Great video. My background is largely in business and I would liken being a solicitor, particularly self employed, to being a consultant. The practice of law is highly regulated but at the end of the day it’s a form of specialist consultancy so a lot of the things that work in other areas of consulting will work in law when it comes to running the business and attracting and retaining clients, and a lot of things that work in other types of business will work also in consulting and, by extension, law.

Agreed 👍 Often, the consultation is more like a counselling session than an assessment of the law

Totally agree. The more things you’ve done, the more you can find common ground with the client and put them at ease, and win the essential trust. I think I’m the only one with experience of building railways, working in London pubs, driving a truck in Germany, playing in bands etc!

And I am the only solicitor in Ireland with a teleporter licence 😅

I’ve driven one, and loading shovels, but I don’t have a cert for it. I presume the agricultural tractor part of the driving license covers it for road traffic act purposes.

    Yeah I would agree 100 %
I run a small business and during the recession we had a considerable time when we had no calls or footfall, the upshot 12 years later you appreciate every customer that puts a bob over the counter now! It’s called life experience !

Q: Why can't lay litigent employ barristers themselves in Ireland?? Why is it only lawyers who can employ barristers???
Please answer if you can? Thank you 😊 🙏

That's absolutely right I'm in final year LLB and the course is very anachronistic. There's no look into the machinations and minutiae of setting up small practices because well I guess it's assumed most students want to go for a graduate programme anyway, which is a problem because there's very few young solicitors starting up in rural areas, I think there's about 2 'young' solicitors practicing in the Monaghan, Cavan region or so I was told.
Just wondering Terry did you teach yourself for the FE1s? because I will say even though I think the point of view is sound, most people would find setting up a small business easier than self teaching for the FE1s but I dunno I could be wrong there.

I did the course in Griffith College in preparation for the FE1s. It was excellent but I worked really hard and sat (and passed) 8 at one sitting. When your back is to the wall..

@@terrygorry I have a cousin that did the LLb and then the Griffith college course before doing her FE1s do you think that's necessary or too much?

Not just solicitors - pretty much any professional - if you've been through the standard direction, then you're totally and utterly unprepared and often incompetent at running the business side - and I wouldn't have any solution to that because there's also alot of people who aren't set up for the hustle work like you either. For all the work that goes into helping new businesses, there's a lot of areas that could be done for people to help them but it's also good to get the wisdom out there.
Funny enough, on a total other aside, becoming a Barrister in England is also an incredibly weird and wonderful route you can take - and that brings some extremely good people into the profession - so we should never knock "other routes" which some people do!

fair play to you …but hustle😂😂 you’re no different than any of the big firms and as you said it’s business ..and the business of business is business..you don’t and won’t represent anyone unless it’s motivated by your own self interest and making profit- so you’re not different at all I’m afraid …pride comes before a fall!!- that’s the biggest problem if you’re an individual and you’re unfortunate enough to require the assistance of the legal profession in Ireland… there’s been a few exceptions maybe Richard Grogan and Damian Tansey but you’re on ‘the hustle’ as you say …unfortunate choice of words
