"She puts a lot of emotions into this songs" is understatement of the century, she was already battling melanoma here and died few months after this performance 😪😪

There are great vocalists, and then there's Eva Cassidy. Simply stunning. Brings an old rocker like me to tears every time.

YEP. She's pretty darn legit, so sad. I've got the dvd..... I read somewhere her band's guitarist taught Her to play not that long before this.... fingerpicking a Strat , a Jazz singer.... pure natural talent.

Eva died only 10 months after this video was recorded in January 1996.
She was only discovered in 2001, in England, when this song was played on the BBC radio.
Suddenly she became a superstar, a reference for the new generation of vocalists.
She was so talented and could sing almost anything: ballads, blues, jazz, gospel, rock, …

It's sad that she never received wider recognition while she was with us, but I hope she somehow knows of the massive amount of people who now hold a special place in their hearts for her. May you shine forever, Eva.

Eva, such a beautiful voice, such a great talent taken far too young and too soon. She had a few great songs and that unforgettable gentle voice with such emotion and power when needed. We missed out on so much more of this beautiful young lady.

Gorgeous, just beautiful. I had never heard of her before so thank you for sharing her talent. I read she died of a late diagnosis of melanoma at 33 only months after this recording. Someone else you might like to hear singing this song in similar style, is Billy Thorpe, an Australian who spent the latter part of his life in the US. He also passed away too young. It would be lovely to think that he and Eva were singing duets with the angels.

Her unique phrasing of this classic caught me off guard, her tone was beautiful, by the second verse I was totally absorbed.
It's like this was the way this song was intended to be.

Eva is one of my top two female vocalists. It is sad that she passed just several months after this performance. She did not know here of her fate. But it seems as if she did. The melancholy, her facial expressions, and her gaze all seem to point to the fact that she knew something.
My other female vocalist is Angelina Jordan from Norway originally. She won Norway's Got Talent at the age of only seven! She is 18 now. Virtually all of her performances from childhood to the present are documented in videos online with nearly 300 videos. It is a deep rabbit hole if you want to plunge, and most reactors once they hear what she does, they gladly take the leap. Like Eva, Angelina conveys emotion, even at such a young age. For starters, I would recommend her 9-year-old performance of I put a Spell on You, black and white video. It is in the opinion of many, the finest vocal performance ever by a 9-year-old child. And there is so much more where that came from. Angelina has been signed by Republic Records since she was 14.

Melanoma had a poor prognosis at the time so you might be right that she she had a sense her time was limited

@@pamstuckey8349 Eva was not aware of her diagnosis at the time of that performance.

Eva's band was desperate to get something on record(no record contract), so they scraped together enough of their own money to have a friend with a mobile recording setup do a live two night session at Blues Ally.
The first nights recording was unusable due to technical issues, so everything depended on the second nights results that was turned into the Live at Blues Ally record.
The amateur video of some of that nights performance was unplanned, but resulted in one of the very few examples of Eva preforming her magic.
Eva recorded this song in January 1996 and passed in November of that same year.
Talent alone won't guarantee success and life isn't always fair.
Eva didn't chart until two years after she died, she never knew how many people came to lover her music.

It is not apparent from the video that Eva was suffering from inoperable and terminal cancer as she did this performance and she died soon afterwards, never having achieved the stardom that she justly deserved. The pain that she was enduring likely came through her performance, though would not be obvious to anyone who did not know her back story. Sadly she died young and largely unknown and would only find fame about five years later when a CD she recorded privately made its way to the BBC in London and was broadcast to wide aclaim by listeners across the UK. This video only emerged about two years after that and was broadcast on the BBC. It was thus that the legend of Eva Cassidy was born. She was the brighest star snuffed out long before her time.

Hey there, I really enjoyed your honest review of this beautiful song. Like you, it's not really in the genre of songs that I would listen too normally. But one thing UA-cam has taught me is to savor the different music out there in the world. I'm an Aussie, and if you ever get the time, there are some songs I would really enjoy getting your take on. I appreciate you will have a growing list of requests, so whenever is fine.
Jimmy Barnes and John Farnham - When Something is wrong with my Baby - studio version in b&w (cover) - (bluesy)
Cold Chisel - 2003 live version of Bow River ( bow.... like bow tie) (blues, rock, soul)
There's a thousand others, and I'm sure you'll get asked them all, but that's my two cents worth.
Thanks again for taking the trouble and time to get your channel out there.
And it goes without saying..... thanks for your service.
