!

@@craigbeatty8565 This is where an airline with too much capacity/crews that need lease it out to another carrier that actually need the capacity on short notice. Not surprising in this case since Fin Air is has issues overflying Russia these days going to Asia which was most of their long haul network.

Then why does Air New Zealand have leased 2 A330s from WAMOS used for services from Auckland to Perth.
Qatar leases Cathay Pacific 777-300ERs for its operations, for the same reason as Qantas - huge growth within all branches of the Qantas Group.
Why does all of a sudden that when Qantas needs to expand its operations to lower air fares that instead of a positive attitude, people are angry, because it seems they are always angry about something, at this point you can have airfares low or keep them high and you would still complain.
Qantas A330 pilots are not fitted for the use case of Finnair A330s because Finnair have crewing schedules from Helsinki to Australia, its better for them to have them crewed for the way down instead of a handover of AUS -> FIN crew at an Asian port - this is especially the case when looking at the aircraft's rotation. For this to happen, it would be a dry lease off to Qantas and Finnair would lose the aircraft and can't have a rotating schedule that meets their demands.
Qantas' A330-300s that were chopped into freighters were due to the fact that Qantas Fleet Management signaled them to go due to them being too old for Qantas Mainline.
Fleet management and expansion are 2 separate groups within the QF group - Qantas is replacing its 737s with A321neos and 717s with A220s, with the A330 replacement order expected in August. And with A35K ULRs expected in the next few years.

I flew on Finnair A330 a few years ago. As I boarded I was shocked at how tightly packed the seating was configured, and immediately dreaded the pending long haul flight.
It turned out to be amazingly comfortable. The seat was the best economy class I can remember, the entertainment system proved very adequate. I was so comfortable I slept most of the flight without any difficulty. It was the easiest long haul flight I’ve ever done!

I feel like Wet Leasing is a lot more common in other places and Australians don't have a lot of experience with seeing their major airline engaging in a wet lease agreement (even though QantasLink literally does this on a large scale with Alliance Airlines). I think it's just a little different for Aussies when it comes to our national airline wet leasing a widebody to operate international routes, but I believe that is just due to a lack of exposure to this type of operation
As you said, I reckon it could be exciting for some Australians who get to try out the Finnair product which we usually don't see in Australia

Every airline is struggling with something. I think Qantas has made some smart decisions with the new fleet coming - their pricing deal for A220, A321 & A350 would have been exceptional emerging from the pandemic. I do think the A330neo fits in well with the QF strategy - lets see what happens at Paris air show! And capacity issues - welcome to every airline in the🎉 world. For Finnair this is a win for their Winter aircraft usage and for Qantas a win for increased capacity during Summer.
